The Press & The Royals: a discussion

Whaeanui · 17/04/2023 12:25

As we were just having a great discussion on this topic I’m going to try again to continue it on a thread of its own. A previous thread highlighted two particularly prolific ‘royal reporters’, but the same is true for all. They often manufacture stories to create divisions between the women in the family, more often than the men. The public seem to feed off this and none of the family get treated very well except the monarch. So do we think it is possible for the royal family to stay relevant and in the publics mind without their unhealthy relationship with the media? Can social media replace this? What do you think they can do to make positive changes that would reflect an understanding of the mental health challenges the media intrusion results in? Also their role in charities that deal with mental health and misogyny, mistreatment of women etc could be impacted by this too. Thoughts?
Please do not derail this thread by discussing your personal dislike of particular members or if they deserve it. I would like a discussion on how the royal family could change the relationship with the press.

Oh this is so futile. We don’t need page after page arguing about William taking this money in secret surely? Yes I know it’s annoying that it’s done to Harry and Meghan endlessly on this board, such anger at how they get money that’s not ours and what they do with it blah blah…

but let’s focus on what can they do to change their relationship with the press. Does William accepting money from them help that improve, or hinder it?

You’re saying ‘taking money from them’ like it was a pay off for William to let them crack on.

It was a settlement for damages. If he really didn’t give a shit about it, he wouldn’t have gone after them in the first place.

William was the victim in this, not the perpetrator.
And as has been pointed out, there were changes as a result of this.

Maybe he’s happy making change in the background, and doesn’t need to publicise everything, or do it for the ‘optics’

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 09:55

@KrasiTime except it involved Harry and now he has chosen to try and go to trial he is entitled to use information that is legally relevant.

And again I’ll point out that Harry has revealed personal information about William and Harry’s supporters are not criticising it.

William was perfectly entitled to settle & not have it revealed by others.

Deals with the press which are kept secret is a very bad lol for an prospective unelected head of state

People have a right to question this and ask for information

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 09:56

@PicturesOfDogs William only just settled with this publication, 2020. What changes did that result in?

It was a court settlement, not a back hander in a back room.

A court settlement that nobody knew about until yesterday

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 09:58

A settlement to prevent things being publicised that was beneficial to both William and the publication. The latter affects us all and our access to information so that’s where this is possibly in the public interest to know they hacked the future King.

@Roussette

Why did you need to know about the money William received for having his privacy violated ?

What business is it of yours ?

I have answered this question about five times on threads. Maybe read back my posts because my last one said... I am not repeating this again.

DuchessOfPort · 26/04/2023 10:04

Roussette wants to know ALL about William’s privacy violation! How dare he not publicise it!

polkadotdalmation · 26/04/2023 10:06

I am currently in litigation. When our settlement is eventually made, it will be completely undisclosed anywhere. Anonymity it guaranteed.

Does that make our settlement dodgy? A backhander? Or a perfectly reasonable decision to preserve our privacy while at the same time receiving justice?

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:06

@DuchessOfPort so? Quite a lot of people do. No need to hone in on one poster that expresses an opinion quite a lot of people share.

polkadotdalmation · 26/04/2023 10:07

Disclosing williams settlement is not in the public interest. He is also a private citizen and the clue is there...private

PicturesOfDogs · 26/04/2023 10:07

There’s more than one way to skin a cat.

People seem to think William/the RF were complicit. They were the victims, and took the paper to task, and the paper subsequently folded. People are acting like they were/are behind it.

I don’t personally think Harrys ‘scorched earth’ tactics are better. Particularly when your case is about privacy, and as part of it you’re violating other peoples.

William has had to deal with this already, had to go up against NOTW, and now his brother is revealing more shit. Revealing private information whilst crusading for privacy isn’t particularly great optics either, imo.

It’s the irony of it!

Sorry? Where did you get that from. I have never said that. Some of you just make up whatever comes into your head, I'm embarrassed for you.

I said I think he should have donated the undisclosed sum to highlight bad practice.

But just make it up as you go along why don't you

tigger2022 · 26/04/2023 10:08

A settlement is a negotiated agreement. The claimant agreeing not to make a statement afterwards is often one of the clauses that is negotiated. It's really not a conspiracy lol.

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:08

@polkadotdalmation as you know, you’ve repeatedly asked I don’t engage with you and I also asked the same of you. It’s quite strange behaviour to repeatedly make the request and then come to my own thread.

OP posts:
Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:09

@DuchessOfPort I asked you, what did Williams settlement in 2020 change? You said it changed things, what?

OP posts:
Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:10

Again, disclosing you were hacked ( after it is already known other publications hacked you ) and donating the money, is not revealing the private information obtained.

OP posts:
DuchessOfPort · 26/04/2023 10:12

No one know what he did with the money! He could have made an anonymous donation. Or he could not.

It’s private!

A private legal settlement, from a firm that breached his privacy, as a private citizen, by hacking his and his wife’s and wider family’s private voicemails. He is entitled to deal with this situation privately. He can’t now, because his brother has also breached his privacy for
his own ends but none of us know, or have the right to demand what he did with the money.

Reall · 26/04/2023 10:12

Is the taxpayer funding in anyway Wills legal team?

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:15

@DuchessOfPort yes, you’ve made that same point several times. Some people are of the opinion it shouldn’t be private because it involves the press and the future king. You don’t. No need to just keep repeating this back and forth page after page.

You said the settlement changed things, what did it change? It occurred in 2020.

OP posts:
Roussette · 26/04/2023 10:16

He can’t now, because his brother has also breached his privacy for
his own ends but none of us know, or have the right to demand what he did with the money.

It is part of Harry's legal case and probably the lawyers' decision.

PicturesOfDogs · 26/04/2023 10:16

Whaeanui · 26/04/2023 10:09

@DuchessOfPort I asked you, what did Williams settlement in 2020 change? You said it changed things, what?

It was me who said that. I wasn’t talking about the settlement in 2020, I was talking about initially taking legal action against the paper, which was earlier than 2020, considering NOTW went bust over it in 2011.

considering there are no ‘tampon-esqe’ calls being released now, you must see there was an effect
