The royal family

Kate and William booed at Celtic game in Boston

Kate and William have six events on their trip to Boston, one of which is attending a Celtic baseball game. Every time their faces were shown on the Jumbotron ( giant TV screen) they were booed and there were chants of USA. William and Kate reportedly looked very uncomfortable at the game.

They hadn't done anything wrong at the game. They turned up suitably dressed and watched the game, that was all.

But I think going to Boston and especially to the Celtics game was always a mistake. They seem to operate on the basis that everyone will be thrilled to see the Royal Family and do not appear to understand that this is not always the case. They need to choose the places they visit much more carefully and drop any outdated beliefs that they will be welcome everywhere they go.

I agree the Celtics game was a bad choice. I feel there is an element of reflexive “Boo, the Oppressor” when dealing with an historically Irish American team/population.

I'm not from the UK and have seen a couple of threads now about William and Kate going to Boston and I don't understand why there is so much hate. If people don't care about them then why are they investing so much negative energy in what they do?

antelopevalley · 01/12/2022 15:47

Boston is full of Irish Americans who hate England. The Royal Family are a potent symbol of English oppression to many.

A lot of people in Boston don't care about the Royal Family at all. But at a Celtics game you are going to run into far more Irish Americans who are anti the Royal Family.

I do not know who suggested a visit to the game but this issue could have been foreseen. After the Caribbean trip, William made it clear that he and Kate are taking control of future trips and not leaving it to aides. So all I can think is that William and Kate assumed there would be no issues in the US and did nothing to understand why some people in Boston would not be happy to see them.

It shows they've learned nothing from their disasters in the Caribbean, they seem to still think everyone will always be happy to see them

If they are stupid enough to go to one of the most Irish venues in the most Irish city in the US, they'll just have to suck it up.

RaRaRaspoutine · 01/12/2022 16:26

The chants of USA! USA! really caught me off guard and I'm very anti-monarchy. Ouch lmao.

SenecaFallsRedux · 01/12/2022 16:30

it was basketball, not baseball.

thereisonlyoneofme · 01/12/2022 16:31

I dont think they get to choose where they visit, its the government or similar

greenhousegal · 01/12/2022 16:34

Inevitable, given the venue, team, and "Irishness" of the city. That's not to say that Irish people in Ireland hate Royalty, but often the old ways and history live on in the diaspora.

Bad choice. Again...

AllyCatTown · 01/12/2022 16:34

They’d get the same or worse at a Celtic game in Glasgow. Choosing a sporting game with an Irish connection is just a daft choice. Who ever made their schedule is clueless.

Ah sorry!

They said after the Caribbean tour they would take control of where they visited to avoid the issues there were on that tour.
And no one in a foreign country can make them go somewhere. They are visiting Boston for the Earthshot awards, not to make nice on behalf if the UK government with a country we have difficult relationships with.

Ah. Heard they weee booed but assumed it was something to do with Harry and Megan and the latest rascist dramas at the palace.didn't realise they were at a Celtics game.

Irish Americans often have a batshit view of the U.K. which bears no resemblance to modern Irish/U.K. relations. Have met US "Irish" citizens who have never set foot in Ireland who "hate" the British. Thankfully Clinton put Sinn Fein/IRA on a list of
terrorist organisations so their funding dried up. Made the Good Friday agreement happen a lot faster in my opinion.

Not the wisest choice to go to the Celtic's game but unfortunately given the size of British's former "empire" there's a lot of cultural sensitivity to navigate globally

plinkypots · 01/12/2022 16:52

The Celtic's game was a stupid move. I don't ther the sense they much cAre the US and the feeling is fairly mutual. Jo Biden is certainly not a big fan!

drkpl · 01/12/2022 16:54

The ‘Irish’ Americans need to get over themselves considering they’re only Irish via their great-great-great grandfather. They have a cheek to call themselves Irish considering their families probably haven’t set foot in Ireland for generations.

IntentionalError · 01/12/2022 16:55

WTF did these muppets expect at a Celtics game? Fucking curtesys?

How about going to a GAA game at Croke Park next. Should get a friendly welcome there…

This ^^ and plenty of actual Irish people don’t have that same chip on the shoulder, what with many of them having English relatives, and/or no particular issue with England.

ComfortablyDazed · 01/12/2022 16:57

Or not….

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/12/2022 17:22

Wasn't it 9/11 which brought a lot of that about, TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams?

The IRA got an awful lot of money from the bars of Boston, but doubtless it all looked less appealing when the US itself was hit by terrorism - especially as Boston was where the murderers took off from

Mrsrasputian · 01/12/2022 17:24

Pair of absolute muppets! What did they think would happen at a celtics game. They were the same in the Caribbean!

No self awareness at all. Hope they never come to Glasgow!

The Good Friday agreement was about 4 years before 9/11, so I doubt it Confused

I was really surprised (not in a good way) that someone thought sending W&K to watch a Celtics game was a good idea. A lot of Irish Americans are from families that emigrated to the US during the Great Hunger of the 1840s and many of them are not well disposed to the English to this day. I feel for W&K - their last tour to the Caribbean was dogged by negative press and now another racism row, a badly thought out visit to a place they were unlikely to be welcome and bloody Meghan and Harry with their latest attention-seeking tosh. I think if I were them I'd stay at home in future!

gogohmm · 01/12/2022 17:31

The problem is that organisations like sports teams want them to come, but don't consider their fans

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2022 17:33

WTF were they thinking?🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️
