Inconsistencies in Spare over hearing about Queen Mother's death

Harry writes that he found out about the Queen Mother's passing away (in March 2002):

"At Eton, while studying, I took the call. I wish I could remember whose voice was on the other end. A courtiers I believe. I recall that is was just before Easter, the weather bright and warm, light slanting through my window, filled with vivid colours. "Your Royal Highness. The Queen Mother has died." "

News reports at the time reported he was skiing in Switzerland with Charles and William. The Queen Mother died on 30 March 2002. Easter Saturday. He wouldn't have been at school.

Recollections may vary, indeed! I doubt very much Harry would have taken the call if he's been with his father.

Didn't the editors do any fact checking?

I love my sofa.com sofa, I’m upset they are being so maligned. It’s the nicest sofa I have ever owned. The way he’s describing it, you would think they had to get the most threadbare offering from a charity shop.

I'm wondering if they have confused "Sofa" with "Sothebys".

Easily done. Especially when your memory is ... patchy.

No regular teenage boy sits there keeping tabs on the birth rates of his wider family.

A teenage boy might not, but looking back as a 30-something writing a book of supposed "historical interest" he could surely work it out? Or look it up

My teen DC have 5 cousins in their 20s and 30s, and 2 closer to their own age. They possibly don't know the exact age (or birth order) of them all but they'd have a rough idea.

4thtimeunlucky · 11/01/2023 11:08

He apparently said he watches and fact checks The Crown. Have they got to 2002 yet?

Not yet, think they’re now around the year before Diana died.

Ridemeginger · 11/01/2023 11:40

The Crown ends in 1997, shortly before Diana dies. The producers said they would not be doing a further series.

I can't believe Harry watches it, but that could account for some of his fantasy recollections.

My guess is left over from the Boer War is a military joke. I wonder how often Harry got sent for tartan paint?

Margaret had poor health in later years whilst teenage Harry was at boarding school, so they probably didn't have much to do with each other. He should study Margaret though. The witty, entertaining spare who chose between marrying her first love and staying in the royal family.

Someone who had enough self-awareness to realise life outside the royal family wasn't for her. Someone who understood that half-in half-out wasn't an option.

Someone who was artistic and could be sparkling and funny but was also an arch bitch.

Someone who's health was badly affected by her lifestyle.

Helooooooooo

They are doing a 6th season, it’s currently being filmed. Am sure I read somewhere that the writer had a rough 20-year rule, ie he wouldn’t go further in the timeline than leaving a 20 year gap.

Most assumptions are that season 6 will finish around the Queen Mother’s death in 2002. Harry said, in last night’s interview, that he sometimes watches and fact checks the Crown. Am sure he’ll be straight onto them to let them know they made a mistake by not showing him all alone at school when he got the news re the QM’s death!

I wonder which setting they'll go for, snow or warm sunny day?

NewspaperTaxis · 11/01/2023 13:31

Only mostly joking when I say - the day Harry got the news of the Queen Mother's death might not be the same day as the official announcement...

But I expect someone else has made that gag already.

I find it interesting that all these threads are suddenly appearing highlighting apparent inconsistencies.

Maybe it’s got something to do with the book being released yesterday and people being able to read it in context. Just a thought.

Why?

Book out yesterday, bit of time to read it.

When else did you expect people to notice them and chat?

LavenderHillMob · 11/01/2023 13:58

A good way to stop people discussing your variance of recollections, would be to fact check them before committing to print.

Equally a good way to stop people thinking someone is a bullying dick is not to write a book using your very best describing words to tell the world about other people's disabilities/medical conditions/physical appearance.

asblindasabat · 10/01/2023 19:27

So what is the general consensus on this? That this puts the rest of his claims in doubt?

I'd have thought it massively affected credibility and how reliable a source he is.

However I've read another thread and a poster was saying it was a historically accurate accurate version of events.

I did at one time think people were being precious about the crown being historically inaccurate and they were clearly story telling and you cut down on people and jazz up events and add in rumours as fact but I've seen posters refer to it as a reliable actual source - so now think they had a point.

I find it interesting that all these threads are suddenly appearing highlighting apparent inconsistencies.

I think it's astounding many easily verifiable facts weren't checked prior to publication because people do notice this kind of thing - more so with internet than ever before.

It used to be odd person who write in or even notice historically inaccurate dresses in period pieces - now there are many you tubers who do content around just that.

bakalava · 11/01/2023 14:06

About half the content is pifflewaffle which did not need to be in there and does nothing for him. Perhaps he wanted to show himself as Harry the Comedian or Relatable Harry (hoping to transfer those skills onto mainstream US TV) but he is even less likely than his wife to crack that market in this way.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 11/01/2023 14:08

Well when would you like people to comment? Three years after the book comes out? Or are you just surprised how quickly MNetters can read?

Ridemeginger · 11/01/2023 14:20

@MeghanAndTheSeals Really, I thought that 5 was the last series. I really didn't think they would go any further as the events around Diana's death are still so raw for the family. Maybe Hazza can get a consultation job on production as his next gig.

Yes, I cannot see him as reliable on anything now.

Whether that's down to false memory or just plain misrepresentation doesn't really matter

Perfectpeace · 11/01/2023 15:58

This book is probably the best thing Harry could have done for the Royal Family. It has shown him to be a liar and has vindicated those people who have long distrusted Megan and her intentions towards him.

He seems to be a deeply troubled and not very intelligent man - a real catch for a gold-digging narcissist. She will leave him soon and use his own words against him.

Blossomtoes · 11/01/2023 16:00

This book is probably the best thing Harry could have done for the Royal Family.

Without doubt. It’s the most successful PR campaign they could have hoped for.

MrsPeachBottom · 11/01/2023 16:06

This is definitely a way of testing it out on the public and working out inconsistencies.

The story about the Eton Ski trip inconsistency was filed immediately after this thread.

the daily fail is trying to claw their way back to relevancy and credibility as Royal reporters.

They did this after the Oprah interview - tried to find any inconsistencies and hammered the narrative of ‘lies lies lies.’

What will you when the second book is out ? Say that Harry is lying about William allegedly (all over foreign media) having an affair ?

The Royal family will survive this but nobody cares about them. Kate and William are a middle aged couple and it will be another 20 years until the next generation, before you get fresh engagement stories/weddings/babies and fashion moments.
