….as he has worked with vets for 2 decades so sharing this info (killing number) was not boastful and means no shame to discuss it - but his intention was to reduce the number of suicides.

This what he said on The Late Show to counter the recent furores about the Taliban piece. I felt that was an uncomfortable reach for me to believe.

Ex army brat here.

My dad served for 22 years in the army and very, very rarely speaks at length about the things he heard, saw or had to do. When he does the brief glimpses I get into how close he was to danger and how often, well ... I'm not religious but I say thanks to the big guy upstairs. And he was in signals so not immediate cannon fodder.

He was incredibly angry at H disclosing the number. Its like some cliched character in a Rambo-esque movie macabre keeping a 5 bar gate note, what's the value in staying it? As dad said regardless of the goodie/baddie side, all those individuals likely are someone's son, husband or father. They leave people behind who loved them.

Exactly. Very, very similar here. Also, I'm an ex Pads Brat too.

Very well said!

The sad thing about this is that Harry has a great platform to actually be able to do some good for forces veterans.

He could be campaigning to get better mental health support and better practical support for those leaving the forces.

Not only would this be a very positive thing but also, I would imagine, benefit Harry himself to feel that he was actually making a difference. Because of his high profile people might actually listen to him.

I only hope that he has got his whingeing out of his system and can now go on to do some actual good. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen.

Did any of the press reports actually say he was ‘boasting’ about it?

The press were reporting the direct words of Colonel Bob Stewart and others.

Quoting one, possibly two people who might have said Harry was boasting is far away from the press saying that. 🤦‍♂️

I think looking at the actual words would be better in this thread of those quoted in media reports too. Got any?

'I’m not defending him (no skin in the game either way) but can anyone explain why he wasn’t right to publish the number?'

Many, many senior Military staff both current and ex have explained this. Here is one www.forces.net/royals/prince-harry/colonel-tim-collins-prince-harry-has-turned-against-his-other-family-military

It is just crass, stupid and provocative.Yes it may have been mentioned years ago that he'd killed the taliban but not in the context of a poor me book. He talks about chess pieces, it is just absolutely staggering that he thought to include it and is now frantically back peddling and saying it is about suicide prevention when I don't believe he makes any mention of that in the book.

He is a sad, deluded fool.

TizerorFizz · 11/01/2023 18:50

Worse. He’s done it for money. That’s really what it’s about. Our military see him in the USA and essentially doing very little. He didn’t want to stay here. He knew what he would have to give up with military connections/work and preferred the USA and money making. Everyone is rightly fed up with him. He’s frankly, very selfish.

NameChangeGin · 11/01/2023 19:35

Saying he killed 25 Taliban runs the risk of homicide. It doesn't prevent suicide! If he wanted to prevent suicide, he could campaign for regular people to get access to mental health support more quickly. He could campaign for more psychological I put. He could campaign for and support the NHS. He could help with charities that support eh me tal health of veterans. He could support people addicted to substances. He could shadow a mental health crisis team and offer some of the proceeds of his books and TV deals to support those crisis teams. He could listen to families of those bereaved by suicide and offer to help in whatever way he can.

He has had years of therapy and thinks we should all do years of therapy too, as well as yoga and mindfulness! He forgets we'd never get more than about 6 sessions of CBT on the NHS! Not years of therapy! He forgets yoga is down the to-do list when people are struggling to find a home, enough to eat and afford to have eating on and scoop clothes for the kids

Preventing suicide by declaring numbers if people you killed???... oh, gosh well.doje. should we all pay u on the back

ArcaneWireless · 11/01/2023 20:03

Is there no end to his back-pedalling and justifications?

Veteran to veteran? I’d have rather served alongside a face drawn on a balloon than thee.

I agree with this.

There is loads he can do or could have done. It’s needed and would be welcomed.

But he has reached for “suicide” as a retrospective excuse to counter the attacks on his poor judgment in including the number.

It’s a very transparent, self serving lie, made on the hoof which is insensitive and unpalatable to those families living with this pain.
