It's shocking how much harder the older Royals are working

The Princess of Wales barely outworked Queen Elizabeth who died in early September after cancelling a series of engagements.

Charles and Anne look to be carrying the monarchy at present. The Earl and Countess of Wessex are grafting hard as well.

What do William and Kate spend their days doing? Surely as young energetic members of the RF, they should be pulling their weight.

@MintyFreshOne I think they're pretty brainwashed with this whole idea of 'duty' and not wanting to be the one credited with the end of the whole institution. Some might love the fame and attention, but I wouldn't swap places with them.

Sorry if I’ve missed it, but does anyone know how much the Royals actually work? I see the number of engagements, but it’s hard to quantify that into days and hours. There must be preparation time, reading documents, etc. There must be work that isn’t explicitly an engagement. Can any of this be translated into days and hours per week?

There’s no real way I know of of seeing hours, but one of the sites that does the calculations does days as well as engagements.

Charles did the most engagements, but Anne worked the most days was the common theme

KnittedCardi · 31/12/2022 14:05

didn't Kate once ask a museum curator if Faberge eggs were still being made? How dim can you get?

Ummmm, except they are!

verystablegenius · 31/12/2022 14:06

Fair enough. I have the impression that William and Kate in particular don’t work that hard, but with these figures it is very difficult to gauge and feel many of us are guessing

BradfordGirl · 31/12/2022 14:07

Look at the Court Circular. They do not need much preparation of any for most of what they are doing.
Kate attends regular Early Years meetings. There are no minutes available. But she knows what happened at the last meeting. It has a regular group of attenders providing services who will be talking about the issues, and Jate supposedly spent a few years learning all about early years issues so should not need briefing on those.

They also go to premieres and sports events - do they get briefings of - This is the Wimbledon Final. This is a very important game of tennis. These are the tennis players who will be playing.

They also receive various people. These are 10 minute meet and greets maximum and don't even involve sitting down and having a cup of tea. They will be briefed on the VIP they are meeting, but it will be a broad brush brief for what is a very brief meet.

They do sometimes go to charities as well, you will know about it as it is always in the news. But again how much briefing do they need? This is a foodbank where poor people go. You will meet x who is the Chair and y who us the CEO. Questions you might want to ask include - what item do you most get donated, what circumstances bring people to the foodbank, and are people donating less with the cost of living crisis?
I mean how much briefing do you think they need!!

Even the Earthshot William does not choose winners or mentor them. He does not even plan the ceremony according to all those who defended him against criticism of the ceremony. He turns up and makes a speech.

I'm afraid I assume not much, unless proven otherwise. Why would the CC look so sparse and fluffed up if not.

The House of Faberge has continued to make eggs. What gets called Faberge eggs are no longer made.

I agree. Why would you include a phone call as an engagement if they were really busy.

I don’t know - how dim are you not to know that there is still a Faberge jewellery company linked to the original family and that it still makes eggs?

After being nationalised by the Bolsheviks in 1918 the Faberge family fled Russia and spent several decades re-acquiring the rights to use the Faberge name (Unilever was using it on cleaning products in the US, for example) so they could relaunch a jewellery firm, which still trades today. Here’s a link to their webpage showing one of their new creations:

Of course William and Kate aren't 'busy with their young children'!
What do you think that means?
They're all at school full time and have nannies. When they were babies they had 24/7 maternity nurses and night nannies?
Are they busy cooking for them? No, cook does that.
Busy cleaning up and washing and ironing? No, housekeeper does that.
Supervising homework? Oh wait, nanny and tutor manages that.

They probably play with the kids a bit every day, maybe they do some bedtime stories and parent's evenings, but if someone else is cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry, sorting uniforms, school runs, taking them to extracurriculars, tidying up after them, arranging playdates with other nannies - literally just 'being' a parent isn't a job.

This. I doubt that Kate has even had to run a bath for the children.

CriticalAlert · 31/12/2022 14:17

None of them have done a day's work ever. I don't understand this view of the RF being hardworking. Getting up at 6an every morning and working 50 hours a week is hardworking.

BradfordGirl · 31/12/2022 14:17

Kate will be busy in the gym, with beauty treatments and getting her hair done. No idea what William does.

LadyKenya · 31/12/2022 14:18

Calling them hardworking is an affront to people who really do work hard, imo.

Fizzadora · 31/12/2022 14:21

Well how do you define work?

I spent my whole career working for a very old fashioned dept of a major financial institution which I fell into purely by chance with no professional qualifications and the emphasis was on customer care, so I would spend my day basically chatting to clients and other professionals and filling a few forms in. I was paid well, got a massive non contributory pension and only worked part time after DC. I have now taken early retirement and the hardest thing I do is the 2 days a week I look after my grandchild.

My younger sister meanwhile was a care assistant in a nursing home. Working full time in a hard physical job for less than half of what I was getting part time.

One of my cousin's has never worked and has spent her whole life on benefits. ( She is unfortunately one of the few who have successfully managed to screw the system. Her 'pay' as she calls it is more than my sister earns.

You can't make comparisons based on the information on that chart and despite all the know it alls on here none of you know from that what is actually involved for each engagement and how much background work is actually involved, if any.

I don't envy Kate like many commenting here do because my working life has, thankfully been easy but I bet if you asked my sister, she wouldn't feel the same.

I agree Kate won't pick up toys off the floor and tidy away.

However they now don't have any live in staff and just the one nanny, Maria Borrallo who is live out now they live in Windsor. as Adelaide House is only 4 bedroom, so no room for her. So when the nanny is not there I'm quite sure Kate will ask the kids to pick up and tidy away their toys, just as we do. And no doubt wash up when she's cooked, fling the hoover round and tidy up much the same as we do.

My friend married into high aristocracy and I am lucky enough to participate in her life.

She will say (wide eyed) that she no longer has live in staff either BUT they live on the estate. They show up for work at 6am.

They clean, cook, laundry etc. Extras come in for events like dinner parties or shooting weekends. Friend has a chat with cook - who presents various ideas for the menus (ie the THINKING is already done). The manager (housekeeper) ditto.

Result is she has time for long walks evey day, works out, reads, has quality time with her husband and her children. All drudgery of daily life is removed and having people around whose sole purpose is to make your ife really enjoyable is AMAZING.

We are mugs if we believe that this a burden for them.

If it were a burden more of them would walk away.

They hang on because it is AN AMAZING LIFE!./😂

formulatingAresponse · 31/12/2022 14:50

It doesn't state the length of time for each engagement or how far they need to travel etc

tatalan · 31/12/2022 14:54

With all the excuses I'm seeing on here, I firmly believe Kate should half her engagements and double her clothing budget in 2023.

The serfs will love her more.

@AnnunciataZ
One year I opened the envelope to see that my tickets were for finals day! I was beside myself thinking it was tricky timing as we were going in hol the day after and being excited and wondering if I should sell them instead, calculating how much they might be worth. Then I looked a bit more closely and it was for court No 1, I think it was for veterans final or something. Imagine sitting in court No 1 listening to the roars and applause from the court next door.
Needless to say I didn't go ahead with them.

Your friend doesn’t need to attend public events where everything she does and says is scrutinised though. What she wears, etc. Or have her children on public display. That’s not worth any amount of money really. They also can’t go out and shop or go to the pub or go on a normal holiday. They are in a zoo. It has guided bars, but it’s a zoo all the same.

Walnutwhipsarenothesame · 31/12/2022 14:59

Also they can’t just walk away. If William abdicated it would have massive repercussions, and mean his son would be king at a very young age. If George abdicated what would be the result? Chaos.

Kate has three primary school age children. I think it’s completely reasonable for her to work part time.

Quite. In all fairness l wouldn’t work full time, if l had 3 primary school age children

BradfordGirl · 31/12/2022 15:01

Kate could divorce if she wanted to. There have been plenty of divorces and of the next heir (Charles). Kate stays married into the Royal Family because she wants to.

Honkeydonkey · 31/12/2022 15:03

None of them 'work', be real.

Like any of you actually know what they are and aren't doing
You only see public engagements which as a new king charles will do more
No one has any idea what is going on behind closed doors
