On tonight BBC1 at 8pm if anybody is interested. Might be worth a watch. Called King Charles will he change the monarchy. I doubt it but will record it anyway to see what they have to say.

I agree that the answer is no.

jeffgoldblum · 24/04/2023 18:36

Thanks @Viviennemary 👍

Calling · 24/04/2023 18:43

Thank you. He is and will be a very good King.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 24/04/2023 18:46

No I don’t think he will do much at all apart from making the coronation more diverse, the so called slimming down of the monarchy isn’t actually going to do the RF any favours in the long run as if there is no one available to cut the ribbon at Stoke on Trents new Library they will become more and more distant from ‘normal’ people, the RF need to be seen to be doing the grunt work that Princess Anne does now, she can’t go on at her rate forever and there is no one to take the reigns from her when she does need to slow down or retire.

Roussette · 24/04/2023 20:11

Very interesting on the wealth. Stunning in fact. I sort of knew it, but to hear it spoken is Shock

Whaeanui · 24/04/2023 20:49

Oh I was thinking of catching this later, is it worth it for that part @Roussette ?

Yes it was.

In that it wasn't just royal sycophants (although there were some) but good old Norman Baker (who wrote the book) was on, and also it was interesting about how difficult it was to establish things like land boundaries of what is owned by the Duchies, and how there are people out there who work really hard uncovering the layers of obscurity. Encouraging.

There was good old Nicholas Soames who is the RFs biggest fan, pushing back at how wonderful the whole thing is!

CathyorClaire · 24/04/2023 21:00

Thank you.

Will watch on catch-up but I think it's already fairly clear the wide gulf between what he thinks we want to hear and what he actually goes on to do will only get wider.

As for the obliquely acquired wealth I'm quite surprised no-one seems exercised over the eye-watering blurring of lines on royal gifts.

Two valuable Edinburgh properties have made an obscured transition from being treated as gifts to the Crown to now featuring in the King's private property portfolio and lining his pockets with a valuable commercial rent.

As opposed of course to the grace and favour/cosy lease deals still enjoyed by so many hangers-on...

Only EIGHT comments and few viewers 😂Oh, dear.

Whaeanui · 25/04/2023 09:29

Only EIGHT comments Yes royal fans are too busy madly writing the same nasty comments about Meghan and Harry instead. Some people are just so obsessed.

KrasiTime · 25/04/2023 09:42

I’ve recorded and will watch it in a few days. If I remember I’ll be back to comment!

Yes. The documentary was quite mind blowing for the BBC to be honest. I'm gobsmacked no one is interested.

Well.... Royalists wouldn't be would they? It's too close to home to talk about the wealth, the subterfuge, the opacity of the Royal family. They don't like it

(Please note... anyone thinking of watching it, it was balanced there were pro RF conversations too)

The part of the FOI and how it affects the Duchies was interesting. And also the reparations being paid by the Trevelyan family to the island of Grenada for their ancestors being slave owners and for receiving compensation back then. This is an interesting article... Laura Trevelyan talking to Clive Lewis MP whose family came from Grenada and that the Trevelyans were probably slave owners connected to his family.

Laura Trevelyan

Laura Trevelyan: My slavery link to MP shows reality of reparations

Ex-BBC journalist Laura Trevelyan says it's possible her family owned Clive Lewis's ancestors.

Yes I briefly saw this, people are talking about it! I intended to read up on it too. Reparations should and can be made.

AskMeMore · 25/04/2023 13:34

I hadn't known they had stolen two properties in Edinburgh. The Royal Family should be in jail.

Novella4 · 25/04/2023 13:38

I watched it and thought it was just ok. Baby steps I suppose

They had a very pro monarchy person ( Soames) and the rest were simply stating facts
That was the difference I think. The BBC ACTUALLY MENTIONED that the 'royals' chose to exclude themselves from
The freedom of Information Act . And continue to do so

That's a fact -yet just to state that fact publicly is seen as anti monarchy .

The propaganda in the UK is subtle but it's there

Off topic but I read William accepted a large payout from one for phone hacking Murdoch forms

Hmm . Not very noble is it ?
Stuff your already full pockets , keep quiet and let others fight the real battle

No wonder he didn't want Harry to fight in court

Novella4 · 25/04/2023 13:40

@Roussette - yes the Trevelyan family are to be applauded . They seemed very genuine
THAT is leadership

Roussette · 25/04/2023 13:40

Course he did! But to be fair to William, I suppose his hands are tied being heir to the throne.

But hats off to Harry for continuing with his court case along with others.

Yes, I read in one of the articles, they said words to the effect.... 'we have opened the door, now it is up to others to go through it'.

I wonder if that prompted Charles study into it, or whatever he is doing...

Novella4 · 25/04/2023 13:42

Why keep it quiet though ?

Announce what you accepted and give it to charity surely ?

Roussette · 25/04/2023 13:43

Embarrassment probably. It's a pay off. And doesn't look particularly good does it....

What is your view of the programme?

Roussette · 25/04/2023 13:59

Novella4 · 25/04/2023 13:48

What is your view of the programme?

Yes, I'd be interested in that too. After all, there was some very pro Royal family people on the programme, so it won't have been too painful for a Royalist to watch.

Whaeanui · 25/04/2023 14:35

The whole FOI exclusion is really bad, that should not be allowed and was something I didn’t know.
I guess William going to trial against Murdoch would be a really really big deal and opening up a whole mess. I can understand it even though I think the right thing would be to use your power and money to expose them.

CathyorClaire · 25/04/2023 16:15

Highlighted in the excellent Guardian series:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/apr/18/king-charles-renting-out-edinburgh-property-given-to-mother-in-role-as-queen

And that's in addition to what's been uncovered about the sale of gifts and rare stamps and jewellery suddenly making their way into the royals' private collection.

All as corrupt as.
