I saw that OP

I'm wondering if the protests are being properly covered by MSM ?
I don't bother with BBC news any more but I hope they have given fair coverage

Fair coverage should include Republican voices on magic hat day also .

rattymol · 07/04/2023 13:03

Will they not just arrest any protesters on coronation day?

Didn’t the king visit yesterday though?

Maundy Thursday money is the clue !

We'll much as I'm sure the Mountbatten Windsors would love every protestor to be thrown in the tower , we (still - so far ) have a right to peaceful protest .

I know why you think any nay sayer will be arrested - as that was exactly what happened during mournathon .

Symon hill was an early victim of this ill thought through response to legitimate protest . He was not convicted - I believe he was released without charge .
Here is his story -he simply shouted 'who elected him?' When the Disneyified 'proclamation ' was read in Oxford

www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2023/27-january/features/features/symon-hill-my-arrest-for-querying-the-king

I still have a soft spot for Rory - the very brave young man who shouted in Andrew's face in Edinburgh . Lovely clear diction !

I think the police response was questioned and revised but I don't know for sure.

There will be a Republican protest at the con a nation . It's all arranged in advance .

www.republic.org.uk/coronation_protest

There are quite a few other organisations - labour for a republic is one I've seen on Twitter
I do like the simple internal rhyme of 'down with the crown!'

Roussette · 07/04/2023 14:54

@Novella4 And there's footage of someone being moved along and banned from holding up a blank piece of paper at one of Charles's walk around things.

Same on 9th Feb in Cornwall when W&K were on walkabout

https://netpol.org/2023/02/10/cornish-protester-assaulted-and-threatened-with-arrest-for-blank-piece-of-paper/

LlynTegid · 07/04/2023 14:58

That's not even the number equivalent to the recipients of the Maundy money!

Novella4 · 07/04/2023 15:12

@Roussette
Yes I saw that .

Blanks pieces of paper indeed.
A woman in Edinburgh was questioned for silently holding up a blank piece of paper
And one or two in wales
There was some discussion on Reddit / Twitter that individuals were easier to pick off and bigger groups were more protective
Certainly some organisations contact the police in advance

I strongly object and question why an individual cannot peacefully protest .

How very shaky it's all looking for the Mountbatten Windsors .

They are not the unifying force that they claim to be
Grifters if you ask me

Maundy pence indeed
No I don't care how 'traditional ' it is .
Pay your bloody taxes Charles .

60 protesters? Not very impressive when you see this

No, because we don't live in a police state. If they start throwing missiles then yes, under public order offences.

notanotheroneagain · 07/04/2023 16:33

Reminds of when the police harassed this young man (turned out to be a lawyer) in Westminster and he recorded the whole thing and was on the telly. He was holding a blank card.

The head of Met was asked later if Jeremy Clarkson would be questioned or held to account about his article, considering guys like this are and doors are knocked down if a kid tweets violent things on their computer.

This country is a joke.

BlobLobIaw · 07/04/2023 16:37

Absolutely brilliant. Well done them.

GingerbreadBaking · 07/04/2023 16:40

I may join them if the woke Royal family continue being political, we may as well have elected politicians at this rate. That was the only reason many tolerated a royal family, them being non political.

vera99 · 07/04/2023 19:12

I think at the death of the Queen a lot of people (myself included) out of respect for a hugely admired very old lady thought better of any protest. The coronation is a different kettle of fish though - a huge expense, a bank holiday by diktat and a lot of folk minded making their views heard, peacefully. If the police or misguided angry monarchists want to up the ante on that then it will be they who are disturbing the peace. An enlightened monarch could wish that some sort of protest festival could be held in Hyde Park and even chuck a 100k in the bucket as a sop to those who don't swallow the Royal Kool-Aid so easily.

Just curious, but which of them is political?

FuckeryOmbudsman · 07/04/2023 20:47

Only 60?

Way below the threshold for being reported on (1500 attended the service, several hundred further outside) other than getting passing mention

rattymol · 08/04/2023 09:18

I don't remember seeing sixty protesters when the queen attended the service.

OP posts:
MrsFinkelstein · 08/04/2023 09:27

Meh. I'd expected more frankly, but it seems there isn't as much Republican sentiment in the general public as I'd thought. Those are only slightly higher numbers than protesters with QE2 (& numbers like that are so low that's why they were never reported on).

Even those that are there are only because its a new King. After the Coronation they'll likely trickle back down again.

In comparison - over 100 ridiculous protesters outside both the QEUH & Sandyford in Glasgow last week being annoying tw@ts.

I'd have thought being a Republican was more popular in the UK than being against women's reproductive rights, but apparently not.

rattymol · 08/04/2023 09:18

I don't remember seeing sixty protesters when the queen attended the service.

I imagine that was because in all the years the Queen attended the Maundy Thursday service it was never just a few weeks until her coronation. (There were protests in the lead up to her coronation in 1953 too, you’ll be pleased to know).

rattymol · 08/04/2023 11:35

Except there have been protests ever since Charles became King. I think they will continue building.

Charles was riding on the goodwill of a grieving public during the funeral. He mistook that for his own popularity.

While I recall MHQE being booed in Scotland in recent years, I honestly cannot remember eggs being thrown her way.
Yes, as the public is moving on, we are seeing more and more protests against him.

Serenster · 08/04/2023 11:44

You may not remember it, but Queen Elizabeth definitely had eggs thrown at her. I posted news reports about it on a previous thread.

daisychain01 · 08/04/2023 11:48

60 anti-monarchist protesters

I'm sure the Royal Family aren't in the least bit worried about 60 people. Probably some of which are rent-a-crowd who'll show up for any old protest - one day it's anti-royals, then it's extinction rebellion, then it's anti-hunting. They clearly don't have anything better else to do with their time.

rattymol · 08/04/2023 11:49

Yes in 1986 in New Zealand.
Not three times in less than a year as has happened to Charles.
