this is really puzzling me. Much seems to be made about H&M livcing in NC and how small it was - Oprah was shocked etc etc. but W&K lived there when they first got together and even after George was born so it’s not like H&M are being singled out / treated badly or anything?! It just seems to be a cute little starter home (well starter in royal terms anyway) and a nice thing.

Am I missing something as to why it keeps being mentioned in a negative fashion?

@KittyMcKitty Thanks, I did not know all of that. It says they were at Frogmore and moved into Nottingham Cottage because of drama with the Cambridges and now have moved to a property in Portugal. It sounds like they were not at Nottingham Cottage for long.

Where have you seen that Eurgenie and Jack moved to Nott Cott because of drama with the Cambridges? I didn't know that.

allthecrooksandnannies · 16/12/2022 14:43

I didn’t take away form the documentary that they were criticising the cottage at all?

With regards to the ceiling heights I think Harry just meant ‘back in the day when this was built people were shorter’ which is true, no?

Genuinely saw the chat about NC as fond reminiscence!

It was imagined in one of the headlines because the Cambridges moved into Adelaide Cottage (another cottage 😉) which Eugenie apparently had her eye on.

derxa · 16/12/2022 18:20

Totally classless and ignorant.

ajandjjmum · 16/12/2022 18:51

Thanks @LittleBearPad . I did know that W & K had potentially trodden on Eugenie's toes by moving into Adelaide Cottage. If the press is to be believed!!!! But I thought that Eugenie and Jack were living in Portugal now, so didn't think it would be an ongoing issue. What do I know!!!!

Incidentally, is Eugenie pregnant again? Lovely, if so.

Try looking for the good in people occasionally.

I do try in this case but M&H's lack of gratitude for their life's blessings make it impossible. Do they ever watch the news and see how people are struggling at the moment?

I thought so too. She probably hasn’t announced it yet as not to
clash with Royal Christmas events in the news.

Ah, the old rich people can never have any problems.

My ILs gave us our first house. We moved for dh’s work but have held onto the house to use when we visit in the summer. I have never told this to anyone in real life as I am aware of how privileged and lucky we are, never mind complain about it.

Yes they do have problems but they have a lot to be grateful for. They never seem to acknowledge that they have been the architects of some of these problems. The narrative that they had to be whisked from Canadafrom one mansion to another before the borders closed due to CV made me wince. People were confined to tiny homes with no gardens during the pandemic. Don't you remember?

Isn't it all relative?

Celebs were travelling all over the world whilst we were stuck at home. Our home isn't that bad (we could walk out into countryside) but there were those stuck in high rise apartments with no outside life. Hosw horrendous for them. But no fault of those who could afford to do otherwise.

Whilst lockdown was on, a very famous female singer moved into a house/estate near us for the whole of the most fiercest lockdown (first one probably). It has a right of walking way through it, and I walked and was apprehended by her security guys and told to sod off. Nope. It's a right of way, I've lived here forever and I'll walk here thank you!

It's all relative. I don't blame her for living in this massive place during lockdown whilst there are those struggling.

Roussette · 16/12/2022 20:08

p.s. she broke lockdown with a party and made the local papers!

But @Roussette if H&M had moved into the house that singer moved into then their people would have been shouting 'Get orf my land'.

They were complaining about the size of a 'cottage' on the royal estate. Bloody ludicrous

Roussette · 16/12/2022 20:35

They weren't complaining. They were commenting on it. We'll agree to differ like we always do.
Who knows whether they would be saying 'get orf my land'. Maybe they'd have asked me in for a cuppa. Grin (The star/singer is a complete diva so it was an interesting encounter when a right of way has been established for a century!)

Go on Roussette, who was it?

The only part about that which made me wince was the fact that Harry's own family didn't make sure he was protected, that Meghan was in a position where she was sobbing down the phone to someone she hadn't met because she was so frightened about being left as sitting ducks (her infant son included) while knowing that there were people who quite literally wanted her dead.

I can't work out if you're jealous of their wealth or contemptuous of it, but the size of their house is beside the point if they were unsafe there.

Roussette · 16/12/2022 20:43

derxa · 16/12/2022 20:37

Can't say. If you were to faff about googling famous singers lockdown breaking you/anyone would find where I lived.

She was here for the whole of the long lockdown and I saw her a number of times.

dooneyousmugelf · 16/12/2022 21:11

I didn't perceive it as negative or 'making much of it'. It made for an amusing anecdote (Oprah's comment), that's all. And showed some normality. I don't know why every little thing has to be twisted in regards to these two.

Nw22 · 17/12/2022 08:31

@Aspiringmatriarch but why would the British government pay for their security in another country? And they had plenty of their own money to sort their own security.

I don't think the British government should pay, but Charles arranged private security for Camilla before they were married. Something like that should have happened, not just three weeks notice and you're on your own. You don't take risks with your family's safety, surely.

CathyorClaire · 17/12/2022 11:49

they paid back £2.4million for Frogmore renovations.

Is there any detail yet on how the rent element (eighteen months at market rate) of the repayment came to be included without it increasing and who trousered said rent?

'Cos someone must have been left out of pocket.

So Nottingham cottage looks extremely cute but when you look up the square footage it's 1200 square feet. So it's less than twice the size of my (very small Victorian terraced) house. If I were buying a new house I would easily want one with twice the square footage just for me.

The other side to that is I don't have access to the rest of KP for putting up guests/outsourcing complex catering/storing anything I can't fit into the house. If I had that then it would be much easier to manage with a small house.

But I can see why it would feel pretty small, especially if you've previously been well off in the US/Canada where house sizes are just much bigger.

I am not sure you have your measurements correct. My detached cottage is about 1352 square feet. It has 3 bedrooms, a dining room, a sun room, two bathrooms, lounge, study, utility room and big kitchen (island in the middle and breakfast bar/aga etc). Whilst it is not a mansion it is plenty big enough for two of us and our daughter and dog.

TheFairyCaravan · 15/12/2022 22:39

Get a grip. They were referring to whoever it had been built for because the ceilings were low. That wouldn’t have been William would it, now?

They paid back all the money that was used to renovate Frogmore Cottage. It’s a pity his brother doesn’t do the same. How many houses has he got? Is it 4?

So you think the future King should pay for renovations to his apartment? From which fund? The income from the Duchy Estates? That would be a bit odd. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. The point is that Harry was given a grace and favour house, spent a fortune on renovations which came from tay payers, then buggered off. I'm not convinced they paid it all back anyway.

Roussette · 19/12/2022 09:49

Well... it's in the yearly Royal Report. Maybe take it up with the Palace if you don't believe it.

God, it's getting pathetic the knocking of them.
