Discussing the things we liked about Harry and Meghan's Netflix documentary series

1000 replies

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/12/2022 14:22

There are so many threads on things posters hated about Harry and Meghan, the Netflix series, and fair play to those posters, so I thought I would have a go at stating a thread discussing some of the things that posters liked about the series.

I'll start.

I liked that this was supposed to be this bomb detonation, but has actually been a measured, warm, and loving look at H and M's relationship, and the pressures that the press put on them, and also on other royals. I genuinely did not notice anything incendiary. Maybe that is still to come.

I enjoyed the thoughtful insights shared on the invisible contract, especially, as Harry says, having to perform for a press that you know has said hurtful things about people you love.

I loved the warm memories of Sandringham, and meeting the Queen. And Meghan's memories of growing up. I think it was a wise, though sad, that they did not include Thomas. I really loved hearing Doria: my favourite bit is when a journalist offered her money, for an interview about Meghan and she said, "That's my child!"

I also learned for the first time about Meghan's relationship with her sister Samantha's daughter Ashleigh. I had no idea that she had been raised by her grandparents who adopted her, or that she had such a warm and caring relationship with Meghan. Along with Doria's, that was my favourite interview.

I enjoyed hearing from her childhood friends, as it is often said here that she had no friends who came to the wedding etc, just celebrities. They seem a tight nit grip who have been here fr years, and I am glad she has them.

I was gobsmacked that she needed security in Toronto after the relationship was announced.

I also thought the discussion on racism, in its wider context of colonialism and imperialism, was very well done, but then again it was led by David Olusoga and Afua Hirsch, who are always great, and I love their writing.

Most of all I love that Harry confronted head on the Nazi uniform debacle, and what he learned from it. And I loved, loved, loved, the segment on his life in Lesotho where they gave him the Sesotho name, "Mahale". A wonderful name.

“It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life,” Harry said. “I felt so ashamed afterwards. All I wanted to do was make it right. I sat down and spoke to the chief rabbi in London, which had a profound effect on me. I went to Berlin and spoke to a Holocaust survivor. I could have just ignored it and made the same mistakes over again in my life. But I learned from that.”

I predicted on another thread that Harry would address this and other episodes head on in his book. I was scoffed roundly for this. I expect him to say more in is book, and I am happy to be proved right.

If only for this, I am very glad they did this.

'They're hardly going to spell it out in a whatsapp by saying 'let's make H&M look bad, here's a story for you'.

Somebody, somewhere would have a 'receipt'. Yet we just have Harry's wails and delusions.

You hate H&M too much judging by all your comments. I think you need to question why this is. Genuinely, what is it driving you to feel so angry about H&M? You don't have to like them, you can find them irritating but to hate someone you don't know, I find that a bit strange.

So you are saying that a journalist would actually type out (evidential) a message saying 'We KP Comms team want to make H&M look bad, so here's a corker for you to publish!'
Come on 🤣 As if!

They just give them the story. That's all that's needed.

Back to rerailing the thread (clue is in the title) things we liked
Have just come to end of episode 4
I liked the former nanny - I also had one of my babies on my back like that
I liked the South African tour footage and reference to Maya Angelou -I do not want to slow down the thread but footage of Maya performing Still I rise always make me smile. Showed it to my daughter the other week.
I continue to like Doria.
I liked that Meghan's friends were steadfast.
I liked that Meghan did talk about depression - I could barely stand after my kids' births, let alone pose for official photos or do tours. Kudos.
I liked that Danny Baker was called out for that chimp tweet, even if not mentioned by name. It was a shitty tweet and I said so at the time.
Above all. I like that Piers Morgan is still frothing - best thing for that clown would be if everyone unfollows the wanker.

I loved what they did with Piers Morgan @SequinsandStilettos

They reduced him to being a cheerleader for Meghan.

Nicely done!!

I have that to look forward to mrsmax am starting Episode 5 now. Am trying not to watch it all at once but I am failing. I am finding lots to like. Even little things - my own kids used to do maize mazes so lots of my own memories flooding back.

It was a disgusting tweet, I could not believe it at the time. Stupid stupid man. Interestingly, he has this morning been offered a CBE in the New Years Honours List, and has rejected it.

'Don't know why people still insist on denying that the palace was leaking when the reporters themselves keep telling us they do'

So let's see or hear the proof! A recorded meeting or phone call, a WhatsApp, an email, something. I mean all this leaking there must be a shred of evidence surely. Perhaps the Palace staff go out in disguise and meet journalists down dark allies to give them the goss? Even so you'd think someone would furtively press 'record'. Its all just desperate claims to sully KP as Harry thinks he should be King and M should be Queen Grin.

Are you demanding proof from the likes of the DM?

Meghan had a hissy fit over a tiara? Where's the proof? Who's the "source from the palace"?

MrsMaxDeWinter · 17/12/2022 15:44

Oh wow.

Just read about Jeremy Clarkson talking about how he hates Meghan more than Rose West and fantasies about her being paraded naked while people throw shit at her.

Yes - CBE for Danny Baker, really?!- what the hell! I wish he had accepted it, just to see how that would have played out.
So you have editor Edward Verity testifying he got drafts of the letter from a source senior in the royal household. Of course they wanted them to keep schtum as they've fed her to the press, not only chucking her under the bus but reversing back over her!

SequinsandStilettos · 17/12/2022 15:55

The receipt was in episode 5. Are you not actually watching?
They have a signed witness from the editor of Mail on Sunday at the time Ted Verity (never was a surname more ironic) stating he got drafts of the letter Meg wrote to her Dad from a royal senior household source.

I liked the sunset in Canada and Archie giggling (love babies giggling).
I liked the public funding=public interest comment.
I do think the couple could have done Commonwealth work in Canada or NZ (as a pp said, the attitude towards another ex-pat European royal markedly different) or thrived doing charity work in SA. She would have been an ideal figurehead there, a real asset, and Charles, Will and Queenie had all signed off already.
It's also interesting how Queenie made plans to see Harry on the 6th then reneged - I wonder why she changed her mind. She was head of the firm ffs, surely whoever "they" were (feels like Yes Prime Minister with advisors and machinations afoot) she could have overridden them. Equally. regardless of leaks and public debate, surely Palace could have just gone ahead with the SA plan.
Instead, Canada plans leaked and yet more bad press.
Three most senior private secretaries rejecting meetings (on behalf of Will, Charles and Queenie) until Meg out the way. 5 options from all in to all out, but option 3 half in half out, not on the table, despite being a proposal on the table.
Will screaming. Harry not even being asked about having his name on the joint statement. It all stinks to high heaven.

@MrsMaxDeWinter do you realize that links and googling and “researching” perpetuated the media frenzy? Real or not even my commenting adds to the insanity. And in order for there to be any hope that any of them return to a normal life 90% of this needs to stop? Difficult I know but none of it is right.
journo’s trolling MN for stories is not uncommon that’s how low the press goes.
and we know 80% of what’s said on here is made up.

Good lord -it just shows that the RF are using people as their mouthpiece. Disgraceful. Yes I'm so glad Harry and Meghan spoke out and got out.

Quirkyme · 17/12/2022 16:31

What Clarkson has said about MM is absolutely vile. Absolutely not on.

I don't even have the words.

Inkanta · 17/12/2022 16:37

It blows my mind that the Queen Consort can openly be friends with someone who writes such hateful bile and Piers Morgan.. It’s a disgrace that a national newspaper can print such an article & utterly shameful the royals encourage it. I’m ashamed of my country.

I liked the analysis of the hate tweets - reminded me of some of the obsessives on here. As for Sam Markle, no words. Monetising and Hatred does sum it all up (have noticed it on Quora too - randos asking questions about H+M to make cash).
I liked Archie saying The Gruffalo (again, own memories here. Lost count of number of times I read that. Even got a Scottish version of it to ring the changes!) and playing musical saucepans.
The editing is excellent.
I love the photo of them under the umbrella. Love the blue dress and she has a stunning smile in that pic - breathtakingly beautiful. She absolutely suits colour. She looked nice in beige, whites and creams but with all the headlines about breaking royal fashion protocols, she would have been damned for upstaging and grandstanding had she worn red, blue, green, fuchsia...the RF can wear burgundy (and all look fab, I love colour coordination and Katherine is effortlessly chic/well put together) to pretend otherwise but Meghan would have been crucified for colour and vilified for wearing same colour.
It is a shame and it could have ended so differently. I do feel for them, absolutely. I find Meghan likeable and I can empathise with her pain. It's palpable.
I also love David Olusoga. He is all kinds of fabulous.
Okay, one episode to go!
I sincerely hope this documentary and Spare does bring them some closure and catharsis and look forward to seeing what they do next. And fair play to Barbados. Go Jamaica. It will serve the institution right. Meg was an asset and was royally fucked over.

Well, that's just not true.

Edward Verity definitely consulted with an unnamed source at the Palace but he doesn't say he got drafts. He says he was told there were several drafts of the voters and they'd been tweaked electronically. But he does not say he was given the drafts.
