George, Charlotte and Louis will be in the Coronation Procession. A shame Archie was not invited to join them.

'BUT there is a different point of view'

Which I have acknowledged many times. Unlike many republicans who treat anyone with a differing viewpoint as somehow lesser.

I wouldn't dare treat you as lesser.

That's not my thing.

Everyone is entitled to a POV

Many didn’t want the olympics sure, but its a sporting event that thousands of people compete in and get value from, sport reaches and enriches far more lives than just one man’s coronation. Not comparable.

Well, considering it cost 80 times what the coronation will cost I'd bloomin' well hope so...... But again, you're assuming no-one gets anything from the coronation except the King, forgetting that many people enjoy the ceremonies, parades, music, the sense of tradition.

Roussette · 24/03/2023 22:35

Interesting!

Well of course they didn’t. There will always be those who feel that a sporting event is a waste of time and money. My point being that you questioned why a coronation that not everyone wants was being equated to the Olympics, implying that by contrast everyone did want the Olympics. Which is not true.

Exactly!

The Olympics inspired those children who are sporty but want to push themselves and think "I could do that, let me try".
Any event that inspires young kids is good. Sport is a force for good, and a way to inspire others whatever your background.

What does a coronation inspire others to do?

Street parties and waving a flag!

Inspiring!

As said in my posts upthread, part of the reason for bidding for the Olympics and spending the £8bn was the sporting legacy supposedly encouraging people, especially children, to take up sport. There were supposed to be thousands of affordable homes on the Olympic site. But, it didn't happen.

‘A massive betrayal’: how London’s Olympic legacy was sold out

The long read: After so many other Olympic sites ended up left to rot, London 2012 was supposed to be different. But who has really benefited from this orgy of development?

I think it’s a lot of money for tradition. People enjoy a lot of things, doesn’t mean it should be something the country had to pay for. With sport it inspires children, people make careers from sport and it’s enjoyed by many people internationally. Far more than the royal family. Nobody can look at Charles and think, one day that’ll be me, except for two very special better than everyone else males, William & George.

This. I am quite looking forward to the Coronation. I enjoy tradition and history. I appreciate the link with the past. I am not intellectually inferior or brainwashed because of this and I resent the implication by some posters (note Rousette, I said “some” before you start jumping up and down 😂) that this is the case. I enjoyed and appreciated the Olympics too for the record.

Coxspurplepippin · 24/03/2023 23:12

'With sport it inspires children, people make careers from sport and it’s enjoyed by many people internationally'

Very few people make careers from sport. The links just posted show it doesn't inspire many compared to the £ spent. Many people enjoy sport, many don't, so pretty much the same as many people enjoy royal occasions, many don't.

And I loved the Olympics. A once in a lifetime event for me, there won't be another one.

I'd love to know how the coronation will inspire the next generation.

It won't

I'm sorry to hear you won't be around for the next Olympics in 2024. How did the London Olympics inspire you? Did you take up long jump? Run a marathon? 100m butterfly? Rhythmic gymnastics?

Or like most of the population, did you enjoy a couple of weeks of sport then go back to slobbing in front of the sofa?

One of the highlights of the 2012 Olympics for me was the James Bond pastiche. Along with Mo Farah winning the 10k. But it didn't inspire me to take up middle distance running.

Why does absolutely everything need to be about “inspiring” children? Why can’t we just enjoy something for its own sake for once. Why can’t people who want to enjoy the spectacle not be allowed just to do
so, without being sneered at? Of course people won’t aspire to be Charles. That’s isn’t the point really.

It’s a bit like Wimbledon fortnight, the local courts are busy when it’s on and then when it’s over……tumbleweed.

Coxspurplepippin · 24/03/2023 23:29

Just realised I was so exhausted by the Olympics I couldn't even summon the energy to sit on the sofa but had to slob around in front of it. Grin

LadyVictoriaSponge · 24/03/2023 23:33

Maybe it will inspire young people to join the armed forces, maybe they will grow up wanting to serve King and Country? The Queen’s funeral procession was incredible, I was in awe at the military processions and I bet I wasn’t alone in that, and to be honest I think our military being an inspiration is far more important than the long jump.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 24/03/2023 23:50

I don't know you might hear a few under 5s saying "One day mummy, I'd like to be The King of England, Wales and Scotland"

LadyVictoriaSponge · 25/03/2023 00:25

Timely to this thread the pallbearers have received the Royal Victorian Order from the King

The youngest hero was Fletcher Cox, then 19, from Jersey, who finished 'top of his class' as a cadet aged just 15 where he was handed the highest accolade any young soldier can achieve on the Channel Islands - the Lieutenant-Governor's medal - and gave a speech where he said his 'sole ambition' was to parade for the Queen

I think we can safely say he was inspired.

Coxspurplepippin · 25/03/2023 00:30

And is inspiring.

Coxspurplepippin · 25/03/2023 00:32

I remember thinking at the time how incredibly proud their families must have been.

LadyVictoriaSponge · 25/03/2023 00:40

Yes absolutely, if they were my sons I would be bursting with pride.

queentim · 25/03/2023 03:44

The obsession with trying to get a glimpse of the Sussex children is disturbing.

Archie will barely be 4 years old. There's no need to drag him to this event. For any reason. Or to keep making thread after thread about it.

And there's no need to worry about Harry or Meghan getting booed. Charles, Camilla, William and Kate get booed loudly enough at each outing all on their own.
