Prince Harry's Memoir: A World Publishing Phenomenon

MrsMaxDeWinter · 27/10/2022 12:41

There will likely be several bashing threads on Harry's memoir before it is published, but I am interested in discussing with anyone who is interested in the very interesting marketing choices of the publishers and their approach.

English language editions of SPARE will be published on 10 January 2023 in EIGHT territories: the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and Canada.

The book will also be published in translation in 15 additional languages:

SPANISH Plaza & Janés/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial
GERMAN Penguin Verlag/Penguin Random House Verlagsgruppe GmbH, PORTUGUESE BRAZIL Objetiva/Grupo Companhia das Letras
PORTUGUESE PORTUGAL Objectiva/Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, SIMPLIFIED CHINESE Penguin Random House China
DANISH Politikens Forlag
DUTCH Hollands Diep, an imprint of Overamstel
FINNISH Otava Publishing Company Ltd
FRENCH Éditions Fayard
GREEK Pedio Books
HUNGARIAN Corvina Kiadó
ITALIAN Mondadori,
POLISH Wydawnictwo Marginesy,
ROMANIAN Nemira Publishing House,
SWEDISH Albert Bonniers Förlag.

This is absolutely sensational as it means it will be simultaneously published in 23 territories on the same day.

There are not many books where simultaneous release occurs in different markets. From this, I would say that the book will more than earn its advance, just from the foreign sales alone.

They also chose a banger of a title as it puts focus on the troubling notion of the Spare in a system based on primogeniture, and one that imbues both intrinsic and extrinsic value based on a person's birth order.

Imagine growing up knowing that no matter how loved you may be, your constitutional role is ultimately to be the spare to the heir.

Can't wait to read it!

It always gets so tense in these M+H forums. They need to change the title to M+H and other royals.

😁😁

Great idea!

And what was your subject?

MrsMaxDeWinter · 29/10/2022 21:08

Gosh OP you really went to Oxbridge? As in, you went to uni to get an undergrad degree? Oh my

Why are you so surprised that I went to an Oxbridge college? They do let in African students you know. I am obviously not going to say whether I'm a Cantabrian or an Oxonian, thus the deliberate use of Oxbridge. And I am certainly not telling you what I read either.😚

Not sure what your ethnic heritage has to do with going to Oxbridge. Did you finish your degree? Was it useful?

Oh and I would assume you are not a Cantabrian 😅

BlueRidge · 29/10/2022 21:45

Oh, I thought the term was Cantabrigian?
Am I wrong?

Roussette · 30/10/2022 00:34

I cannot believe posters come on here and question another poster about their education, their degree course, did they finish their degree and what was it in 😲😲

How bloody rude
When I say I can't believe it, I actually can. Someone actually told me I was lying about my education (or lack of it) when I mentioned it in passing.
@MrsMaxDeWinter Ignore the prying rude posters who are trying to get one over on you
Or report them

MrsMaxDeWinter · 30/10/2022 02:40

@Roussette I know what it is about, believe me. These posters know exactly what they are doing and why. When people lose arguments they go ad hominem.

Great to see you around.

Just wanted to say @MrsMaxDeWinter I admire the way you’re handling some of the posters on here. I’ve really enjoyed reading your responses. There are a couple on this thread who have been pretty infantile and passive aggressive to boot. I would have responded with a lot worse to be honest and I wouldn’t have been proud of myself.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 30/10/2022 06:09

@mrschocolatte You are so kind.

I have encountered this before on other threads. I now know that when the code language, dog whistles and sneering start, it is about to get unpleasant, so I step back a bit before responding. It's honestly fine.

I have an amusing update for @hoooops : I am reading on Twitter ( an account run by R.S. Locke royal_suitor) that the full results of the poll I posted were so unfavourable to Camilla that the Daily Mail left her out so that Meghan could be the least popular.😁

Sorry to read some of the comments here. From what I read it started with a pp alluding that you could not be black and middle/class, so tried to tear down some of your points. I think they were surprised by your education and knowledge and are now like a dog with a bone. One thought they had a crystal ball with a PHD in psychology whereas because you had given a bit of detail they were able to piece one or two things together and string them with sneery, classism to throw at anyone who supports M&H. However most people in the UK who are rooted in another culture see very well the class differences because it is so evident.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 30/10/2022 06:58

No you don't. If there are any people that do not rather believe anyone "appointed by God" in this day and age are CoE followers.

But isn't it the RF who believe this and pass this down to the heir/ King / head of CofE . Even if the general public don't .

Autocrat it is. In one of my earlier posts, religion became region but that wasn't a stick to beat with me😀

This is such a thoughtful post thank you. When I lived in London, it was not unusual for people I met to do a visible double take when the subject of schools and unis came round.

I used to meet students in my college who would say, with great surprise, 'Your English is very good". I remember thinking, "Hang on, we are in the same college, we are presumably all here on merit, studying in English, why are you so surprised?"

I started to respond by saying: "Thank you, your English is very good too."

That did the trick😁

It would have been quite funny to respond by saying "Thank you. Would you like some help with yours?"

Oh I remember this one very well. Nowadays in similar situations some people look perplexed but don't know how to say what they are thinking.

Anyway I am enjoying reading your posts and am just about to head to Twitter to look into the polls you linked to.

Well hopefully not!

On the education point, I am also a minority and I didn't go to Oxbridge. Off topic but question was genuine, because Oxbridge is a privileged environment and she/he may have had experiences that shaped thinking about what we are discussing too. I don't understand how some posters think you are questioning someone's education because you ask. Just looking for an opportunity to stir it. But have seen it before so alright with it 👍

Coronateachingagain · 30/10/2022 08:12

But still, I find the OP's comments about the CoE generally a bit off and strange. For another thread!

@PreparationPreparationPrep do read RS Locke on Twitter. She is brilliant. She wrote the viral piece about Meghan, race and the UK class system that James O'Brien loved and read out on LBC some time ago:

"Imagine a society founded on a class structure with the (white) British royal family at the top as determined by birth and by blood. A biracial woman enters the top of the pyramid by marriage, negating both the birth and blood requirements society had previously been told were preconditions. Because she lacks those prerequisites, she’s considered unworthy. Because she’s proud of her own heritage and regards herself as equal to others at the top of the pyramid, she’s considered ungrateful."

Coronateachingagain · 30/10/2022 08:25

You are focusing on race as the main or only reason for her troubles 😅. You are either delusional or have an agenda. She is a social and financial climber - no matter which race - good luck to her but call things by its name too.

Ohnonevermind · 30/10/2022 08:30

I do find all this ‘phenomenon’ accolade interesting. Will it sell in the amounts required to make it a ‘phenomenon’ ? I seriously doubt it. Will it change the course of publishing, of course not.

will they buy lots of awards to promote it, probably.

if the reason why it is being described as a phenomenon is due to the fact that it is being released in lots or countries in lots of languages at the same time, then the publishing industry is about 20 years behind the rest of the world. That’s nothing to be proud of really
