Inconsistencies in Spare over hearing about Queen Mother's death

Harry writes that he found out about the Queen Mother's passing away (in March 2002):

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died." "

News reports at the time reported he was skiing in Switzerland with Charles and William. The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002. Easter Saturday. He wouldn't have been at school.

Recollections may vary, indeed! I doubt very much Harry would have taken the call if he's been with his father.

Didn't the editors do any fact checking?

Fact checking? What facts? There are literally photos of them at Klosters skiing with Charles from that weekend.

Oh fuck no, please don't start the "are there really photographs" argument again😂

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 11/01/2023 22:01

Harry repeatedly says in the book that he's writing it because he wants the historical record to be accurate

PMSL. At this being regarded as either a historical record or accurate. It's about as reliable and accurate as Pravda.

"I want to see photographs of them at Klosters! no, not those photos! the ones I'm prepared to accept as evidence!"

I suspect it is likely to be a recommended text for years to come for any psychology or mental health student/professional

Funny you should say that, I was thinking today that it might not be a historical record but it's def going to be a psychiatric case study when they get to the personality disorders module.

You really thought that courtiers called the Queen "Lizzie" when the microphones weren't on? 😂

I can see that people are having trouble noticing sarcasm.

Why you should use a therapist with recognised qualifications who is part of a professional body.

I know, right!

Mind you, I hope he got round to buying a table, was sad to hear he’d been eating takeaways over the kitchen sink 🤣. Although I misheard and thought he said under the sink - I had a mental image of him slumped on the floor, back against the kitchen unit, shovelling Chinese into his mouth whilst listening to “All By Myself”.

Kreecher style!

CoffeeBoy · 11/01/2023 23:03

In his memoir Spare, Harry wrote that she was “almost a total stranger” to him - adding: “I was conversant with the general contours of her sad life. Great loves thwarted by the Palace. Exuberant streaks of self-destruction splashed across the tabloids. One hasty marriage, which looked doomed at the outset and ended up being even worse than expected.

gosh, he could be talking about himself not Margaret!

You’re not the first to observe that.

Another generation, another alleged cheating Prince of Wales shrouded in affair Rumours, another generation of very thin wives who are muzzled and made to look good in clothes & make 2 dimensional charity speeches for the cameras, another generation of siblings that are unhappy and troubled like those before them & had. To stuff their feelings down.

the royals have learned nothing

Bloody hell. You need to get your team to check your software, you’re clearly malfunctioning.

Ha, I’ve just clocked that it’s THAT poster 🤣.

You lot are bloody patient and polite with your responses. I just tend to be a grumpy and sarcastic arse to certain posting styles.

Beginning of chapter 35:

“Our family was no longer getting larger. There were no new spouses on the horizon, no new babies. My aunts and uncles, Sophie and Edward, Fergie and Andrew, had stopped growing their families. Pa, too, of course. An era of stasis had set in.

But now, in 2002, it dawned on me, dawned on all of us, that the family wasn’t static after all. We were about to get smaller.

Princess Margaret and Gan-Gan were both unwell.”

Loving the concept that it only occurred to anyone in 2002 that a woman with terminal cancer and a 101 year old woman might not live forever. Especially given that they died in February and March, so the realisation must have come to them incredibly late.

hoooops · 12/01/2023 10:43

another generation of very thin wives

Who do you mean? There are three men in the generation above Harry with four wives between them and I wouldn't call Sophie, Fergie, Diana or Camilla "very thin".

This Thread is aggressively pursuing inconsistencies that are inconsequential to the actual point of the book and message

If he wants the book to be accepted as at least broadly true - and he obviously does, otherwise the entire exercise is pointless - then the inconsistencies are far from inconsequential. If the story about how he was told the QM's death is fictional, why should we believe the story of the fight with William, or the one about "I wasn't actually William's best man", or anything else?

ajandjjmum · 12/01/2023 10:55

SirChenjins · 10/01/2023 18:36

I’d love to see a book that corrects all the mistruths and misremembered events - I’d buy that

I thought that earlier!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 12/01/2023 10:59

This Thread is aggressively pursuing inconsistencies that are inconsequential to the actual point of the book and message

But they are consequential because they absolutely undermine the credibility of the book. I don't have a clue what Harry's message is, I assume he's just written it for the $$$$$.

hoooops · 12/01/2023 11:00

If he is remembering another death it could be Princess Margaret who he didn't like or have much to do with. But even that's unlikely as it was February and he talks about the weather being bright and warm.

Of course, even if that did happen, "courtier tells me news that is not distressing" doesn't really suit his victimisation narrative, so it's not surprising he's made up a pack of lies about it being the QM instead.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/01/2023 11:05

MrsPeachBottom · 11/01/2023 17:11

This thread was very aggressive yesterday and anti Harry and Meghan. It was volatile and incessantly digging up inconsistencies.

Why shouldn't inconsistencies be pointed out? Because you don't like that it makes his book fiction? Because it points out his lies easily disproven?

Bollindger · 12/01/2023 11:23

Isn't the whole point that every time H&M reveal anything it gets looked at and the LIES exposed?
H has taken people and companies to COURT over this, yet if they do it we should all just forgive the lies?😇

SirChenjins · 12/01/2023 11:40

When does a memoir become nothing more a work of fiction?

When does a memoir become libel?

If there are any lawyers on here I’d love to know.

goldierocks · 12/01/2023 11:49

Times artical with share token: Prince Harry’s Spare, fact-checked: details the book gets wrong

Just to add, William and Kate lived in Nottingham Cottage as their London residence after they got married for two years between 2011 - 2013, splitting their time between the cottage and their home in Anglesea in Wales. The cottage was redecorated for them by interior designer Kelly Hoppen. William and Katie lived there with Prince George after he was born, before moving to Kensington Palace apartment 1A in October 2013.

SirChenjins · 12/01/2023 11:55

These are only a handful of inaccuracies - ones that the editors or others should have picked up if Harry wasn’t able to.
