The royal family

Why have Harry and Meghan chosen titles for their DC?

I genuinely don't understand their reasoning behind them decision to make Archie and Lilibet Prince and Princess - they hate the monarchy, it drive Meghan to suicidal thoughts, in their doc they describe the commonwealth as Empire 2.0 etc etc.

Can someone please enlighten me?

A&L automatically became Prince and Princess when their grandfather became King

toomuchlaundry · 14/04/2023 17:09

@GettingThereCharleyBear other Royals who use their titles don't tend to spend most of their time criticising the institution that bestows the titles and say that they have ruined their lives like H& M do

garlicandsapphires · 14/04/2023 17:11

If it is automatic why was it that some of the Queen’s grandchildren didn’t have titles? Was it that they had them but chose not to use them?

toomuchlaundry · 14/04/2023 17:12

@Viviennemary Zara and Mike Tindall have their sporting background to help rake in the millions too, just like other sportspeople do too

But they could've chosen not to accept the titles for their children as did Princess Margaret & Prince Edward (both hardworking, committed and loyal to the crown) accepting these titles highlights how hypocritical they are.

@garlicandsapphires, grandchildren of monarchs who descend from a male line are entitled to titles. So, Andrew's daughters have titles but Anne's do not. Edward's titles were entitled to titles at birth but their parents decided to let them choose at 18. Louise could've chosen to become a Princess last year but I guess she declined it. James, still can chose to become a Prince at 18. Correct me if I'm wrong

googlejourney · 14/04/2023 17:30

I meant Princess Anne of course... and @Nono22972 is incorrect, her children did inherit titles which she turned down for them as she felt they'd lives would be easier without.

michaelmacrae · 14/04/2023 17:33

So everyone's allowed to make decisions about titles on their kids' behalf except Harry and Meghan. Right.

No actually, go look it up. Anne’s children were not entitled to them. They offered their father an earldom and then the children could have titles but he declined.

EdithWeston · 14/04/2023 17:42

AskMeMore · 14/04/2023 15:29

They explained why. They said they wanted the titles as it is up to the children as adults to decide whether they want to reject them. They did not want to take that choice away.

They wouldn't be "taking the choice away" any more than the Edinburghs took it away from their DC. Who still have the option to use them in adulthood (but Lady Louise has so far not chosen that option)

They can decide for themselves once adult. But they do not have to make that choice at 18. They can do so at any point after that.

No she isn't. Anne declined a title for her husband, which his the only way her children could have had a title. Only children of the sons of the queen automatically got titles. Annes children didn't qualify.

Princess Margaret's DC are not entitled to be HRH Prince or Princess, as they are not in the male line.

They do have titles however, her son was Viscount Linley (secondary title of his father, who was ennobled on marriage and is now the second Earl of Snowdon. Her daughter is Lady Sarah.

H&M could have used the "birthright" titles of Earl of Dumbarton (or I guess just Lord Archie, if they really didn't like the sound of that) and Lady Lili, but chose not too. It seems the importance of birthright has changed with the passage of time

Lady Lili Mountbatten-Windsor sounds so much nicer than Princess Lilibet to me.

I can see that Dumbarton may have caused some teasing in the US, but Lord Archie Mountbatten-Windsor would have been fine.

The only people not allowed to make a choice on titles are the children themselves. They have a right to the titles whether they are 9 months 9 years or 90. They could have made a choice at any time. Their parents are making their children part of the royal 'brand'

How are H&M supposed to 'cash in' on their children’s titles anyway?

You can ask the duchess about that - so dar she what's been very successful in the money camp, for now at least

EdithWeston · 14/04/2023 18:41

This

The decision was wholly theirs, and announced by them once they were ready to make it public.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 14/04/2023 18:49

Because the titles aren't theirs to give away, they belong to their children who will be able to make the decisions for themselves when they reach adulthood.

Riapia · 14/04/2023 19:08

It’s obviously so that they will be able to blend in with the rest of the people that they will eventually have to mix with.

And she hasn't needed the children's titles to do that.

custardbear · 14/04/2023 19:26

A journo said the other day on JV they 'now have been asked to call them PL&PA' ... so assuming there's been an address to the journos ... hilarious as they have stepped back that they want to shove their kids forwards in the title/RF game they so want to disgrace

purpledalmation · 14/04/2023 19:58

No Hun. She's just need the royal family to throw lies and accusations at for 2 years or more, knowing they are the proverbial fish in a barrel.

purpledalmation · 14/04/2023 20:00

Sadly the Sussex's have only had one way of making money and that was to sell family secrets to the highest bidder. Throw mud and some is bound to stick. That is literally the only way they've made their dirty millions, and far removed from their feminist, charitable, eco friendly, humanitarian work as they said they would.

Long live Prince Archie of Sussex and Princess Lilibet of Sussex 👑🎉
