Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

Haven't read the whole thread but my takeaways were:

  • they seem really in love
  • the info on how the palace PR teams work was really interesting
  • I love Meghan's style and make up
  • their house is gorgeous
  • I want to visit California asap
  • Surely there's nothing more to say now - good luck to them both

I'm gobsmacked that Camilla can host Jeremy Clarkson when he has published such a vile rant. Does anyone know the timing on it? Was it before the reception? If so, it's disgusting. Whatever Camilla thinks of Meghan, this is the mother of her husband's grandchildren.

They were never going to accept her. The rude sniggering and side eyes during the wedding from Camilla, Kate, Zara and Beatrice was appalling. She was too much of a strong women and they didn't like her having opinions. The role of royal wife is very much stepford and that's not Meghan.

I think most people watching the wedding that day would have been hard pressed to keep a straight face when the Bishop was saying his piece (that was about the length of a roll of wallpaper)

Quirkyme · 17/12/2022 17:46

I actually felt Bishop Curry's sermon was beautiful.

MrsTumblebee · 17/12/2022 17:54

Good lord -it just shows that the RF are using people as their mouthpiece. Disgraceful. Yes I'm so glad Harry and Meghan spoke out and got out

Camilla was a guest at the party. Its not as if she hosted it herself. For all we know she may have avoided them like the plague during the lunch.

Parts of it were then he got caught up in the moment and didn’t know when to stop.

When I complain about offensive crap I'm told on mn why do I read it or watch it! Despite it being all over the news and sadly unavoidable.

I'd suggest you follow your own advice. Jeremy Clarkson is known to be a bit of a mouthy oaf so I'd scroll past anything he has to say. I think his tongue was firmly in his cheek and I doubt he really wants her paraded naked whilst people throw excrement at her Grin

No. It was hosted by Ewan Venters the former head of Fortnum and Mason.

Rhondaa · 17/12/2022 18:01

'She hosted it!'

Oh unclench for goodness sake he's a mouthy TV presenter not a serial killer.

lollipoprainbow · 17/12/2022 18:01

@Roussette disgusting isn't it

No idea what you're on about. The article was posted on here in a post so I read it! I can't remember telling you not to watch anything?
Whether he meant it or not (obviously not) it's vile saying it. And JC does have fans on MN.

Weird

@Janiie please show us any article that is as bad as that one about any other member of the royal family.

Anyone, including the MM haters on this website, who don't call this out for the disgusting hatred it is, is a despicable person.

I think the one you read was wrong. Just as the early edition of the one I read was also wrong. Later in the morning the papers had corrected their error and were saying it was hosted by Ewan Venters.

And there’s no need to be sarcastic. You were wrong. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

derxa · 17/12/2022 18:12

The glitzy event at the Michelin-starred restaurant, owned by Angela Hartnett, was hosted by Ewan Venters, the former head of royal grocer Fortnum & Mason.

'I can't remember telling you not to watch anything?'

Oh I definitely recall comments about ignoring Winfry, Why read Finding Freedom?! (As if I would) Why comment on this latest reveal in a tawdry reality show if I disapprove.

So again follow your own advice and ignore Jezza. why be outraged by him? You cant be suprised surely. It's what he does. Ignore it if you don't find it funny. He was joking, in bad taste yes but Markle isn't really worse than Rose West but of course some people will take him literally, i bet there's a sad faced teary shot being posed for in Monticeto as we speak.

derxa · 17/12/2022 18:15

I hope no one is going to have a go at Angela Hartnett over this. I love her.

So the party was all about him and nothing to do with Camilla? I'm confused because everywhere I look it says it was her party.

4 hours ago is the most recent I can find... 'Queen Consort Camilla recently hosted an exclusive Christmas lunch where Dame Judi Dench, Claudia Winkleman and Jeremy Clarkson were also present'

I am too confused by what you're trying to say. Saying it's OK is not ok and mocking the person it is said about is not OK either

MarshaMelrose · 17/12/2022 18:20

Taken from the mail article...
The event on Wednesday was a purely private affair, meaning the Queen Consort was not invited as part of official royal business - and
her attendance will have likely ensured more stars to turned up to the evening.
