The royal family

Surely this is the death knell for the Royal Family?

Surely its now over for the Royal Family. Any notion that they are in some way special or noble is completely gone now. They have all gravitas of a problem family on Jeremy Kyle. Why would anyone bow to them or look up to them is beyond me. There is no longer anything regal about them!

They've sailed unscathed through an entire soap opera of scandal for decades and escaped with a bound from highly unsavoury sex 'n' cash allegations in the past year.

I'd like to see it but I'm not rating the chances of a frost bitten stallion delivering the fatal blow.

PurpleFlower1983 · 07/01/2023 21:04

They will survive but the Queen was the last of her kind. It’s sad.

Happyvalleyfan · 07/01/2023 21:05

costs £1.30 per person- not including far greater expense of security paid by the police.

But- what about amount could have earned if they paid fair share of all taxes including inheritance tax?

didn’t the Panama papers also show RF had off shore trusts? Only reason I can imagine is to save yet more tax…

how many hospitals/ schools would all that fund?

'Mon now; put it in perspective. Smacked arse (or possibly actually an ass, he did say it was a rural setting) in a field is no worse than Charles wanting to be someone's tampon.

The difference being that Charles' ridiculous comment was made in a private conversation which was eavesdropped on and made public. Many of us have said equally cringy things to the ones we are besotted with.
Harold's putting all this stuff out willingly because....not sure: he thinks it makes him look good in some way???

CathyorClaire · 07/01/2023 21:09

Yes they did.

And also that the late lamented Queen had sunk funds invested into the exploitative Brighthouse.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 07/01/2023 21:21

the tampon comment was cringey enough, but he didn’t actually say he wanted to be one.

When discussing how much they “need” each other, Charles said: “Oh, God. I’ll just live inside your trousers or something. It would be much easier!”

Camilla replied: “What are you going to turn into, a pair of knickers? Oh, you’re going to come back as a pair of knickers.”

Charles then said: “Or, God forbid, a Tampax. Just my luck!”

Truth is we do not know how much they cost - the accounts are not public.

But I bet when all is said and done, it is a hell of a lot more that a pound thirty.

When something sounds too good to be true it usually is.

TheRubyRedshoes · 07/01/2023 21:35

" all she gravitas of a family on Jeremy Kyle" 😂😂.

Indeed or EastEnders.

Mumskisail · 09/01/2023 10:31

This has strengthened my support for the Royal family, all my friends agree. What Harry has put them through and his behaviour now is appalling, it's very understandable how the family has responded.

BellePeppa · 09/01/2023 10:43

HoppingAndHoping · 07/01/2023 20:17

I doubt it.

What I've seen so far actually increased my sympathy for Charles quite a bit.

Seems like he tried, acknowledged mistakes etc and had some lovely habit as a father (like leaving them little notes).

Revealing personal matters like his father's health issues, teddy bear (IMO nothing to be ashamed off but still private), commenting about how he has more hair than his older brother and that said brother lost the resemblance to the woman who was (obviously) the mother of both of them...

revealing these kinds of thing seem like a massive invasion of his father's privacy and it seems really mean-spirited. I can't see a legitimate reason to include his personal thoughts about William loosing his resemblance to their mother for example.

I think your saying ‘mean-spirited’ really sums Harry up. Regardless of all the ‘He said She said He said’ stuff, Harry is a mean-spirited man. I wouldn’t like that in a friend, partner, work colleague or family member and I certainly don’t like it in him. Charles and William may have their faults, don’t we all, but I don’t think mean-spiritedness is one of them.

Oh I'm quite glad to read this, I remember this from when I was quite young and always thought he wanted to be a tampon which always made me feel a bit ill

But we aren’t expected to revere them? We can live our lives and have absolutely nothing to do with them if we so choose. They have no bearing on our lives.

We have them because of our history and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. There are plenty of extremely wealthy people
in our country. They will always be a wealthy family with inherited wealth. There’s no need to be jealous of them. It’s only luck that they were born as they were. It’s not their choice either. Just luck of the draw.

I think very much QE, her father and now KC, and William very much feel duty bound, which I have respect for. I think though you need to only look back as far as her grandfather to know he and those before him were very strategic to hold that privileged place. Look even further back and people did terrible things to be king, queen or part of the court, they fought for that place, it was luck, but it was definitely their choice that they fought for (literally)

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 09/01/2023 12:14

Quite frankly I have a F-Ton more respect for KC after shunning old Paedo pants further and for being silent long enough to give his dipstick son enough time to look positively unhinged!

Madcats · 09/01/2023 12:30

I'm old enough to remember when Prince Edward persuaded his family to do "It's a Knockout"! (It's on Youtube if you haven't suffered enough already).

How many more interviews has Harry left to do?

I feel rather sorry for the Archewell PR team.

BadgerB · 09/01/2023 12:37

The myth that the RF have somehow been ordained by God has truly been shot to pieces. They are like the rest of us but pay less tax.

Has anyone in the 100 years actually believed they are "ordained by God"? That they are "better than us". I don't think so. They are just more interesting (and less expensive) than a President

XanaduKira · 09/01/2023 12:48

I completely agree @BadgerB

ReneBumsWombats · 09/01/2023 12:53

Nobody believes that the Royal Family is ordained by God. That's not one of the reasons why people want to retain it.

I think you’ll find the Duke of Windsor rejected his country. His decision to abdicate was entirely his ow
No it wasn't. He was prepared to stay as a royal Duke if his wife was granted HRH and was curtseyed to. Or if Hitler won the war and needed a puppet King

He abdicated the throne through choice. Being a royal Duke isn’t being king and becoming king again wouldn’t have undone the abdication. He had a straight choice - remain on the throne or fuck off. He chose the latter.

Money should be paid to those countries which suffered slavery sponsored by the RF.

You do know that Britain was one of the first countries to ban the slave trade? I think only Portugal was earlier. The British Navy lost many men and ships while policing the west coast of Africa, intercepting American slave traders.

He had a straight choice, yes. Give up Wallis and keep the throne, or marry her and bugger off. It seems he thought they might be allowed back when the "scandal" had died down.

I'm afraid that's inaccurate

The 'royals' and the government continued to benefit financially from slavery long after they publicly called for abolition
The city of London was built on it
They used proxys like Brazil

Novella4 · 09/01/2023 14:37

'Royals less expensive) than a President'.
Don't be so ridiculous

Sunshinegirl82 · 09/01/2023 14:51

If the RF were abolished (legally, I'm not sure there is even a mechanism currently to achieve that but glossing over that for now..) they would have to be replaced with something else and that begs the question, with what?

The individuals and the property and assets they own wouldn't just vanish in a puff of smoke.

Can you imagine the division caused? Not to mention the time, energy and expense that would be expended finding a way through the end of a constitutional monarchy? It would make Brexit look like a parish council meeting.

That’s been pointed out literally thousands of times - and ignored by anti monarchists just as many. They live in fantasy land.
