The royal family

Do Harry and Meghan realise hardly anyone supports them?

So everywhere there seems to be complete negativity towards the Netflix documentary and the autobiography coming out. They seem to be universally slated as whingers.
so how much do you think this feeds back to them? It must be v easy to live in a bubble with close supporters telling them they are doing a grand job. But how much reality do you think gets through of how badly they are coming across,

But I want the pomp and ceremony. So do many other people. The ceremony of state occasions and set pieces like the Trooping of the Colour is one of the very few things this country does really well.
I'd rather taxpayers money went into reducing child poverty, making sure depressed teenagers can access CAMHS, that vulnerable older members of society can have high quality social care.

We could keep the royal family, but they could self fund themselves with their vast wealth and only be given expenses where required for particular things.

We have huge wealth inequality in our country and a former chancellor ensuring that taxpayer funds to the RF can never decrease IIRC is laughable.

But if you get rid of the RF, you have to replace them with something else. The British monarchy costs £54m per year and that covers maintenance of buildings, state occasions, formal occasions for British and Commonwealth citizens, visits, etc. All those things would stiil take place but with a different leader who I guess would cost millions to elect every four or five years.
The French presidency cost €100m per year.

Roussette · 09/01/2023 07:48

No, it was £102.4M (not £54M) an increase of 17% on the previous year (it does include BP renovations)

If only our rail workers and nurses could get such a pay rise!

The French presidency is an an Executive function presidency i.e. they have power not a head of state role so it bares no comparison to the head of state function of the monarchy.

The sussex‘s were awarded and accepted the ripple of hope award for - ‘standing up to racism in the royal family’ direct quote from Kerry Kennedy. But now Harry is saying the RF is not racist.

how can this be ?

Exactly. Why didn't Bradby push and say well why on earth haven't you put the record straight the last 2 years?!

Honestly it's so cringeworthy. He is such a disloyal, stupid, backstabber.

I hope none of his family 'reach out' until he releases a statement apologising for all the crap she's subjected them to.

I pity him. He'll end ostracised by his US enablers, divorced and alone with no one taking his calls. MaybeThomas Markle and Harold could hook up and have a Netflix special on 'things we wish we'd done differently'. Then go and share a few tinnies together 🙄.

Nice to catch up with everyone but am only skimming as there are so many posts since I was last here.

@Aspiringmatriarch, I have not been on Mumsnet for days, as there was some sort of glitch, and then life happened. Please link me to the thread discussing the book is up ... I have started reading and would love to discuss it with others who are also reading.

@Glindara just to confirm that as I predicted, the book is divided into Parts, each part titled after a line from Invictus, Harry's favourite poem.

Part 1: Out of the Night that Coves me
Part 2: Bloody, but Unbowed
Part 3: Captan of my Soul.

Cleary, a redemption arc is being followed here. I am on Part 1 now, and hope to discuss the book with others reading it too.

@Roussette thanks for defeding lovely, lovely Edinburgh, but given that it produced David Hume, Walter Scott, Adam Smith and the magnificent JK Rowling, and is the only city in the world with a railway station named after a novel, Scott's Waverley, I think it will survive @derxa's withering attacks.

She is right to say it is incredibly cliquey, and that a disproportionate number of kids are privately educated - Scotland has a great tradition of boarding schools, from the King's old school, which he called to Colditz in kilts, all the way to Hogwarts😁

MrsMaxDeWinter · 10/01/2023 19:54

Eish, sorry for all the typos. Am writing without my glasses!

BethJ62 · 10/01/2023 20:01

Minor point @MrsMaxDeWinter but JK Rowling was born and brought up in England attended university in Exeter and only moved to Edinburgh as an adult .

You are right! Sorry to claim her for Edinburgh. I often pass the Elephant House, the cafe where she used to write Harry Potter, and had forgotten she is not a local. Thanks for the correction!

MrsMax 😆'Withering attacks' I'm Scottish and a West Coaster. There is a rivalry between us and East Coasters. I'm certainly aware of Edinburgh's position as the Athens of The North and a home to the Enlightenment.
However I was a student there for 3 years and the contrast to my 3 years in Glasgow was stark.

Is that a quote? I can't find it. It says the award was for their activism around racism, not specifically standing up to racists in the royal family.

I've been outed! Heh heh.

@Aspiringmatriarch I found the thread thanks, so far it's very measured and shows the difference between reading a book and reading headlines about it.
Have a deadline but will join tomorrow.

Pax @derxa pax. I am not a fan of Glasgow. Too "new money" for me! (Flees!)

They have plenty of support. The gutter press don’t want you to think so of course.

I don’t know where. I haven’t heard a good word about them and their MN support has dwindled to single figures.

Really? How?

I've seen more support than ever. Have a look at this thread and tell me their support has dwindled. I would say about 99% sympathy for Harry.

On MN, I cannot cope with the 75 threads, too many to post on. There's only so much time a person has without it affecting life.

HaroldeVwilliam · 10/01/2023 22:10

@DomesticShortHair very true.

I think one reason is because some posters get so vicious...they just close people down etc.

Prince Harry favourability falls to new low in run up to ‘Spare’ launch

yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2023/01/09/prince-harry-favourability-falls-new-low-after-run

Sayitagainmyl · 10/01/2023 23:59

This result is based on a sample of about 1,700 adults in the UK. That’s not large enough to be representative of a national population of over 67 million. Therefore, it’s utterly meaningless. You could survey a different sample of 1,700 and get a completely different result.

Patineur · 11/01/2023 00:07

According to the Mail, he claims he's always known he's there in case William needs a blood donation or a spare kidney or something. Because of course we have no Blood Transfusion Service, and doctors would be happy to break the Hippocratic oath and the law by holding him down and nicking his organs. Is he really dim enough to believe that the "heir and spare" term actually means spare parts?
