If you were a royal, but not likely to inherit the crown...

...what would you do and which current member of the royal family is your closest role model?

I think I'd like to be a working royal along the lines of Katherine, Duchess of Kent or Sophie, Countess of Wessex. I'd probably want to champion the less celebrated public sector such as education, social care, health etc.

The non-working royal model is tempting, but I don't mind a bit of pomp and ceremony and the risk of scandal is a bit high. In for a penny, in for a pound I reckon if you're a royal.

There's plenty of people I'd like to spend an hour or two with but none of them!

I’ll mildly point out that we only think we know what anyone is like really.

I don’t want to be any of the Royals, ugh, it would be awful! I’d choose a role as a Private Secretary, thanks. Or the Wales’ new CEO. Much more my cup of tea.

I’m sorry your ex and his new partner did that to you, @thelionthewitchtheaudacityofTHISbitch . There’s all sorts of DV and as a society we seem to be only waking up to it now, and calling it out for what it is. And even then so much of it is still not recognised as the violence it actually is.

I'd like to work for the nhs or in a state school but not take the money. It would be lovely to have loads of family money and be able to afford the training to be a midwife or something but not need the salary and so be able to contribute positively to the nation, since I'd be enjoying a position where f privilege in other aspects of my life.
The RF would be much better if William or Kate had gone into public sector work.

That’s what William did, isn’t it, as a helicopter pilot etc. public service and took no salary

William, Charles, Harry, and probably Andrew and are the same in this. They had to be paid apparently, so it gets redirected to charities At least that is what I’ve read.

I don’t think I’d do a Harry. The life he’s chosen costs an awful lot to fund.
I think I’d rather step back, have a normalish job in an area I was interested in and live on some nice royal estate in peace. Just show my face for the big stuff.

Same.

I'd have days like Princess Margaret's, waking when I wanted, servants attending to me, drawing my bath and then just literally drinking and eating the best food and drink for the day!

Me too. Sod working in the public sector. I do that now. I think I'd like to be a minor Windsor, and I'd do a non job just for the sake of it like Bea and Eugenie. I'd go in a fuckload of holidays.

HairyToity · 17/11/2023 14:01

I'd keep completely out of it. No balcony appearances or Hello spreads. I'd earn my own money (not off the back of royal connections) and be completely forgotten about.

I would lobby like anything for a grace and favour apartment in Kensington Palace or St James' Palace, and having achieved that I would get a proper job that paid that was probably less than I could actually achieve if i really worked hard but nevertheless paid at least some of my bills so could pretend I was independent. So I guess I would be like Beatrice and Eugenie but with a proper job in an office rather than art galleries or wherever it is they worked.
