Was there anything Kate didn't excel at?

Having read many articles Kate (pippa & James also) is so accomplished since she was tiny.
She is very sporty.. strong swimmer, excellent skier, hockey player, lacrosse, athletics, netball.. Plays piano very well & also was lead in schools drama production. Excelled at art.
It seems the Middleton's didn't do much in the way of equistrian sports?
Would love my dc to be as accomplished & well rounded. Can't afford Marlborough or any private for that matter!

I think she is perfectly capable at lots of things but not the piano.

That plink plonk on the piano for a Christmas concert was seriously beyond embarrassing. And a bit of an own goal for the RF as there millions of young children who could've made a far better job!

Ionlydrinkondaysendinginy · 15/03/2023 13:37

If you want your dc to become accomplished like this all you have to do is have loads of money and tell people how amazing they are. Their is always plenty of people to climb up your arse when your rich

Pippa went to Edinburgh uni, is this more elite than St Andrews?

Edinburgh number 5 UK ratings

St Andrews number 29 UK ratings.

So I can answer this question a bit - but it’ll come off bitchy - I know people who spent quite a bit of time with her in her early 20s, and the area she struggled with with social skills.

this was notable because most private school kids are quite confident and effort is put into those soft skills at school, but she wasn’t good at small talk with people she didn’t know very well, was unusually shy for that “set”.

I’m sure I read that she swapped schools because of bullying and friendship issues, so it shouldn’t be a surprise. I’m guessing there’s been a lot of effort put into helping her improve since she joined the Royals.

Looks like the hobbies we know of were carefully chosen (swimming, skiing, piano, hockey, lacrosse) all middle class activities..

Swimming and hockey! Confused

She got AAB in her A levels, A in Maths (not easy!) and Art and B in English, so presumably wasn’t one of the absolute top performers academically but no slouch either.

Her sporting success at school is proven - she set various school records in athletics and was captain of hockey team etc. These things haven’t been invented by the royal family. At the same time it’s clear she had lots of opportunities and support in and out of school to get into sport so not surprising she could build on her natural talent.

I would assume when she took her 'A' levels an A was the highest mark achievable although I can't say for sure when A* first appeared in the grading system for 'A' levels.

This actually makes sense.

I can imagine she might be quite self contained which can come across as a socially stand offish or distant person. Maybe hard to get to know. Content with close family relationships.
I don't think it's bitchy I think it's just a personality type.
One which probably works well in her position.

Riapia · 15/03/2023 13:47

Her taste in men?

She is certainly genetically advantaged in her looks, general sporting ability and general intelligence.

Maybe not exceptional in any of them, but the combination of them all together does make her impressive.

And then the circumstantial advantage of being born into an aspirational family with money which provided all the opportunities for her talents to be identified and honed.

She really has had an abundance of advantages. Genetic and circumstances.

Agree with this she definitely won in life’s lottery! and having a stable loving supportive family as well, she is incredibly fortunate.

My impression is that she had a very small circle of friends & her family. I'd imagine her small talk was limited as she didn't want to say the wrong thing & also didn't know who to trust.

I thought St Andrews is seen as a bit of a safe, respectable (and fun) university for people who have been taught well enough to get decent AL results but aren’t actually terribly bright or self motivated enough to cope with a very academic and competitive university.

Absolute rubbish. It's a very well respected university here in Scotland. Third oldest university in the UK after Oxford and Cambridge. Thanks for rubbishing our universities.

Rosula · 15/03/2023 13:51

Throw enough money at someone and they will be "accomplished".

I don't think that's true. No matter how many millions anyone had thrown at me, I would still have been lousy at sport and art and have a terrible singing voice.

Agreed. She had all the attributes plus a rich, aspirational, supportive, loving family

Ah now clever people also go there. Whatever uni she followed William to, would probably have people saying it wasn’t for clever people.

Im not a RF fan but it’s not true to slag off an entire university.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 15/03/2023 13:54

Sorry OP we did both these in our state school primary and secondary. We used to win all our inter school and county matches matches mainly because of one girl who could have gone on to play at national level but her family didn't have the means for her to train outside of schools

I'm not sure if Marlborough is an academic private school or just a private school
But if it is academic then AAB is good but not special because of the intake.

I also thought St Andrew was yes RG but elevated because Prince William went there.

LolaSmiles · 15/03/2023 13:56

Part of being well rounded is shit tons of money for tuition and access to excellent facilities. It’s easy to excel at things when you’ve had those opportunities.
This, it's certainly easier if you've lots of money to put into enrichment.

I used to be a teacher. You get these fairly often! Sporty, all rounders, clever, good looking, nice. It seems unfair but that's life!
And also this.

It's not that unusual at some of the schools I've worked in to have nice, well-rounded students with a range of interests.

Generally they have parents who have a range of interests themselves and the means to offer different opportunities, even if the opportunities themselves aren't as expensive as going skiing and horse riding.

SolarEcrisp · 15/03/2023 13:58

I know people who went to st Andrew’s and they divide into two groups - the clever ones who went to state school, and the thick ones who went to private school. Not saying she’s thick but it’s not necessarily the case that if you went there it’s an automatic marker of high intelligence.

JuliesBicycle · 15/03/2023 13:58

I went to a very rough school and we still had all rounder attractive girls. The sports they played were those they could access with not much money like netball and running.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 15/03/2023 14:01

I have three kids. The eldest two are non high achievers. Their youngest sibling is like Kate is amazing at everything she turns her hand to - drama, academics, socials and sports. She's just born that way. Parenting and schooling is no different.

Helpmethanks · 15/03/2023 14:03

Shes been given the opportunity to try all these things

derxa · 15/03/2023 14:07

I forgot to add tennis to my list. Kate & Pippa also known for being amazing at tennis.

St Andrews is 4th in the university league tables

no one can be really esteemed accomplished who does not greatly surpass what is usually met with. A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages, to deserve the word; and besides all this, she must possess a certain something in her air and manner of walking, the tone of her voice, her address and expressions, or the word will be but half-deserved
