Earthshot Prize Flies in William, Kate, Becks and Celebrities but Winners Zoom In From Home

You can't make this up!

Viewers at home were left unimpressed that the event saw presenters and attendees fly to the East coast city to attend the ceremony, particularly given its sustainability message, while recipients stayed at home to receive their awards virtually.

So the Earshot prize had a glitzy gala in Boston to which its patrons were invited, and lots of celebrities flew in for it but ...

None of the 15 finalists or the 5 winners were flown in to take their moment on the stage.

Instead, the 5 finalists Zoomed in from home.

Apparently to save the planet.

The hypocrisy is staggering.

I did wonder about William and Kates hypocrisy flying un for the Earthshot. Hadn't realised the rest was quite so bad too

LondonWolf · 05/12/2022 07:36

And if everyone had flown in you'd have moaned about that too. Whatever.

Persephonegoddess · 05/12/2022 07:39

I agree it should all have been remote.....

sashagabadon · 05/12/2022 07:40

But each team had 20 people in it so 20 x 3 nominees x 5 categories. That’s hundreds of people. The 5 winners did a lovely price to camera too and showed their invention fully.

BlueKaftan · 05/12/2022 07:42

It sends the message that the rich and powerful can attend glamorous events but that the actual people on the ground doing the work have to stay in their lane. Elitist bullshite as usual.

No I would not.

It would have been at least consistent to fly in the 5 winners.

I mean, it's not "everyone", its just 5 people.

So why not do it?

There were 5 finalists in each category. These were companies not individuals. These companies were literally all over the world - if each companies team was flown in then you would have been whinging about that.

I fully expect the same remarks from you for every single award ceremony going forward. Anything else will be utter hypocrisy.

AutumnCrow · 05/12/2022 07:46

Was it a good programme in general? I didn’t see it.

David Beckham gets on my tits. Maybe he’ll get that knighthood soon and then he can stop turning up to everything looking eager. On the other hand, he’s a twat.

I enjoyed learning about the finalists work - we got really in depth profiles about each.
Really interesting scientific and climate development and research going on, that is effective.

gogohmm · 05/12/2022 07:53

They were big teams though - didn't see it all because I was cooking but there were 20 or more individuals involved in the turtle project, if they had flown them, only two probably would have got the chance to appear. Not sure how big the event was in Boston? I know Kate's dress was rented apparently (couldn't she just have worn something she already owned?)

smilesy · 05/12/2022 07:53

They’re already another thread trying to rubbish Earthshot just because it is fronted by the Prince of Wales. It’s a good initiative of which he is just the figurehead, much like Harry and Invictus. As pp have said, all the winners were teams of about 20
people. There were five teams in each category, so it would be considerably more then just the 5 winners anyway, unless the winners were told they had won in advance which is not how these things normally work.

EatYourVegetables · 05/12/2022 07:57

I am very worried about climate change, but for this particular event surely the benefits outweigh the cost of flying. YABU.

BlueKaftan · 05/12/2022 07:58

They could have chosen a representative from each team to attend. Why is it so hard for people to understand how offensive this is?

You are wrong.

The five individuals representing the winning entities, all of them tiny start ups, are listed on Earshot's own website.

It was these five who Zoomed in

So why not just fly them in?

They are listed because the ceremony took place a few days ago. That’s why they are already on the website.

smilesy · 05/12/2022 08:07

Posted too soon.
Presumably all the teams were waiting on zoom or whatever to see if they had won.

The way they are falling over their backsides to justify the winners not attending, just because it's William and Kate, is laughable.

Like no one has ever heard of sending one person to represent an organisation.

When the UN won the Nobel Peace Prize, they sent their Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, to pick the award for an organisation employing thousands across the world.

Ditto when the EU won.

Clearly a concept unheard of on Mumsnet.

Surely you use celebs for this sort of thing so you get the publicity, the TV show, the huge prize etc? So you need them there. You could say why was it in the US but I suspect that's where the money is? Or influence?

I just think it’s a shame to rubbish this because it is Williams initiative. You would not do so if it was Harry.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/12/2022 08:17

Also, W&K didn't just fly in for the event. They added various other visits to initiatives and representatives, met the president etc. So it was a work trip, part of which they presented an award, and they flew commercial for it so the plane was going anyways.

It’s not 5 people , it’s 5 organisations so potentially about 100 people !

Samcro · 05/12/2022 09:35

double standards. PW does something hypocritical = excuses made
PH does something hypocritical= masses of threads and posts ripping him apart.

headstone · 05/12/2022 09:49

This is why I hate rich celebrities bleating on about the environment. What they mean is that the hoi polloi need to stop travelling and eating meat and live with less, not them of course.

sashagabadon · 05/12/2022 10:07

But if you fly in the winners only then they know they have won and what happens to all the other nominees?
honestly I think that is a barking complaint!
it does seem people are being critical just because it is a pow initiative but I guess if this is the main complaint then the event has been a success. All the winners and the nominees were inspiring

smilesy · 05/12/2022 10:22

Ironically, on the other thread, posters are complaining that in fact some of these entities are already established so why are they winning! The point of the prize is to help to upscale ideas that are already making a difference, so no, they are not all tiny startups
