The royal family

Do Harry and Meghan realise hardly anyone supports them?

So everywhere there seems to be complete negativity towards the Netflix documentary and the autobiography coming out. They seem to be universally slated as whingers.
so how much do you think this feeds back to them? It must be v easy to live in a bubble with close supporters telling them they are doing a grand job. But how much reality do you think gets through of how badly they are coming across,

Thanks, no worries - I thought you could see which threads had been started when, but it looks like the threads just keep getting bumped up by the most recent post.

Yes, sorry, it is just last post. It doesn't show when the thread was started but the title of a lot of them show them as being it was since the book excerpts came out.

Rhondaa · 07/01/2023 13:01

'I will flip this question right back and ask those people who demanded silence from TM can’t keep to the same standard?'

You'll just get tumbleweed or derailment about poems and 'literary style'.

I'll answer for them. Yeah but no but. Grin

TiddyTidTwo · 07/01/2023 13:03

"It's like saying the Taliban agree with me, he needs a Doctor"
@Roussette

Or, Harry is so far gone even some of the worst people on earth thinks he needs help.

Rhondaa · 07/01/2023 13:03

'Totally agree. And how many threads have there been on here about having to cope with a 'golden child' in the family.'

There is a cost of living crisis and he's crying about a smaller bedroom in a massive castle. We know he's tone deaf, we know he isn't very self aware but he doesn't need to keep reminding us.

Agree . Can you imagine the outrage if William told the world about Harry’s circumcision ?? MN would implode .

Presumably you have never read the novels of Jilly Cooper or any other books about British upper class life as written by those close enough to observe, if not actually inside?

The practice of circumcision being common amongst the royals and the upper classes is hardly news.

Rhondaa · 07/01/2023 13:07

'The practice of circumcision being common amongst the royals and the upper classes is hardly news.'

Confused

It isn't Harold's news to share. Ya know, bit like when Thomas shouldn't have been blabbing to the media and oversharing. Did you approve of that?

Inastatus · 07/01/2023 13:10

Most of my friends are v negative towards Meghan and I didn't really get it. I watched the Netflix documentary and felt a good deal of sympathy towards them however from what is being leaked about ‘Spare’ I think H has lost the plot.

Memoir, a definition: A memoir is a genre of non-fiction in which the author recounts specific events in the past that they witnessed or participated in.

I am sure that if Harry had known that there would be a cost of living crisis in 2023 when he was seething about his bedroom as a child in Balmoral in the 1990s, he would have modulated his resentment in a way that made it acceptable to write about it many years later.

I am well aware of that however it most certainly wasn’t Harry’s news to share ! I am sure certain posters would be apoplectic if William said that about Harry !

He knew when he provided the material for the book. Or he would have done if he didn’t live in an ivory tower.

Boo hoo'ing over the size of his bedroom is just cringeworthy. It isn't obviously just the cost of living crisis, people struggle with lots of things money, illness, disability, abuse. Harold should really have known to comment on this utter non event just confirms what a shallow, hapless person he is.

That doesn't deal with the fact he should have known when writing this book. And it says not much good about him if he's still holding onto that one from a long time ago....he's nearly 40! 🤦‍♂️

What a ridiculous complaint when most people have a smaller room than he had....talk about tone deaf.

When even the Taliban suggests Harry needs to see a doctor......

I really liked H&M but the scales definitely dropped from my eyes some time ago

The interesting thing about the Taliban quite is how well they've read the room.

They've actually put a lot of thought into their game plan of reclaiming power and included favourable treatment of some journalists etc to gloss things over. They've responded to this story in a way that is entirely in line with the mainstream media mood.

Because it benefits them to do so. Because they have a plan where reacting like this serves a purpose.

The fact that Harry does not seem to have a plan or purpose is disturbing. If he had a plan to bring down the monarchy, fine, he's allowed to do that. If he had a plan to build his own reputation for his future benefit, all good, you do you.

But he's doing personal damage as well as public damage. To Britain's international reputation post Brexit. To our head of state's reputation at a time of significant foreign interference in our electoral process. To himself and his family's security most of all.

I'm actually quite glad he's made a tit of himself, because I don't think those first two matters are insignificant at all. It all ties in to the cost of living crisis many are suffering from now. And if people think he's an idiot, the less damage he can do.

(In case it needs saying, they're abhorrent shits, but that's not the same as being tactically stupid)

MrsMaxDeWinter · 07/01/2023 19:37

Oh honey, you all did the damage to Britain's international reputation all by your own sweet selves with Brexit. In a bi-polar world tilted on the US-China axis, it was absolute madness to detach from the one power that gave Britain economic and political advantage. Here's a great read from Chatham House, the international relations think tank. Harry is the least of your problems.

You may not know this, but since 2017, for the first time in 70 or so years, Britain does not have a seat on the international Court of Justice because your judge, Chris Greenwood failed to get a second term and was replaced by an Indian judge after the EU failed to back him. It was reported at the time as a huge fall from grace for Britain. More here:

Nothing to do with Harry.

Also causing huge resentment at the UN and beyond is the UK's refusal to obey international law over the Chagos islands dispute, which the UK is refusing to return to Mauritius.

theconversation.com/chagos-islands-mauritiuss-latest-challenge-to-uk-shows-row-over-sovereignty-will-not-go-away-177381

Nothing to do with Harry.

Also, some in Africa are gunning for your permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Yeah baby. The UK is desperate to cling to the Commonwealth as part of its soft power, but stuff is unravelling there too, over Britain's refusal to confront its past of slavery and colonialism.

Harry is very far from being the reason Britain has lost its shine. Dig deeper. You may strike treasure.

I won't address you as disrespectfully as you addressed me, but I will point out that I didn't vote for Brexit, and I wholeheartedly think that Britain needs to re-evaluate its role in geopolitics.

And I don't think that scattergun attacks from establishment figures is the way about it. I think it makes a bad situation worse, and stirs the pot of culture wars, which, you guessed it, also makes things worse.

You seem to have a mahoosive chip on your shoulder regarding Britain, what happened?? there must be a back story here Grin. Anyway I'd rather live here with all our faults than say the US with all their rampant racism and rampant gun crime any day thanks.

@MrsMaxDeWinter I think you mentioned a thread for people reading the book - there is one on here somewhere in amongst all the frothing and memes. Maybe see you there in a few days!

MrsMaxDeWinter · 07/01/2023 22:44

Would you mind very much if I ask where you’re from @MrsMaxDeWinter? Please don’t say if you’d rather not 😊

Very kind of you to ask @BethDuttonsTwin I am currently in one of my favourite places in the world, Edinburgh, where I spend about half the year.

But to quote Lady Susan Hussey, heh, where I am REALLY from is an African Commonwealth country with a long history of British conquest and race based segregation. I am old enough to have been one of a handful of black children to desegregate a formerly all white school, a traumatic and dislocating experience that left deep scars. So what many here consider the British past, colonialism etc, is very much my African present.

I work in publishing, including as a translator working in three languages. I am an Anglophile with tremendous admiration for Britain's many contributions to parliamentary democracy, the rule of law, the industrial revolution, the arts, literature and culture, and this glorious language that I speak, the most flexible in the world, that was imposed on me, but which I claim was my own.

I also I love British history, am obsessed with the Tudors, especially the foreign policy of Henry VII and Henry VIII.

I am, however, not a big fan of the Windsors.

But I have deep sympathy for Diana, have always loved Harry and I will always defend Meghan against the tidal wave of hate engulfing her. I have said elsewhere that I have twin cousins called Charles and Diana. Not even kidding. I am from a family of fervent African Royalists. My mom frets over Meghan like her child.

Tell me, how is Meghan these days, she always asks, like I would know.😁

PreparationPreparationPrep · 08/01/2023 00:16

But it makes me happy because I want to do a thread on Tuesday for those actually reading the book, discussing the contents, the literary style, etc, all in real time.

Yes I will be back for this - but do you think we will get any peace?

Sort of like a Live Mumsnet Book club. It could even be the start of a real Mumsnet Book Club that we do every month. My favourite royal Thread of all time is the one discussing Ma'am Darling as more and more people read it.

I am glad you suggested this @MrsMaxDeWinter Last week I was actually thinking you would be good at this.

Roussette · 08/01/2023 08:06

@MrsMaxDeWinter

You are very good being so open about your background, it's fascinating.

Given your interest in Royal houses, I wonder if you have watched 'Marie Antionette' ?

It's a new BBC2 serial, but all episodes are streaming on iPlayer. It is absolutely gobsmacking and beautifully done. I have totally revised my thoughts on the doomed Queen of France. She, too, was a 'married in', she was despised and vilified by the public until she won them over (Marie was only 15 when she was married off to Louis against her will... there are shades of Diana here with the age and naivety) and then she lost them again (the public) and the rest is history. (By the way... she never said 'let them eat cake', that's a myth)

There is a lot of curtseying, back biting between factions in the Royal House, gossip within and if any of our European royal Houses (or our House of Windsor) is even remotely like any of it, it's not a surprise we are where we are! To see the opulence of Versailles (I've also seen it in real life) and the general extravagence and deference to these Royal people, made me think there must be elements of this that still carries on in other Royal houses even now... including ours.
The cinematography is mesmerising and it's well worth a watch. (I binge watched and actually would like to watch it all again!)

@PreparationPreparationPrep I think it will be okay in part because there are so many threads where people can vent their spleen. I hop that those who spent 4 threads each discussing Revenge and Courtiers have the courtesy to allow a discussion of this book too. And if we ignore the derailing, it will be okay.

@Roussette Oh I love that era of French history, from the Sun King to the Revolution. Talk about an age of opulence. I do targeted reading every year to dig deeper into my interests, and funnily enough this year I am going deep into the French revolution. Last year, I got high on the Russian revolution and the poor doomed Romanoffs. Thanks for that tip, will start watching next weekend.
