Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

It just seems a bit random. What was the point of his visit exactly? Wandering around alone in a suit with a poppy. It seems a bit sad really.

Readinginthesun · 14/11/2022 17:37

It was a long way to go to pay your respects .

onlylarkin · 14/11/2022 17:40

The point of his visit was to pay respects to veterans?

I mean, do you really wonder why he wanted to pay his respects to over 2,000 men and women who died during WW2?

He is a combat veteran for cripes sake.

onlylarkin · 14/11/2022 17:42

Ok, so for next year he is only allowed to visit a military cemetery in Montecito, not allowed to wear his earned medals from his 2 tours in Afghanistan, and should never ever be photographed lest he be accused of whatever it is the Brits are accusing him of now.

Got it. Maybe someone could send him a memo since so many of you seem to know him so well.

Readinginthesun · 14/11/2022 17:43

Surely there were events closer to home which would have been more appropriate given his well documented concerns have climate change !?

He is allowed to wear his medals . He obviously chose not to on this occasion.

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 17:46

He is not allowed to wear his medals.

He is not allowed to wear his medals.

Yes he can but he is not allowed to wear military uniform .

ShamedBySiri · 14/11/2022 17:49

Perhaps he wanted a break from the wife, and to learn some key WW2 history and explore a beautiful part of the USA? Possibly he is looking to involve himself with USA war veterans moving forward.
All of which seem entirely reasonable.
An American I know with a son in the navy visited the Pearl Harbour memorial (USS Arizona) and found it very moving and very interesting historically.

onlylarkin · 14/11/2022 17:49

@Readinginthesun yes, but last year when he wore him the media tore him apart.

He is allowed to wear his medals. As is every veteran who earned them.

The media tore him apart because he took a photographer with him when he went to pay his respects . It should have been done privately .

Croque · 14/11/2022 18:14

The date also coincided with the Japanese invasion of Malaya which was the first nail in the coffin of the British Empire. 😉

onlylarkin · 14/11/2022 18:15

So veterans should only honor other veterans in private. Got it. So ypu won't complain if the ceremony at the Centopath is canceled next year then.

Or is this another rule that "applies only to Harry"?

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:18

Except he did not take a photographer with him.

ThighMistress · 14/11/2022 18:25

all his therapy seems a bit crap and not worth trumpeting as it has clearly failed. Masses of people lose their parents at a young age, and although it is a dreadful blow, they don’t bang on about it when they’re 40. I know so many who lost their mothers young, and indeed my own much adored father died unexpectedly when I was young and it did blight things to put it extremely mildly.

As Harry he ages he’ll sound more and more like a stuck record. But given that his income is derived from his misery I guess moving on would be a poor economic move.

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:27

@ThighMistress Anyone I know who lost a mother when they were a child felt its effect for the rest of their lives. This included an Aunt, my father-in-law and a friend at school.

AutumnalCrow · 14/11/2022 18:28

If it was a private visit then it should have stayed private, that I agree with.

Unfortunately there are swathes of people now with iPhones linked to their social media accounts. It must be very tiresome (although predictable) to be on the intrusive end of that.

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:28

And I have long thought all the publics talk of mental health is lies. Loads of people attack people affected by traumatic events of they do not like that person/ All this pull your socks up, it is in the past, nothing has really changed.

Croque · 14/11/2022 18:29

It must be a unique kind of therapy to say "You go boy! Go trumpet your sorrows repeatedly to the highest bidders even before you have resolved them and let the critics tear you apart repeatedly. It's really gonna help you to overcome the trauma!"

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:32

@croque do you get pleasure out of being so nasty about a stranger? I ask because I really do not understand the mentality.

Croque · 14/11/2022 18:34

I do feel sorry for him because he is trying to play an alpha protector role to somebody who has recounted their series of woes to him and has convinced him to lead their fight against powerful institutions. But he is not really capable of it, it is a part of his fabric
and his demonstration of outwardly strength will break him all the more faster.

This 100%. Harry is a public figure. He doesnt get to go get a normal 9 - 5 job. When he is in public,, someone will take photos of him. And there will always be a company willing to pay big money for those photos. Who then sell them to the likes of the DM. The DM buys them because the same people who say over and over they wish he would go away click on any article it posts about them. And every click = ad revenue, so the cycle keeps happening.

Every person who says they hate H&M and wish they would go away have an active role in the cycle when they click on those links.

Seems a bit counter productive to me.

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:40

Agreed.
You want Harry and Meghan to go away? Stop talking about them and sharing articles about them. It is those who are constantly critical who bring their names into any thread about the Royals.

Readinginthesun · 14/11/2022 18:44

antelopevalley · 14/11/2022 18:18

Except he did not take a photographer with him.

He took photographer Lee Morgan 2 years ago when he and M visited a veterans’ cemetery.

onlylarkin · 14/11/2022 18:44

The funny thing is, they are laughing all the way to the bank. They don't care if you hate them. Your hatred sells his book and her podcast. Because every time someone who doesn't like them posts something negative, another someone wants to see what the fuss is about and actively searches them out to see what the big deal is. And then they listen to the podcast or buy the book.

By spending the days bitching, you are actively helping them become more popular. Especially here in the US.
