Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

And people blame his father and his family for Harry's mental health issues. Mystifying although both of them going on TV and talking about their marriage/affairs etc won't have helped.

Yes this is what surprised me about him choosing to do his various interviews - it can't have been easy for him and William when their parents did the same kind of TV confessional.

I can't imagine what they were thinking of but it certainly wasn't William and Harry.

ThighMistress · 08/11/2022 16:45

Apparently there is a bit of “mental trouble” in the Spencer/Shand Kydd families.

as for this wondrous book (according to OP - the OP gave me a good laugh) surely it’s H&M’s last throw of the dice as far as slagging off the rf is concerned. No one is going to be forking out for books 2,3,4,5,6….. After its publication they are really on their own; I can’t see that they’d be very welcome at the Coronation if the book is juicy enough. And so they will be reliant on their own efforts to earn money.

Except, it would never do for a 'Prince' to be down on his uppers, so they are protected whatever happens and I have a nasty suspicion that their safety net will always be the taxpayer.

I think Eton was nice and near for visiting. And of course William benefited from cosy Sunday afternoon teas with The Queen. Not sure if Harry had the same, eg after William had left Eton.

When you think of all the tours etc Diana (and Charles) did, the boys boarding from age (?) 8, and then after the separation splitting their holidays etc 50/50 with Charles and Diana you could probably count the number of days Diana (and Charles) actually spent in their company during their childhood. It won't be many!
(Charles presumably had more after Diana's death as he then had 100% holiday time though he may not have been around 100% of that time).

Wasn't there a thing, a while ago, no doubt intended to assuage the guilt of working mothers, about quality time v quantity?
I think divorced Royals with children at boarding school probably push that theory to its limits.

"mental trouble" WTF!!
Are we back in the 1950s in terms of understanding mental ill health?

ThighMistress · 08/11/2022 22:38

I used the term in inverted commas . Use your loaf before climbing onto your (very selective) high horse.

Samcro · 09/11/2022 07:52

its very telling that the only way posters can find to slag H off on a thread about a book they have not read is to talk about how thick he is supposed to be and make up absolute bollocks about disability. vile and bordering ableist. really shows how low the haters will go.

ThighMistress · 09/11/2022 08:37

I would bet H’s book deal that the posters up in arms about health and disability would have been in the front row to sneer at the RF and other aristos being inbred and thick before they decided that Harry was a saint. It is so peculiar that he has been canonised now whereas if he had married Chelsey Davey some posters wouldn’t have given his health a second thought and if they had they would have been guffawing at him and citing any amount of “mad” ancestors.

What?

I'm not a royalist but have not called any of the RF thick or stupid ever ever ever. Harry has been called all manner of things as far as his intelligence on this thread. It's revolting

I agree that calling him thick (let alone mentioning learning disabilities) is not particularly enlightening. I'm not sure that's the ONLY way he has been slagged off on this thread though - there's also quite a lot about some of the choices he has made.

ThighMistress · 09/11/2022 09:34

Yes, he repeatedly makes poor choices (as do some of his close relatives!). Perhaps that comes of living such a “protected” life - mistakes large or small are either not mentioned or nicely cleaned up for you.

Since “finding freedom”, though, he doesn’t get that freedom equals exposure. When he talked about the Commonwealth, for example, clearly not having a clue what it was or its origins, that is an example of his not getting that a) a smarter person would have done their research and b) a smarter royal would be informed about their history anyway.

Croque · 09/11/2022 09:46

Neurodiversity is a fact of life. The damage is caused by the well-meaning drama llamas who see it as a dirty secret. They go up in arms as soon as it is mentioned like on this thread. They end up stigmatizing it. It is not a very modern attitude and really unhelpful.

My DC have some neurodiverse friends and when they do talk about their conditions, it is openly without feeling embarrassed or abnormal (they hardly talk about it at all but that is only because there are more interesting things for people to talk about). Get a grip.

hoooops · 09/11/2022 10:05

How is Harry ND though, what are you basing that on?

Very true. I think he’s a Babe on the Woods really so far as real life is concerned. Even int he Army he had protection and special privileges I bet.

I do find his ignorance about his own family and the Commonwealth stunning though. He doesn’t seem to have learned much in his History lessons or from Granny.

Roussette · 09/11/2022 11:38

I can't believe some of the posts on here

Any other famous person, they wouldn't be allowed but no holds barred. Apparently.

antelopevalley · 09/11/2022 12:07

@Roussette I know it is crazy talk on here. I feel like I have stumbled onto David Icke Forums.

please do not direct that to me, posters like you have been posting made up bollocks about him having LDS. its not a dirty secret, its not a fact.
I know a lot about LDS and find that using it as another stick to be someone who have never said he has a disability offensive.

made up armchair bullshit.

hoooops · 09/11/2022 14:28

One minute it's learning disabilities and the next it's neurodiversity - what is Harry's actual diagnosis then, both of these? What form do they take, what are his symptoms? @Croque

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/11/2022 14:42

Made up armchair bullshit

Nothing new in that, Samcro; as we see time and again many MNers just love to diagnose MH difficulties and neurodiversities of every type. You only have to look at the endless threads where it's insisted that such-and-such must have ADHD, even when those who know them are clear that they haven't

And unless Harry chose to share an actual diagnosis I'm not sure how we'd know anyway, since diagnoses are rightly private in the UK and California

Samcro · 09/11/2022 15:00

@Puzzledandpissedoff so agree.
I would like to see proof or a source seeing as that poster asks other for it.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/11/2022 15:04

You and me both, Samcro, but for the reasons stated I doubt proof will be available - TBH I'm not sure how it could be unless Harry himself chooses to give details, and even then his past inaccuracies would make me wonder

Samcro · 09/11/2022 15:06

@Puzzledandpissedoff what gets me is that these things are then taken as fact as people read is somewhere.

Croque · 09/11/2022 15:49

When people whose opinions you give zero fs about and you do not interact with suddenly try to pick a bun fight 💀
