Harry and Megan should lose their royal titles?

BrownJenkins · 07/01/2023 11:54

Many apologies if this has already been done.
I'm just wondering how many people think Harry and Megan should now lose their royal titles?
After excerpts of Harry's new book, I also think that their children should be denied royal titles.

When there's a way that someone in the Royal line of succession is able to remove themselves then sure, there could possibly also be a way - although it would take a lot of work to establish a protocol and ensure that it is fair and unbiased - to remove someone without their consent. That's not the case with the British/UK/Commonwealth line of succession, though.

Dear MNHQ...could we have a "Let's bitch about Harry and Meghan" board so all these types of threads can piss off into there where the rest of us could hide them so our "Active feed" is not spammed by this type of nonsense. Please and thank you.

There's a Royal Family board, it should all be going there.

Don’t agree that they should lose their titles, as it’s not a popularity contest it’s a birthright.

Meghan doesn't have a birthright to any title. Harry could keep Prince but can easily lose Duke

Please god, make these threads stop.

Probably won't stop until they've finished removing our rights to paid holiday, maternity leave or whatever it is they don't want us to notice.

It's a distraction to fill the headlines and push the real news out of sight.

Because it’s a topic of conversation and she’s asking for opinions. Which is what everyone does on this forum, obviously.

OP I like Harry and Meghan and I think they were treated poorly by the firm and by the British media. However, even I have to agree that they need to lose their titles at this stage. They complain about how awful being a royal is, yet they continue to refer to themselves as The Duke and Duchess of Sussex….

Makes no sense 🤷‍♀️

It makes perfect sense. The titles and status are very important to them, otherwise they'd have ditched them. How else can they monetise the connection?

DuchessOfDisco · 07/01/2023 14:06

I don’t care about the titles. They can keep them all they like, but I really do not want the lead up to be a will they/won’t they come media circus. I want them to put out a statement next week declaring that they won’t be coming and let that be the end of it

Maireas · 07/01/2023 14:09

I agree, @DuchessOfDisco . They can keep the titles, they're obviously very important to them.
I think they'll turn up at the coronation because they'll need more material for the next book/series/podcast/interview/etc

SylvanianFrenemies · 07/01/2023 14:10

Perhaps open the discussion with Prince Andrew?

MaryMcCarthy · 07/01/2023 14:35

I don't know what Royal titles they have, or what they mean. I truly don't care.

What difference does it make to any of our lives?

Yes I think they will come as well, I can’t see them wanting to miss it. But I fear they won’t confirm they will be attending which will mean for lead up to it, all the papers will be front page speculating whether they will or not. And it’s not about them, at all, but they will completely overshadow the event.
I would have so much more respect for the man if he would just put out a statement now saying that although he would love to be there for his father, he feels that in the current climate, it is best that he does not attend, but gives his upmost support to the King…. Or something along those lines. Sometimes the most mature thing you can do, is know when to step back and allow others to shine.
i don’t think they will do that though

Why on Earth do you care?

Probably the same reason that you clicked on the thread and then made the effort to comment.

TheMousePipes · 07/01/2023 14:44

Can these threads PLEASE go on the Royal family board?

HeidiMumsnet · 07/01/2023 14:46

Hi everyone. This thread will soon be moved to The Royal Family topic, due to multiple requests for us to do so. Thanks you for understanding. MNHQ

Thedaysthatremain · 07/01/2023 14:47

I hid the royal family topic for a reason

BrownJenkins · 07/01/2023 15:48

I must apologise for posting this originally in AIBU.
All I wanted was a rough idea of how people felt, without having to read countless threads.
Thank-you to all who voted, before it got moved and to those who answered my original question after.

You cared enough to respond.

All the royals should lose their royal titles.

I actually would thank Harry that he opened our eyes. The royal family is nothing special, just a bunch of privileged nincompoops who wouldn't have achieved much if not for the circumstances of their birth. They are as human as the rest of us.

Here is some philosophy, dictatorship has two forms fear and reverence. The route to fear has been closed by all the commisions and mass communication we have these days.

For reverence, mystery is essential. The Internet has taken care of mystery for the most part. The royal family has somehow maintained it by careful orchestration. Harry has blown the lid wide open. Why should we revere them? Just as human as me and you.

StarInTheHeavens · 07/01/2023 19:39

Removing titles would be pointless, he'll still be the man who was born a prince.
