I think William should have learned Welsh?

William is the new Prince of Wales. He has known for years he will be, but still only knows a few Welsh words.
Charles learned to speak Welsh and can have conversations with people and has given many speeches in Welsh.
I don't understand why William has not done the preparation his father did for this role?

It is less than 3 hours a week for a year.
But lets be generous and say he needs 6 hours a week for a year. So one hour lesson every day - tutor coming to him, so zero travelling time.
Trust me he could squeeze that easily into his schedule.

err. You might want to check your maths.
3 hrs a week for a year is only 150 hours. You would need 7 years at that rate to get to 1040 hours.

I love how others can account for someone else’s time.

And can show a such stunning command of arithmetic.

😂😂

OP, With the lack of factual basis to your snooty arguments, you’re the thread gift that keeps on giving.

Pro tip: if you’re going to be dismissive of someone, do try and double-check that you’re correct. Unless you want to look a berk.

TheTantrumoftheToddlerIsThere · 08/10/2022 17:03

@antelopevalley can you show your workings out for that so we can see how you got to that assumption?

I think you have made a mistake somewhere along the line.

RandomPenguinHouse · 08/10/2022 17:05

Kate Middleton got an A in A Level Maths so I’m sure she could help you out @antelopevalley if you need it Wink

Newnamefor2021 · 08/10/2022 17:08

He's never going to please everyone.

I'm Welsh, can't speak it. William has more Welsh than me.

I'm no royalist, I suppose they are good for tourism but other than that I am not particularly supportive of them.

However it seems to me he is making a effort, given he isn't Welsh, I think he does make an attempt to support welsh Language and culture.

If the argument is if there were should be a Welsh prince then that's a worthwhile argument but OP agrees he is learning Welsh but that's still not good enough apparently.

Oops true!

Here you go. Dumbarton Castle.

Are people seriously saying William should learn Welsh? Even if they feel strongly about it surely it’s all just chit chatting- nobody cares about any of this do they?
I’m hoping none of the people who post here take any of this very seriously or any posts and their responses as facts.

It gets very serious on these threads about Royals.

There’s no need to drive people away from threads if they don’t agree with you or to call people names for that matter. Why can’t people post their opinions - you don’t all have to agree.

Even if it’s felt that the OP doesn’t like the Royals - many people don’t like some royals and prefer others - Why does it matter? I don’t see what the big deal is. You all have your preferences - why can’t you co-exist on this forum?

feellikeanalien · 08/10/2022 17:45

Sorry. That was a bit random and will teach me to read the full thread before posting!😊

Of course everyone can coexist, that’s clearly happening, lol.

I’m worried about you, you seem to be taking your concern for what other posters are posting too seriously. You’re the one who seems the most stressed. Maybe concentrate on yourself and your own posts pet, and have a break from MN for a bit.

Coucous · 08/10/2022 18:25

Honestly don’t worry about me at all. I’m not on MN all day everyday posting nasty drivel about people I don’t know. I’m a keen observer though - I try not do get involved with other posters when it gets too hostile. I just don’t have the energy for it.
I can imagine it’s quite exhausting!
Don’t drive me away I do come back when I’m not busy.

TrashyPanda · 08/10/2022 18:43

You have to realise too the entire time she was a girl women weren’t even allowed to get a degree from University

that’s simply not true

1893 saw the first graduation of female students at Edinburgh University

The Universities (Scotland) Act 1889 led to the drawing up of Regulations for the Graduation of Women and for their instruction in Scottish universities

No one is driving you away @Coucous don’t be paranoid!

You’re an independent kick ass woman and you’re powerful enough to bravely be in charge of your own posting destiny Smile

jtaeapa · 08/10/2022 19:19

How can anyone think it’s more valuable for him to learn Welsh than spend time with his dc? Weird.

ImAvingOops · 08/10/2022 19:40

The two things aren't mutually exclusive - my mum managed to learn Welsh and spend time with her kids too!

Kellie45 · 08/10/2022 20:43

Frankly just how much more valuable will William be to Wales if he learns Welsh? He will never be a Welsh speaker because he simply won’t be able to practice it enough. You only get flow into the language if you have enough people around you who speak it so that you practice it daily.

Coucous · 08/10/2022 22:38

If they move to Wales @Kellie45 The children and Kate could also learn. They would practice it more. It would bring tourism to Wales.

Never going to happen though with him being the next in line to the throne though.

They had their time living in Wales; imo him living and working there (not part-time @antelopevalley as far as we know) for 3 years. I think that probably gives him sone cred.

IMO, him learning Welsh seems very much for the sake of it and rather pointless.

Coucous · 08/10/2022 23:54

I don't see it happening as it's a far cry from their life near London. It would be nice for the country - I think.

RandomPenguinHouse · 09/10/2022 00:03

lol at Windsor being near London Grin But yes they need to be near where the royal business goes down.

I think we all know that these titles are near-as-dammit in name only, at least these days.

I mean, Wessex doesn’t even exist and it has an Earl.

(I do appreciate the Prince of Wales title is a more serious matter though.)

donquixotedelamancha · 09/10/2022 00:26

Eh? It's right next to London isn't it?

Yes.

Windsor is a town on the River Thames in southeast England, just west of London

Says Google.

RandomPenguinHouse · 09/10/2022 01:00

Apologies, I am very London-centric Blush

It is next to Greater London yes. It feels long away from proper London to me, in which I include Richmond and Kingston.

It was just the way it was worded as their life near London that I found amusing, I should have made that clearer. I don’t know anyone who lives in Windsor and ‘pops’ into London or vice versa.

clyspa · 09/10/2022 03:49

he could speak Welsh and walk round wrapped in the Welsh flag and antelope and couscous would find something to complain about that.

You don't like them. That's fine,l . But don't get shitty when people don't agree and provide rationalised reasons why.
