The royal family

Why have Harry and Meghan chosen titles for their DC?

I genuinely don't understand their reasoning behind them decision to make Archie and Lilibet Prince and Princess - they hate the monarchy, it drive Meghan to suicidal thoughts, in their doc they describe the commonwealth as Empire 2.0 etc etc.

Can someone please enlighten me?

I think future proofing income streams.

(Tbh - I cant get over their decision to use the Queen’s nickname for their daughter (Lilibet) when they had probably caused a lot of personal upset in the grandparent/child relationship. Appreciate no one owns a name and all that but it is quite unique.

I can’t understand that decision either because Lilibet sounds like what it is - a nickname and a child’s nickname at that. Archie sounds like a diminutive and (to my ears) doesn’t sound right with Prince.

The names only sound odd because we're used to a rather different set of names used by the royal family, largely those used by Queen Victoria for her extensive brood.

Give it a bit of time and it'll all sound normal. I can remember when Zara was considered a shocking name choice

purpledalmation · 15/04/2023 07:40

Zara has always been a name. Lilibet is a childhood nickname. It sounds ridiculous and embarrassing. It was an attempt to gain the queens favour but like so many of their stunts, backfired. It's cringeworthy as a name. Won't catch on ever apart from maybe super fans?

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 07:57

I named one of my kids after her grandmother, my mum is named after an aunt but goes by her middle name… it’s so much fuss over an affectionate tribute to someone’s grandmother. She’s known as Lili. It’s so weird the way the public take ownership of the Queen and even her nickname. She wasn’t your grandmother. He can do what he wants with his family

Maireas · 15/04/2023 07:58

Zara was never a shocking name choice. I remember when it was announced, it was considered slightly unusual, but certainly not shocking! Lilibet was the pet name of the late Queen, and used by her close friends and relatives. The Sussexes made a clear decision when using that name (rather than Lily or Elizabeth).

Maireas · 15/04/2023 08:03

Morning, @Whaeanui - I do agree with you, and it is a very affectionate and specific tribute. However, I think that the argument would be that the choice of name, being so distinctive, maybe is at odds with the way they have chosen to pursue their future? However, ultimately it's only a name and no-one owns it. Lilibet, though, is very distinctive and very clearly refers to the late Queen.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 08:12

maybe is at odds with the way they have chosen to pursue their future?

Why? He’s never said a bad word about his grandmother. I think it’s a signal he considers his family and the institution differently. Him no longer working for the family firm doesn’t mean he doesn’t love or have good relationships with some of them. I honestly think the reaction to her name is a little overkill and mean. Everyone in my mums family goes by their middle names for some reason, her English father gave them all family names as first names but Maori second which is what they went by. Different strokes and all that. It’s sweet to me, she’ll be called Lili. I mean Harry doesn’t use his official name does he 🤷🏽‍♀️

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 08:13

Oh and morning! Or Ata Marie is what I say ( Maori ) @Maireas beautiful day where I am.

Maireas · 15/04/2023 08:19

At Marie - that's a nice greeting, @Whaeanui ! I think it links the girl very directly to the late Queen in a way that Archie doesn't. When they grow up in California, she won't have much chance of anonymity. That may sound odd. Maybe it's an affectionate tribute to a woman they loved and respected. It's very distinctive, though.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 08:31

She’ll use Lili day to day. Thing is that is her great gran and people will know but they can’t change who they are, can they? I’m sure the kids will be fine, it’s a little more relaxed in California!

Maireas · 15/04/2023 08:36

Oh, I'm certain that in California she won't be the only one with an unusual name. That is true.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 09:23

I watch real housewives shows and the NY one had two women with titles at one stage, a princess and a countess! One never used it and one did. It’s funny 😂

Maireas · 15/04/2023 09:29

Oh, I've never seen those programmes! I've heard conflicting opinions as to the benefits of European titles in the USA.
My optician bought one of those "lord of the manor" things and claimed it opened a lot of doors!

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 09:36

@Maireas when I was ill for a long time I discovered reality tv! One of my kids insisted I watch with her and now I can’t stop 😂 the countess divorced her European Count, but she uses the title still as her stage name for cabaret! Really! Apparently it’s popular. She also wrote a book on etiquette, Class with the Countess!

Maireas · 15/04/2023 09:42

Brilliant! I love a bit of rubbish tv. I hope you're ok now 🤞

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/04/2023 09:45

I do wonder, if in their quieter moments, in their heads, if it was worth it

We may never know, and in any case reflection's often something which follows the endgame (whatever that turns out to be) rather than being used while the noise and fury's still going on

I'm not going to speculate on what may eventually happen, but their own part in this is an issue for the individuals concerned - though whether they're capable of realsing that is anyone's guess

PilshardPillToSwallow · 15/04/2023 09:47

Lillibet is known as lily.

It's not that uncommon, I've got a cousin who is known as Lillibet to close family.
Also as Liz bet. Her actual name is Elizabeth.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 09:58

@Maireas much better now thank you for asking, not 100% but close enough!

PleaseJustText · 15/04/2023 09:58

You've forgotten a little thing she made called the Archetypes podcasts, which were extremely successful and has nothing to do with the Royal family or titles.

That she made? Oh please. Her producer did most of the work. One of the guests publicly stated she was interviewed by Farrah Safari for Archetypes. It seems Meghan sits there and monologues about herself then the producer comes along and inserts snippets from her own guest interviews to make it look like Meghan is interviewing someone.

Whaeanui · 15/04/2023 10:00

Hmmm I don’t think some people realise how podcasts work. Decent ones have producers and people working on interview subjects. It’s not a one woman show! Even YouTubers have teams around them now.

Livinghappy · 15/04/2023 10:08

The one with Serena have M talking about the Royal Tour. I think there had high ratings initially due to novelty factor but then declined significantly.

sashagabadon · 15/04/2023 11:03

I agree it’s future proofing, also to establish them both as Prince and princess in the media etc with one eye on what has happened in the Netherlands ( or maybe Belgium) royal family with the Queen taking away the titles of the second born son and his family.
Charles would clearly never do this but William presumably potentially could when he is King ( or at least ask them not to use the titles)
it is of course completely hypocritical but Meghan does not care and Harry wants official status and recognition for his children
(imo anyway!)

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 13/04/2023 22:42
Yawn.
As the grandchildren of the reigning monarch, they are automatically prince and princess.
But I suspect you already knew that and this is just yet another boring, goady thread to bring all the frothing Meghan haters out.
Jeez...have a day off.”

I personally think both kids will end up in U.K. anyway as adults. You tend to want the opposite of your upbringing and why wouldn’t a young 23 year old want to come and live in london where he/she is a member of an extended royal family there. I know I would in their shoes!

Ooh and I bet they'll get criticised for it, for "wanting to cash in on their royal connections".
