The royal family

I think William should have learned Welsh?

William is the new Prince of Wales. He has known for years he will be, but still only knows a few Welsh words.
Charles learned to speak Welsh and can have conversations with people and has given many speeches in Welsh.
I don't understand why William has not done the preparation his father did for this role?

But I guess you don't need to do much to impress the locals when you've invaded and taken away their land already

I have actually - she was head of state of South Africa for about 10 years - that's plenty of time to learn a language when you don't work.

The queen didn't work in her first 10 years on the throne? She sat around all day painting her nails?

Is this a wind up?

And which South African language do you propose she studied? Zulu? Xhosa? Afrikaans? Or English?

Also this Welsh not thing. Yes, on one hand kids were told not to speak Welsh in class but equally the teachers were also saying if you want to achieve, be the best, compete in England (which my generation did because there were no jobs in Wales) you have to speak English like the English. I don’t have an accent because of this. It’s been good advice in my opinion.

The welsh not was not teachers advising kids to work in England?! It was punishing children for speaking their mother tongue by humiliating them.

its not relevant to Prince William, who I wouldn’t at all expect to be fluent in welsh given that he’s English. It’s a nice gesture to learn some phrases and basic welsh though as Prince of the country.

also in response to a pp, I’d actually love to see him do a clog dance or a bit of cerdd dant 😂

QE had the classic Victorian style education for royal girls. This meant tutored at home by governesses in appropriately feminine subjects and taught how to manage servants and etiquette for state banquets and foreign state visits abroad and such like.

She was never allowed to go to a proper school and get a formal education, the only time she did was to Eton for one on one tutoring in the Constitution when her father became King and it was clear she would be Queen on day.

The Victorian education for girls is very sexist. And yes, French was the language to learn and absolutely necessary to be fluent in it.

As an adult once she was Queen she realised she’d been ill prepared and self-educated from there by doing tons of reading and hiring tutors from universities in different relevant subjects to complete courses. You have to realise too the entire time she was a girl women weren’t even allowed to get a degree from University. As a teen, women could then go to Uni, but all they got were “certificates” not degrees like the men.

The rules and expectations for her generation changed as she grew up and matured, and they kept changing for all later generations of women.

She changed that for her daughter. Princess Anne was the first female British royal to attend a school.

You mean the Dutch locals of S. Africa?

Any - there are more than 10 official languages - just any of them would be fine. Even Jamaican Patois would suffice - she would have had more than 50 years to learn that.

Yeah, all that time he was fannying about flying an air ambulance around the place, when he could have been using the time to learn Welsh instead. Honestly.

Confused

He did that part-time. Very part-time at times.

I'm not convinced that being unable to speak the language of your nation because it was almost driven to extinction by successive policies of what was originally an occupying force and who have been determined to enforce their rule by ethnocide is a good enough reason to give for you not speaking your own language, or for a majority of people to not speak their own language. There are 10 remaining indigenous languages in the UK, and they should be cherished. They are part of a rich heritage. And if William wants to be a prince of that nation it is only courteous and polite to be able to converse in the language. It's not as though he had no notice that he'd likely be in this position some day.

😂😂

What’s so funny? S. Africa was invaded and colonised by the Dutch United East India Company in 1652. The Dutch then “gave” S. Africa to the British in 1814 per the Anglo-Dutch treaty as a result of being losers in the Napoleonic Wars…which were wars Britain did not start.

So, really QE’s ancestors and British ancestors didn’t invade and take the land from the real locals of S. Africa.

That would be great @KirstenBlest - the entire family could learn. A good opportunity for him and the children to move to Wales for a few years.

William and Kate lived in Wales for three years while he was in the RAF search and rescue helicopter service.
Charles lived in Wales for 10 weeks.

Collective daily worship and the bit of geography about ox bow lakes, the superheroes topic my son did 3 times, and some of the made up grammar they do in year 6.

I mean I can think of better replacements than a minor language they’ll never need. First aid, home economics, money management…

He was working part-time as well so could easily have learned Welsh then.

He wasn’t working part time then. He worked 9.5hr shifts on a roster the same as everyone else on his team. It’s why he didn’t do any royal duties and could live in Norfolk while he was in RAF air ambulance.

ArcaneWireless · 07/10/2022 23:58

Can I fly a helicopter? No.

Can. I have a family? No.

Can I speak Welsh? No.

I think I would have to be able to make a fairly good fist of those things before I criticised someone else for their efforts.

He was working part time for the RAF in Anglesey? Where’s your evidence for that please. I couldn’t find any on a quick search.

loottie · 07/10/2022 23:59

I have a feeling he isn't the brightest?
(Thought I remember him doing badly at school; considering all the access to good educators he has).

I would be really shit at learning languages too, the RF should have started him learning very young, it's jog like he didn't know this job was coming (from god Grin) after all!

Why do you constantly start these threads. So. weird.

DumpedByText · 08/10/2022 00:01

Oh please, King Charles cannot speak Welsh. Anyone can practice some Welsh phrases and make them sound good, this doesn't mean you can speak Welsh! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I think you must be misremembering and maybe thinking of Prince Harry @loottie
I’m not sure if William is very bright but he got good A Level grades for the time IIRC.

Harry on the other hand did not and apparently struggled at school.

I’m pretty sure I saw this exact thread posted when the queen died, was that one started by you as well OP as the wording was very similar. I don’t really care tbh I wish they would stop with this BS after the queen died tbh. I liked the queen and have a lot of respect for her but the rest seem like lazy spoilt brats.

African land has never belonged to any coloniser. Dutch or otherwise - unless it was paid for then it's stolen. Hence ongoing conflict in these regions. Majority of SA who are actually the rightful owners of the land, are not Dutch/ Afrikaaners. If we want to be specific yes there are more than 10 official SA languages which now include Afrikaans and English post colonisation.

Although I am not sure why she would want to learn the language when Britain had concentration camps in SA killing thousands of Boers (and Black South African) families during Britain's violent colonial history. People don't usually learn the languages of those they oppress . . .

I wont reply to this anymore - it's a discussion for another thread not this - I don't want to derail the thread further. I think my light hearted comments about her / any members of the RF learning the languages of their African subjects are enough. Not meant to ruffle any feathers.

3 years and couldn't learn Welsh? Did they live there or had a house there and lived in England most of the time?

Two-second search. Working 20 hours a week.
