Harry and Meghan doing alright in the US, continuing their universal service

Have heard a few comments from panellists and commenters thinking that Harry somehow wants to come back to the UK?

I highly doubt this. I think they are doing more than ok in the US.

A pity a positive thread has been deleted regarding the podcasts, maybe the positive conversation can continue here?

In particularly I wanted to highlight the announcement that they will be recipients for the Robert J Kennedy Human Rights award.

“When The Duke and Duchess accepted our award laureate invitation back in March, we were thrilled. The couple has always stood out for their willingness to speak up and change the narrative on racial justice and mental health around the world,” Kerry Kennedy, president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights, and Robert F. Kennedy's daughter, said in a statement shared today. “They embody the type of moral courage that my father once called the ‘one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change.’”

Thank you, Tantrum. I'd never heard of this charity before so I was curious what it did. Generous salaries I can live with if you can see how they're benefiting society and how much they invest in that. But this felt...empty.
I think they should be investigated - but less for their salaries and more for how the organisation is charitable.

MarshaMelrose · 13/10/2022 22:45

I'm glad you're with me on this, Puzzled. Because it would be nice if everyone questioned the charity and that can't happen if people think by doing that, Meghan is being criticised. 🙂

As with so many of these issues I find it entirely possible to question things regardless of personalities, but haven't the least doubt that some will insist it's only being done because of Meghan's involvement

Luckily, though, the sheer illogicality of this position makes it easy to ignore

The RFK Human Rights Organisation has deleted their Instagram post about Harry and Meghan winning their 2022 Award.

Apparently it received an overwhelming amount of posts expression disappointment, puzzlement and anger about why Meghan and Harry had won.

EXPRESSING not expressing

Lol that's made my Friday! Hopefully they'll start considering truly deserved people who dedicate their lives, without an alternative agenda, to good causes

To anyone that’s interested in mental health, I listened to new the Archetypes podcast last night - the mental health one - its definitely worth a listen

I've finally finished listening to this one - this one was really heavy and I'll need to sit with it for a bit. I'll be able to be more critical later - I have some thoughts but am still quite affected from what her interviewees shared.

I however feel that the poem Meghan read was beautiful - goodness!

breathe by Becky Hemsley

She sat at the back and they said she was shy,
She led from the front and they hated her pride,
They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance,
They branded her loud, then were shocked by her silence,
When she shared no ambition they said it was sad,
So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad,
They told her they’d listen, then covered their ears,
And gave her a hug while they laughed at her fears,
And she listened to all of it thinking she should,
Be the girl they told her to be best as she could,
But one day she asked what was best for herself,
Instead of trying to please everyone else,
So she walked to the forest and stood with the trees,
She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves,
She spoke to the willow, the elm and the pine,
And she told them what she’d been told time after time,
She told them she felt she was never enough,
She was either too little or far far too much,
Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak,
Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek,
Then she found a small clearing surrounded by firs
,And she stopped…and she heard what the trees said to her,
And she sat there for hours not wanting to leave,
For the forest said nothing, it just let her breathe

Wow - thank you for sharing that Skullbabe.

Really resonates

Doing pro Meghan and Harry threads are so bizarre. If they are doing so well you do not need to make this effort to show them in a positive light.

😅 .... there is a typo OP - should read "universal self service"

Here is a link to the latest podcast

And a link to the transcript: (which is not perfect and can be a bit confusing)

I tried to open the transcript but it didn’t work.

Does anyone know what is going on with Travelyst and Better Up? They are never mentioned these days.

It works for me still but I am in the US. It's easy to find on spotify.

HannaHanna · 14/10/2022 15:43

Never mentioned where?

In the media. A lot of attention is being given to the podcasts Meghan is doing and on their award etc, but no mention of Harrys endeavours apart from Invictus.

ThighMistress · 14/10/2022 16:44

I suppose we can’t really blame H&M for accepting awards. They are flattered and eager for publicity and conducting proper due diligence is often an afterthought. Likewise with charity involvement.

Another thread, but it does seem unfortunately that many charities are mismanaged or simply social vehicles, eg hosting a charity ball and net profits after huge costs 25p. This is of course much worse in the US where rules regarding charities’ financial affairs are much more “generous” than those in the UK.

MarshaMelrose · 14/10/2022 16:46

The last thing I heard about Travelyst was a campaign in New Zealand encouraging travellers to think about sustainability. I think they're just studying attitudes at first so they'll use the campaign to gather feedback.
It's difficult to see how these big businesses that are in the partnership will offer sustainable options at competitive prices but I guess that's the info they'll be looking at - the price at which people turn away from sustainability and what people will expect, or put up with, to help the environment and how price changes that.

HannaHanna · 14/10/2022 16:50

Not sure as I wouldn't ever see this kind of coverage (about any of those topics) without specifically looking. It's not something on my radar, generally.

I can find a little bit about Travelyst by searching for it, and more about Betterup. I didn't even know George Clooney had a foundation until it was mentioned here on RF recently. I don't think I have ever seen coverage of it, but just found some by searching for that, too. I think the same goes for most charities.

Can you elaborate on protections in place in the UK beyond the US?

Charities in the US are regulated both federally and at the state level. I will just say I have a bit of experience and insider knowledge here.

HannaHanna · 14/10/2022 16:57

Wild to hear that the foundation was hounded so badly on twitter that they removed their tweets. I can't even be bothered to post a review when I have a bad or good experience with a restaurant.

I wanted to propose a specific forum for discussing the topics in the podcasts, but it's a small site and I know the owner could not manage it if those same people started bombarding the forum.

EchoPark · 14/10/2022 20:12

That poem Meghan read out is sweet but basic.

It's college girl level feminism.

Nothing that a woman over 40 who's been out in the world a bit hasn't known for over a decade.

EchoPark · 14/10/2022 20:19

"Wild to hear that the foundation was hounded so badly on twitter that they removed their tweets."

Hanna you didn't hear that because I didn't say hounded and I didn't say twitter.

It was an Instagram post and the comments were not hounding, they were respectful and questioning. From followers of RFK Human Rights.

"I can't even be bothered to post a review when I have a bad or good experience with a restaurant."

Well done at being so chill, but a restaurant meal and a Human Rights organisation are not comparable.

It’s all obviously meant to refer to herself as well. How unusual.

Ooo, then you are just the person, Hanna. I have searched this but can't find an answer. Companies set up in Delaware because of the advantages the state offers in privacy over the formation and running of the company, amongst other reasons. (Some other states are similar.)
Non-profit set ups also have some similar advantages but they are subject to scrutiny by the equivalent of our Charity Commission.
My question is, charities in the UK have to publish full accounts publically. Is that the same in the US? On all the states? So do non-profits set up in Delaware have to publish their full accounts for public scrutiny? Or can they just be submitted to whoever regulates charities in the US (the IRS?) and not be made available to the public?
Thanks, Hanna.
