Inconsistencies in Spare over hearing about Queen Mother's death

Harry writes that he found out about the Queen Mother's passing away (in March 2002):

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died." "

News reports at the time reported he was skiing in Switzerland with Charles and William. The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002. Easter Saturday. He wouldn't have been at school.

Recollections may vary, indeed! I doubt very much Harry would have taken the call if he's been with his father.

Didn't the editors do any fact checking?

This book needs renaming Sieve, as some facts are included, like lumps of spuds when you drain them before your mash it all up.

flapjackfairy · 10/01/2023 16:21

he reminds me a lot of a friends son who has been a big pot smoker. He is a v paranoid person who.sees conspiracy theories everywhere and suffers from some v spectacular flights of fancy.
Is it possible that Harry has caused cognitive damage to his brain due to the years of drug use and heavy drinking ? There is evidence to suggest that using Marijuana at a young age is particularly damaging.
Whatever the reason it is increasingly hard to believe a word he says.Recollections may vary indeed

He could have taken the call on a landline where they were staying, mobile phones weren't as commonly used. His father could have been elsewhere at the time or literally in the bathroom!

Compare and contrast your scenario and Harry's -

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died."

Skiing in Klosters with family, looking out the window at white snow - and cold. Or, Eton (no family around), looking out the window at vivid colours, and warm.

They're about as opposite as you can get.

I'm not sure if this is a serious/tongue-in-cheek comment??!!

It was obviously tongue in cheek.

It was tongue in cheek, yes. Harry mentions 'the press' or 'the British press' so often that I'm beginning to think he's being sponsored to do so.

Look if Harry says he was at school , that is his truth < sarcasm>

But it's Harry, the 21at century's George Washington. He must have been in ski-school, problem solved.

And by public school I mean boarding, such as Eton, Harrow, Rugby etc etc

Eton once famously started their Easter holidays after Easter. But I think it was in the 90s.

Is this straight from the book? There is a missing apostrophe there as well.

At this point I'm pretty sure the only part that can be considered true is his name on the front cover.

The rest seems like pure fiction.

the queen actually tried very hard to find a solution for Margaret to marry Townsend

According to Robert Lacey in 'Majesty' (granted it was written several decades ago so there may be new info) HM was personally very sympathetic but constrained by being Supreme head of the CoE and the church's attitude at the time to the remarriage of divorced people, even the innocent parties.

Harry seems to have no understanding of the fact that his family are just people mostly trying to do their best in often difficult circumstances. He doesn't seem to see 'them' as human. He's so terribly immature and, to use a favourite word on this forum, dysfunctional.

You could put the full stop in that after 'understanding.'

Apparently Meghan ate fajitas during her labour . It’s a long time since I had my DC but I know that my DDs weren’t given food when they were in labour . Is that normal nowadays ?

No one can stop you eating. My midwife snuck me juice and biscuits to rally me for the second stage.

Bollindger · 10/01/2023 16:25

Wow so Harry and William stayed on the slopes, are photographed on the slopes, and it has been recorded that the QUEEN called her son 15mins after her mum died to tell him, where upon he told his sons as soon as they arrived back at the Hotel, again photo proof they all flew home together. but the Spare has made up his own story, with NO PROOF.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 10/01/2023 16:25

Oh sorry, my mistake. Apologies.

I loved his book about Agassi . Hard to believe it’s the same author.

It is almost starting to sound as if he got his WTF moment a few interviews in and has followed the ‘exact letter of the contract’ method of passive resistance. If the contract didn’t say he had to fact check…

Yes they were - by 2002 most of us had phones. I had my first work mobile in 1996 and my own Nokia brick by about 2001. The Royals would most definitely have had phones - the whole "tampongate" scandal was intercepted mobile phone calls and that was about 1993 or 1994.

nettie434 · 10/01/2023 16:28

That's an interesting discovery, Ridemeginger. I know it was ghostwritten so I can easily imagine genuine mistakes could occur. However, all the more reason to check the content before publication. I believe there were also inconsistencies in the Oprah interview.

I don't think the publishers are remotely bothered about factual errors. The just want sales. Future historians are going to be tying themselves in knots trying to establish what really happened.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/01/2023 16:29

OK, let's be charitable here. Assume it's true that poor orphan Harry has been left at Eton to slog away at his books while Papa and Willy are off skiing during the hols. Then the QM dies and a courtier phones to break the news (not papa, obvs, neglectful uncaring parent that he is). Would courtier a) break the news in such a brusque fashion, not even saying, 'I'm sorry, I have very bad news, YRH'? r would he contact the headmaster or the headmaster's wife and tell them so it could be broken to PH gently and he'd have someone with him?

TL;DR. I'm calling bullshit here.

BethJ62 · 10/01/2023 16:29

I think Harry should have borrowed his wife’s fact checker

Harry doesn’t need to produce proof as it’s his truth & that’s what counts.

Re boarding schools most of my family all went to boarding school- (I wasn’t allowed -still smarts) anyway schools close in holidays & also at the time you had as pp says a number of exeats where you have to go home. No parents in U.K. then you go to your guardians.

Encouraged to eat and drink as normal during Labour now. But not usually with an epidural as it increases the chances of needing a c section / anaesthetic. She could have eaten them in early Labour before the epidural though.

She could have been in and out of a birthing pool before she had an epidural?

it’s possible (but unlikely) that she had a ‘walking’ epidural and stayed mobile, then left shortly afterwards? She was probably allowed to do what she liked.

I left three hours after an epidural birth and it was a full epidural, sixteen years ago.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/01/2023 16:31

I'm just waiting for 'those pics of us on the slopes are faked.'

FatGirlSwim · 10/01/2023 16:31

Not arguing for the veracity or otherwise of the facts in the book!

@Beees even that is debatable as his actual name is Henry 😂

OK that's settled it the whole thing is a work of fiction, name included. Grin
