Kate and William booed at Celtic game in Boston

Kate and William have six events on their trip to Boston, one of which is attending a Celtic baseball game. Every time their faces were shown on the Jumbotron ( giant TV screen) they were booed and there were chants of USA. William and Kate reportedly looked very uncomfortable at the game.

They hadn't done anything wrong at the game. They turned up suitably dressed and watched the game, that was all.

But I think going to Boston and especially to the Celtics game was always a mistake. They seem to operate on the basis that everyone will be thrilled to see the Royal Family and do not appear to understand that this is not always the case. They need to choose the places they visit much more carefully and drop any outdated beliefs that they will be welcome everywhere they go.

Everyone looking pretty happy here too, including the Celts star player Jayson Tatum who came over to meet them...

Boston “Oirish” American attitudes do NOT reflect modern Irish attitudes: you only have to look at the welcome the Queen got here, not to mention Harry and Meghan and Charles and Camilla.

WTF did these muppets expect at a Celtics game? Fucking curtesys?

How about going to a GAA game at Croke Park next. Should get a friendly welcome there…

They've already been to Croke park and tbe Queen also visited. Each of them got a very warm welcome.

Mrsrasputian · 01/12/2022 20:00

@ancientgran WTF does behaving appropriately mean? Some people showed their displeasure because they were there. So what!
There’s no law against it. Would you like to ban protests as well!

But WHY should “visiting officials” be given respect or whatever niceties in PUBLIC?
In State ceremonies or visits - fine.
Would you “boo” Putin?
If Putin were at a Ukrainian football/hockey or whatever game - should he be respected??

Putin is actively at war with Ukraine, he is PERSONALLY involved. William and Kate are being booed because of what their ancestors / the institution did - there’s a big difference. Do also think it’s okay for Germans to be heckled / booed wherever they go? That’s much more recent history but doesn’t seem to happen.

When the people involved are not the actual perpetrators then I think there is a need for basic human decency. No one is asking that they’re cheered or welcomed with open arms but I don’t think there’s any need to boo them either.

Pallisers · 01/12/2022 20:44

I do wish people would actually read the Boston Globe article I posted earlier - and thanks to whoever put it outside the paywall. This is a non story in the place where it actually happened (or rather didn't happen).

You are all frothing over them being muppets or the oirish (so offensive - and by the way I AM Irish) being inappropriate. It is a traditionally noisy crowd and they got cheers and boos as most public figures there in a public capacity would. And for what it is worth the Boston Celtics does not have anything LIKE the connotations/history/political signaling of Celtics in Scotand. The crowd were chanting USA - not A Nation Once Again.

greenhousegal · 01/12/2022 20:45

Rightly or wrongly, visiting Heads of State of other countries are usually not Royalty as in lifers who have the weight of the history of their ancestors on their shoulders. Not to mention their permanence together with vast wealth, jewels, tiaras and all that mullarkey. Anachronism is right for countries that are republics.

Republics can and do get rid of those they do not approve of, see Mr. D Trump for example. Britain cannot do anything about its permanent Head of State. The RF represent historic oppression for many a colonised country. That is their legacy.

ArcaneWireless · 01/12/2022 20:49

There are some days you can’t see for froth @Pallisers

Some can’t help it. Some positively encourage it. Some live and breathe it.

My eyebrow raises that often with some, it is like a little hairy window wiper on the back of my neck.

antelopevalley · 01/12/2022 23:28

For info.
As I said I don't think William and Kate did anything wrong. The reaction was about who they represent, not about them as individuals.

you are WAY overthinking this if you think the celtics fans who booed while others cheered were doing it as some sort of careful political expression of ideas about the UK influence in the world or the royal family.

It was a celtics game. Half the time they boo and cheer whoever comes up on screen during the game. If governor elect Maura Healy had been on screen (she is irish american and a basketball star) she might have got the same. Ditto the Mayor of Boston. Ditto Macron if he appeared.

What strikes me on this weird thread is some people seem to think that complete deference and respect to these two royals is what is expected and anything else - like feeling the hurly burly of a raucous game is a political or anti-royal statement of importance. the waleses don't seem to expect this but many in the UK or maybe just on MN do. odd.

The feeling in Boston is very benign to them. The news stories from the game were about the mixed boos/cheers, that they stayed beyond halftime, what did they talk about with the governor elect and Mayor Wu, the fist bumps they had with nearby fans, the heros among us award given to a young climate activist. Oh also a funny piece about how does Catherine wales manage to look so absolutely thrilled to see everyone.

Pallisers · 02/12/2022 00:02

No self awareness at all. Hope they never come to Glasgow!

Celtics in Glasgow and Celtics in Boston don't mean the same AT ALL. this thread is making me weary.

ArcaneWireless · 02/12/2022 00:19

Weary? Likewise.

And I’m not sure that re-posting the same post with the same links changes anything.

Just like the similar tiny snapshots of sleeves or baby holding.

It is never the whole story. Just a judgement on what some might choose to see.

A bit like looking at the background of the Mona Lisa painting and refusing to acknowledge there is a face there. 🤷🏻‍♀️

UWhatNow · 02/12/2022 00:24

Booing and moronically shouting U.S.A. reflects a mentality that is far more insidious than a couple of vanilla royals sitting at ball game. Calling them ‘muppets’ when they’re just representing the state and probably don’t have much say in the itinerary isn’t particularly bright either. 🙄

MarshaMelrose · 02/12/2022 00:31

Are we seriously saying now that the USA is an oppressed colonised country? 🤔

jesus christ could you actually read any of the posts on here about people who know the celtics and what goes on at games and have read the news in Boston - where we live.

A mentality far more insidious. Have you see English fans at a game? Do they get all deferential if a US president is there? you are so far up your own arse with this.

No one in Boston gives much of a shit (or any tbh) about the british royal family. But equally are happy to welcome two nice youngish people who are here for a nice purpose. Lots of lovely local coverage that has NOTHING in common with the pure fiction on MN.

to have a perfectly normal game turned into muppets/out of control Irish americans shit by the british is so offensive.

Seriously this is such tosh.

Good I’m glad to hear it. But it has been widely reported that they were booed and people chanted ‘USA’. I’ve lived in the US, I know that the British royals are largely irrelevant but the disrespectful booing is moronic. I’m sorry it just is. I feel the same on other contexts too.

Suggest you ask that question of Native Americans...

widely reported where? Certainly not in the mainstream Boston news outlets.

Disrespectful booing Disrespectful to what or who? For fucks sake get over yourself. They were treated the same as any public figure attending a game as a public figure. Raucous cheers and boos. Not a curtesy to the nice royals event.

I live in Boston. no interest in the royals but seeing utter fiction posted as fact if really annoying. I suggest people try actually reading respectable Boston news sites. Start with the Boston Globe. Or go on with the Daily Mail if you prefer that.

This entire thread has made me realise that for many people on MN their interpretation of "news" has no actual relation to what is being reported.

I'm done now but the posts about those two in Boston on MN have been surreal when compared to the actual reality of what they experienced and what has been reported here where it is happening.

MyMumSaysALot · 02/12/2022 02:49

Irish people Irish people Irish people ad nauseam!

Do people on here think Boston is populated by strictly Irish people???

It isn’t. And you haven’t a clue who booed. It wasn’t even that loud or that long or by that many people. You don’t even know if it was Boston residents.

Way to go judging an entire city on your small yardstick. Wow.

Stop oppressing them, then. The British haven't been there for 250 years!

diffandproud · 02/12/2022 03:11

The Irish don't want the royal family anywhere near them and to say that modern Irish/uk relations are all good now is warped. The Irish will never forget.
Too much suffering from the hands of the English to ever be forgotten

Neves7 · 02/12/2022 03:19

They mostly get booed for the large disruption in parking and traffic they cause whenever they go out in public.

Snnowflake · 02/12/2022 07:28

AllyCatTown · 01/12/2022 19:08

I don’t know about Celtic fans. They brought a banner about hating the royal family and chanted through the minute’s silence for death of queen

I'm sad to see that. Scotland is divided by the referendum, divided by Catholic and Protestant and now divided by Royalist non-royalist.

Doesn't the Scottish Gov tell everyone we're welcoming and friendly - yeah, right.
