Nott Cogg - 'frat house'

The father-of-two wrote: 'I was excited to welcome Meg to my home, but also embarrassed. Nott Cott was no palace. Nott Cott was palace adjacent - that was the best you could say for it.'
As he watched Meghan walk up the garden path to his home, Prince Harry says he was 'relieved' that she 'gave no indication of disillusionment'.
However, that changed when the duchess stepped inside the cottage - where the ceilings are 'dolls' house low'.
He added: 'Then she said something about a frat house.'
Prince Harry says he had never noticed how 'shabby' the furniture in his home was before - with the then Suits actress appearing particularly unimpressed with his beanbag chair which matched his brown sofa.
After Meghan moved in, Prince Harry recalls how the couple purchased some Ikea lights and ordered a second-hand settee from sofa.com, which they'd bought with his future wife's credit card.

Is this petulant and ungrateful spun for a laugh?

Nott COTT, of course!

Well she knew this was just the start of the royal gravy train.

TellMeWhere · 11/01/2023 15:45

I don't understand the bizarre handwringing over ikea furniture. Between the two of them they could've furnished any which way they liked.

I think she probably regrets her decision but is making do and biding her time.

eggandonion · 11/01/2023 15:49

Why did they buy a second hand settee, not a new one from sofa.com?
Good idea to use a credit card, in case of any problems with it.

Papyrus · 11/01/2023 15:55

I don't understand the whinging about Nottingham Cottage, which apparently is 1300 sq foot, hardly tiny.

It was only temporary, no one expected them to live there long term. William and Kate also lived there and it was the first place Prince George lived as a baby. So he can't claim inferior treatment with this one.

HaroldsHorseyLady · 11/01/2023 16:02

From frat house to the Olive Garden mansion, clearly they thought Nott Cottage was so beneath them.

They didn’t sofa.com only sells new sofas.

Legrandetraitor · 11/01/2023 16:15

He’s so fucking ungrateful and whiny

They come across as very gauche and lacking in class to me here.

The 'frat house' was a Christopher Wren designed building with historical significance, on the ground of Kensington Palace, with Kensington Park and one of the most exclusive areas in London on their doorstep. If it were available on the open market, it would be worth millions.

I think their taste tends towards the tacky and nouveau riche. Look at the fug McMansion they live in now. I'd take 'the frat house' any day of the week.

Damnautocorrect · 11/01/2023 16:21

So he’d not bothered furnishing it and making it a home.

hoppityscotch · 11/01/2023 16:22

Ikea is fab. I own lots of IKEA.

watcherintherye · 11/01/2023 16:25

Y’see, it’s stuff like this which makes me wonder if Meghan is just a bit manipulative and controlling. Harry had obviously been perfectly happy and comfortable with his Nott Cott bean bag chair until he viewed it through Meghan’s eyes, whereupon it became shabby and embarrassing. (That’s a red flag, for a start.)

In the meantime Meghan’s eyes had swivelled towards the huge mansion with rolling lawns which was surely Harry’s birthright. I think Meghan thought that she would take him in hand (for his own good) and point out how badly treated and scapegoated he was, and probably always had been, by his own family. (Another red flag.)

I can just hear her saying of Frogmore Cottage “Harry, I just can’t live in this awful hovel a minute longer!” Or maybe I’ve just overdosed on ‘The Windsors’ Grin

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 16:30

The Nott Cott stuff is embarrassing.

eggandonion · 11/01/2023 16:48

It looks like a nice national trust holiday let, I would happily spend a week in it when visiting London. With a new sofa, or even a second hand one.
They seem to like modern places like the one Andrew and Fergie had. I would happily send a week in it too...

Bluekerfuffle · 11/01/2023 16:59

For someone who likes to make out he’s just an average guy and doesn’t like all the pomp and ceremony, why would he be embarrassed? Because he looks down on peasants and their standard accommodation and thought she would too. Doesn’t show either of them in a good light.

DerangedViper · 11/01/2023 17:02

H&M are shorter than W&C, so I doubt the ceilings were low by normal standards - just not palatially high.

And if he had a penchant for gopping furniture, that's his lookout

StatisticallyChallenged · 11/01/2023 17:10

I mean "new girlfriend hates bachelor pad furniture" is hardly unusual, is it?

So why tell the world about it years later?

That was kind of my point.

Exactly. A 1300 sg ft house in Kensington. Literally worth millions. Given to him for his use. Such a hard life.

I can't help but draw the same conclusion.

If he hated it so much before, why did he stay living in it? He has plenty of his own private wealth. He'd inherited plenty from his mother and the QM. Charles bought Highgrove when he was young and made it how he wanted. I'm not saying Harry could have bought something like that but he'd have been able to buy something pretty spectacular by normal standards. Would have probably done him good too.

I'm just getting the impression of him being a complete baby tbh, unable to make his way in the world in any way and not really making much effort either. During the Bradby interview they played the bit where he reads about eating takeaway over the sink and still living with pa. He seemed to want to latch on to W&C continually (contradicting himself on what William is like)- he should have got off his own arse and done something for himself.

Merrymouse · 11/01/2023 17:37

It was decorated by Kelly Hoppen when the Cambridges lived there in 2011.

I can believe that Harry had no interest in his surroundings and that it was a bit Frat House by the time Meghan arrived, but he had lived there for 4 years, so his choice.

Honestly, at 35 I don’t think it was unreasonable for Meghan to want to decorate and have more than a bean bag, but he could have sorted that out.

Maireas · 11/01/2023 17:41

Yes, it also came with security, housekeeping, cleaning and maintenance staff.
The royals are such bastards, eh?

Maireas · 11/01/2023 17:43

Anyway, they didn't live there long. Although Frogmore Cottage was probably a dump as well, poor sods.

ImBlueDab · 11/01/2023 17:44

To me shows a complete lack of awareness. He's moaning about a house, most people would give their right arm to live in, especially in this climate. He really doesn't see how privileged his is
