To be shocked at this from mental health charity founder?

Marjorie Wallace who founded mental health charity SANE in 1986, said when asked about Meghan Markle saying she had suicidal thoughts that she doesn’t ‘respect people who take victimhood on as a career’.

This is shocking. Do people hate Meghan so much that all ethics and morality is jettisoned?

I had not realised it was while she was pregnant.

@purpledalmation none of that matters when it comes to mental health. It was probably a situational depression borne of going through a lot of life changes in a very short space of time, feeling she had no real control over her life, press attention, hormones and the issues with her father. She requested an inpatient stay and was afraid to be on her own because her thoughts were so clear on suicide. I'm glad she appears to be much better now but nobody knows what another person might be going through. Your post is extremely nasty.

Ta da - cancel culture before your very eyes.

Extremely naive of you. Meghan Markle feels the need to over dramatise her life. Maybe because she is an actress? What evidence is there she requested an inpatient stay? Apparently she went to HR, which of course (being a helpless young thing, rather than a strong empowered feminist,) is exactly the place you go when you have an obstetrician, midwife and your husbands therapist on speed dial.

We have only her word these things happened, and I'm sorry but she is proven to be a liar to suit her own ends.

I beg to differ. It does matter to people who suffer genuine mental health problems and genuinely struggle to get help. I'm sure MM did have some anxieties around her pregnancy and would have benefited from help. Thats not my point. My point is there was help available (as pointed out in my post). If she chose not to seek that help, then it is a perfectly reasonable to question why not. Also perfectly reasonable to wonder why two wealthy people with healthy children, living in a mansion in one of the richest countries in the world, feel obliged to paint themselves as victims and to bore us silly with 6 hours on their 'victimhood'.

I have been reading about Marjorie Wallace. A summary:

Wikipedia warns you that her entry might have been created or edited in exchange for money

The Telegraph alleges that she was the earl of Snowdon's mistress.

Prince Charles is a patron of SANE. There are other links between the charity and the royal family.

She has a degree in psychology which makes her comments all the more disappointing.

If you have ever been pregnant (recently) it is encumbant on midwifes to enquire of pregnant women how their mental health is. There are specialist ante and post partum midwifery mental health teams set up. If you're saying Meghan was not offered this service then it would not be believable. Every Trust offers this service, so I am sure a top notch private service to her would have done this. It is their duty to ask.

So throw dirt and hope some of it sticks, instead of exercising some actual critical thinking around how truthful MMs statements were?

lollipoprainbow · 23/01/2023 21:23

Shocking thing to say for a mental health campaigner. She should be sacked.

lollipoprainbow · 23/01/2023 21:26

@purpledalmation are you a tabloid journalist ? You sound like one.

Interesting no doubt another friend of Camilla too.

Yes, people do actually hate her that much.

Sadly, they believe there are many others out there who feel exactly the same, so they don't hesitate to make spectacles of themselves, confident that they won't be judged by a large portion of the population.

AuraBora · 23/01/2023 21:31

@AttentionAll Jettisoning all ethics and morality?I'd say Prince Harry is doing a fine job on that front with his seedy, greedy 'memoir'!

AttentionAll · 23/01/2023 21:32

@purpledalmation Sure midwives ask about your mental health. Not all women are honest, it is hard to tell a virtual stranger that you feel suicidal and are frightened you are going to kill yourself.

This. There’s still a lot of stigma attached to mental health issues. This silly woman saying these things will have added to that. A lot of good work undone, I hope she faces a huge backlash for it. These attitudes are harmful to society.

BlackBasket · 23/01/2023 21:55

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you cry wolf.
When you discredit yourself, and lie about little things, people will not believe you about big things.

As a PP said, the night at the theatre where she said she was sobbing to herself. She clearly wasn’t, her makeup was perfect, no puffy eyes etc.

I’m not saying she wasn’t upset, I’m not saying she wasn’t suffering, I’m not saying she hadn’t had suicidal thoughts.

But what I am saying is that she was not sat there sobbing that night. Because we have photos of her.

She does herself a massive disservice, with her exaggerations and embellishments.

Theres a reason kids are taught the story about the boy who cried wolf.
Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.

Having said all that, while I do believe many people will see the point in what this woman in saying, she should not have said this in her position
There are potentially people who won’t seek help because of this kind of sentiment, and I believe it’s unethical for her to say this in the position she’s in. She should know better, and keep her opinions to herself, and keep what comes out of her mouth professional

TrashyPanda · 23/01/2023 23:07

Meghan markle never complained of mental health problems in all her 37 years before she married Harry, and now in America, not a peep about her MH

I never had any mental health problems in over 40 years. Until I did. And then I could recognise how incidents in my past were warning signs.

i don’t hide my depression, but I don’t often speak about it. Close friends and family know, but I rarely talk about it. Because people just don’t understand how someone who seems to have a nice life sometimes wants to throw herself under the wheels of a lorry.

i hope I would always reach out with compassion to anyone who was brave enough to speak about their MH issues - who ever they are

HeddaGarbled · 23/01/2023 23:37

Burn the witch

AttentionAll · 23/01/2023 23:41

You are being ridiculous. She said something publicly that was against the ethos of the charity she founded. Exactly the kind of thing that stops people seeking help for their mental health issues.

But she was happy to tell a nice lady from HR without prompting .... logical that

Do people love Meghan so much they jettison all ethics and believe a proven liar?

ricepuddin · 24/01/2023 01:50

I can understand why she feels that way. I'm not into the Meghan stuff but I've seen actual quotes she's said... In my own life, the sort of person who talks about themselves the way Meghan seems to (S Africans dancing on the streets to welcome her, Ban Ki Moon giving her a standing ovation, and a lot of other weird self-glorifying no normal person would say) also continues to falsely use mental health/suicide for attention.

But I don't think it was smart for a mental health charity founder to publicly say this.

ricepuddin · 24/01/2023 01:52

Sorry I mean to celebrate her. Welcoming would at least make sense. And other insane direct quotes I can't even be bothered to look up.
