The long awaited documentray is hitting the screen on December 8th:

What with the award in a few days and the book in January they're ramping up the game.

Depends how you define work. Going out to do all those engagements might sound like play not work but it is still something they have to do so I tihnk it's reasonable to dessribe it as a mind of work.

Novella4 · 09/12/2022 17:02

@xenia

It's not work .
They list a 10 min phone calll as 'work' .
No one has asked them to do this 'work' and nothing would happen if they didn't do it .

Popping up to nod at charity workers etc was never done much before Elizabeth's time . They had to cobble together 'work' to justify their continued existence.
Bet they can't believe they are still getting away with it

MarshaMelrose · 09/12/2022 17:35

Meghan stated in court documents for her case against the Mail that she had never denied that Thomas Markle supported her financially, but that Doria had also contributed to her university fees, and Meghan herself had won a scholarship grant as well as doing work-study to help pay the fees. Also that she'd begun making 'voluntary contributions' to her dad from 2014 when she was earning good money on Suits.

Is that the court case in which she admitted lying? 🤔

Aspiringmatriarch · 09/12/2022 18:16

Are you saying she was lying about the money? The whole Finding Freedom thing has been discussed so many times before, I don't think there's much point in hashing that one out.

CathyorClaire · 09/12/2022 19:54

'All those engagements' still leave them with days and days worth of unaccounted for time to play and they don't 'have' to do them anyway. They could walk away any time they choose but they overwhelmingly don't.

It's not exactly a full time job is it? Two parents 8 weeks off in the summer (balmoral and Norfolk), let alone Easter and Christmas

bakalava · 09/12/2022 20:15

The job is according to the job description developed for them and if you don't like it, take it up with the people who write that. It requires good people skills, long term commitment and good listening skills. That is why not all royals manage to perform in the role.

Roussette · 09/12/2022 20:16

Good luck with that Roussette. I don't imagine the Palace will listen to me.

Where is this job description by the way? I'll try... Grin

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/12/2022 20:47

I'm pretty sure the jobs of the senior royals involve more than just visiting places and shaking hands. Didn't the Queen have a red box every day (apart from Christmas and Easter?) like ministers? And she used to deal with it almost up until her death at 96?

CathyorClaire · 09/12/2022 20:49

By who?

Can you post a link?

Giving her a head start on whining about influencing policies affecting her interests she might disagree with?

Yes. I think she did.

And yet they're unsackable.

Interesting snippets coming out about Netflix. The Palace are already involved in a row about them having approached the Palace for comment. The Palace claim that they received an email from a third party about the documentary, but when they tried to contact Netflix to confirm it was legitimate, they received no reply. Now the BBC are saying they didn’t give Netflix permission to use it (although apparently there is some agreement called “fair dealing” between broadcasters which is what Netflix have used) and they have no idea how Netflix obtained the footage.

smilesy · 09/12/2022 21:06

Sorry a bit went missing. The BBC didn’t give Netflix permission to use footage of the Diana Panorama interview

That's really bitchy actually. I thought you as a poster were better than that.

That's bad

Especially after William said back in May, when the extent of appalling deception had become clear, that no part of the interview should ever be broadcast again

Didn't high-handed never mind-the plebs-who paid-for-it Auntie agree to royal pressure never to air it again?

Good for Netflix.

I've said it (and backed it up) lots of times. Advanced search is your friend.

Good for Netflix.

No formal way to ask, but yes strong public agreement with the findings of the inquiry after the whistleblowing.
And strong support that it should not be shown again

It's a prime example of press intrusion going far too bloody far

It's not an example of 'royal pressure' it's an impact statement, in the same vein as much of what went before Levinson.

It's right that iterviews obtained after the use of deception, and with further deception to maniupulate, should no continue to be broadcast

CathyorClaire · 09/12/2022 21:40

Diana (the media master manipulator) was gagging to tell her side of 'the story'

I think she saw Panorama as a serious platform to do it and snatched their hand off regardless of the warnings from her ghastly brother.

Bashir is undoubtedly lowlife but I don't think he ever needed to go to the lengths he did to persuade her. He's become a convenient scapegoat to hang royal grievances on while pushing a more sympathetic narrative.

That's highly speculative and completely at odds with the findings.

And Bashir was held to have gone to those lengths because that was the way to prsuade someone who was anything but "gagging for it"

As opposed to H and M who do no work at all.

twelly · 09/12/2022 22:05

I thought the programmes were interesting and allowed them to tell their story.

I do sympathise with them regarding the press and feel it must have been like living in a gold fish bowl.

There were a couple of things that were said which I thought were perhaps mocking and mean ie the exaggerated curtsey and the comment re the ripped jeans/bare feet encounter about formality. I think maybe in both instances that was an American view which reflects the different culture.

I felt the inclusion of Brexit footage and the linking of this the documentary strange and also didn't really agree with the points made about race being the reason for negative press. I agree that the press have been unkind to many entering the royal family and think it is unacceptable.I don't think the interview with Diana POW should have been shown at all
