The royal family

Kate and William booed at Celtic game in Boston

Kate and William have six events on their trip to Boston, one of which is attending a Celtic baseball game. Every time their faces were shown on the Jumbotron ( giant TV screen) they were booed and there were chants of USA. William and Kate reportedly looked very uncomfortable at the game.

They hadn't done anything wrong at the game. They turned up suitably dressed and watched the game, that was all.

But I think going to Boston and especially to the Celtics game was always a mistake. They seem to operate on the basis that everyone will be thrilled to see the Royal Family and do not appear to understand that this is not always the case. They need to choose the places they visit much more carefully and drop any outdated beliefs that they will be welcome everywhere they go.

I think they are so shielded from any criticism in the UK that they just assume they are equally admired abroad. It’s a good lesson to them (and to the British public) and serves as a reminder that the RF is not so popular in other countries.

@Facecream bit many any people who actually live in ireland wouldn't do this , its history , how long do you hold that grudge for ? Is it not better to be part of change and making things better

Mrsrasputian · 01/12/2022 19:22

Because of the fawning media and the servile royalists in the UK, they are under the very false illusion that they can Swan around the world and everyone will admire them.
Great lesson for them to realise that they are not liked in many parts of the world because of what they represent.
They should stay at home, and stick to cutting ribbon at village fetes, and Kate can swish her hair.
All will be well for them then😀

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:23

@Blargh exactly , the Irish normally pretty lovely people in my experience and most of the irish americans have never even been to ireland , if you feel that strongly about your heritage you would visit ?
But the poster is very selective n the bits they post

But I can see that it's easy to focus on the negative elements of the royals if you look mainly at the British press (especially the Daily Mail, including the US facing Daily Mail which is run by a US team but reads just like the UK version in tone) - and if you look at Twitter and follow certain posters there or certain hashtags.

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:29

@Facecream they would of been invited not just shown up and you don't know them at all and maybe they did think people may judge them for them and what they have done not their families who they didn't meet or know.
All this hate and bitterness doesn't help anyone And booing is pretty childish when all said and done
But I am sure they never just showed up , if they had declined the invitation that would of looked bad as well

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 01/12/2022 19:31

Excellent. Thanks for bringing to our attention @antelopevalley@antelopevalley

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:31

@LindorDoubleChoc its been banned at games to be disrespectful when engljand play Germany etc and very much frowned upon and yes I don't know any british people really that have hate for the germans now despite maybe loosing relatives in the war or had grandparents who told them the horriics

Blargh · 01/12/2022 19:31

Facecream · 01/12/2022 18:56

@Blargh
Im Irish - from Ireland so I don’t need the history but it’s missing the point to say the people who emigrated thrived - did they?
Do you feel the same about Afghans and Iraqis who left their countries or the Windrush people - just forget about it?
I’n no fan of the “boo” as it’s just, in my view, a polite way of saying I don’t like this/it/you.
It is pointless.
But so are the Royal Family abroad.
Go incognito if you really want to see a Celtic/any other controversial sport or cultural event if you care that much (W&K).
I live in the UK - from your previous post I take it you don’t (could be wrong) - and while many, many Irish people respected the Queen (because of what she did more than her role, though the British might not see the difference) - especially with her visit to Dublin Castle, the Queen wasn’t tone deaf.
The offence to those who had to leave their homes is always greater because the loss is double.
I couldn’t care less if a visiting royal used my loo - happy if they need to.
But I’m still astounding how tone deaf those who come after the Queen are: literally no attempt at treading carefully. Just turn up and expect everyone to think they are incredible for existing

I work with immigrants here, yes, in Ireland, and they are here to escape terrible oppression at home and/or to make a life for themselves in a country that can give them better opportunities. Of course they miss their homes but they are glad to be here. I'm glad my country can help them create a new life for themselves. For the most part, those who immigrate sacrifice a lot but they do so in search of something greater than they leave behind. The Irish who left Ireland for the US, UK, Australia, Canada, etc, did for the most part make better lives for themselves than those who remained. It is only in the last 20 years or so that we've become a country of immigration rather than emigration.

I simply can't get worked up enough about royals coming over here for a visit to care what they think of themselves and or of us. Give them the common courtesy their roles as senior representatives of their country deserves and move on.I think most Irish people are the same. We've moved on from forever picking at the sore of our history to allow ourselves heal and grow. I think a lot of others could do with doing the same

EscapeRoomToTheSun · 01/12/2022 19:32

They really are clueless aren't they. Maybe they should do a short course in Britain's history before they plan any more visits! To be fair there is a large section of the population who could do with one of those.

Quveas · 01/12/2022 19:33

greenhousegal · 01/12/2022 16:34

Inevitable, given the venue, team, and "Irishness" of the city. That's not to say that Irish people in Ireland hate Royalty, but often the old ways and history live on in the diaspora.

Bad choice. Again...

They live on in Ireland and large parts of the rest of the UK too. You don't have to go to the USA to find loads of people opposed to colonialism.

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:35

@Facecream no one win in a war as such the british loat lots of young young men and women and kids and the cost of the war and rebuilding etc hit many generations as well
There is never a winner on war and you guarantee many of those booing won't even know the history fully its just something to be disrespectful too
Politics should bot be brought into sport really , people should go enjoy the game , there are enough worries in the world

They said after the Caribbean tour they would take control of where they visited to avoid the issues there were on that tour.
And no one in a foreign country can make them go somewhere. They are visiting Boston for the Earthshot awards, not to make nice on behalf if the UK government with a country we have difficult relationships with.

Why do you constantly start these mad threads?

They got far more cheers than catcalls. Getting some negatives on any royal event is pretty normal.

And yes, of course they are there for the UK government. They are civil servants, any trip they do gets govt input.

I am not a royal fan BTW, I couldn’t give a fuck, but you are just making up nonsense.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/12/2022 19:37

The Good Friday agreement was about 4 years before 9/11

This is perfectly true, Changechangychange, but a paper agreement won't necessarily change what's happening at the grassroots in its entirety, and collections in the bars of Boston "for the boys" continued well beyond the GFA

I wouldn't dispute that the agreement had some effect on the support, but to suggest it actually ended it is fanciful at best

ArcaneWireless · 01/12/2022 19:37

It always amazes me that on some social media platforms some are exceptionally willing to pass judgement on others in their posts but very much shut down any judgement towards them.

My dear old nan used to say ‘don’t dish it out if you can’t take it’.

I do think if some are happy to have an opinion, discussion should be encouraged.

By shutting down posters who may have simply stated what they see, just says to me that discussion is not welcomed and that the post or poster the muzzled posters have questioned may be, at best, disingenuous.

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:38

So why my post removed MNHQ i never broke any guidelines ? Or swore etc

The drying up was happening in the years running up to the agreement via Clinton and U2 and all sorts.

9/11 had an impact too of course, but it would be equally fanciful to suggest that that was a big full stop. The people that supported the IRA campaign wouldn’t see it as the same thing as ISIS.

LondonWolf · 01/12/2022 19:40

All seems to be going rather well here tbh.

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:44

@LondonWolf yes not everyone will like them and I don't expect they expect them all to either but always two sides to a story and all that

SanFairyAnnie · 01/12/2022 19:44

Why are they going to see a game of glorified rounders anyway?

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:46

@EscapeRoomToTheSun history is the word though isn't it , when will it be ok for britsih people to visit another 10 generations ?

healthadvice123 · 01/12/2022 19:49

@Mrsrasputian you are aware they are often invited to these countries by heads of state etc
They don't just invite themselves, maybe visiting and working with countries for better futures is the way to go do you not think

ancientgran · 01/12/2022 19:49

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/12/2022 17:33

WTF were they thinking?🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I assumed they were invited. If they'd said no they'd probably be accused of snubbing the team. Sometimes you can't win. Embarrassing for Boston that people can't behave appropriately.
