The last thread filled up during a particularly chatty morning.

That interview is interesting!

Are Beatrice and Eugenie in the same position as H & M? As in Are they non working royals who get no funding, no security and travel etc? Do they have to fund themselves?

I know H&M have suggested some people got the in &out version they wanted but I'm not sure who that would be.

No Senior Working Royals have the in/ out arrangement that H and M wanted . They never specified who did . Just as they never specified who in the family made a racist comment nor which reporter used the n word .
Both very good at lobbing accusations without back up .

@oakleaffy - Ms does not mean divorced! I've always been Ms, married or single because I do not wish to be titled according to my relationship to a man.

I was told Ms was for divorced women when I was a child. And the association lingers for some! The argument I got into the person in the post office who tried to refuse to sign off my baby daughter’s passport application as I had ticked Ms for her. I go by Ms most the time myself now as I’m started to resent Mrs and it’s historical connotations.

Redfrangipani · 02/10/2022 13:13

I agree @Maireas

And as of just recently I’m now choosing to go without any gendered title.

Off topic: Can I ask what you use? Do you use Mx (I saw that the other day) or something else or nothing at all.? I would be interested for me and especially for our kids.

Pet insurance?! Crazy.
Our standing as women is allied to our status with men.
Men that say Ms means divorced are being deliberately anti feminist, imo

In my experience it is not just men… see my earlier post about person in post office that was a woman. Unconscious, internalised misogyny is hard for people to spot in themselves IMO. My sibling said she liked that people knew she was married because she was Mrs. I said if she felt it was valuable for even random strangers to know then she’s welcome to tell them but I didn’t think her husband felt disadvantaged having by sharing Mr with unmarried men.

SilverLiningPlaybook · 02/10/2022 18:04

‘My Missus’ is my pet hate.

LaMarschallin · 02/10/2022 18:27

There was a puzzle going around when I was a child:

"A father and son have a car accident and are both badly hurt. They are both taken to separate hospitals. When the boy is taken in for an operation, the surgeon (doctor) says 'I can not do the surgery because this is my son'. How is this possible?"

Tricky, isn't it? Hmm

LaMarschallin · 02/10/2022 18:29

Sorry, I copied and pasted.
The "doctor" in brackets bit was intended to explain either to children or to someone learning EAFL.

Surgeon is a woman

I am enjoying the new camaraderie on this thread (while it lasts). It is so much nicer than constantly defending one's position against repeat nonsense accusations. 😊

Surgeon is a woman

Well, yes. Obviously.
It was just my small contribution to the internalised misogyny discussion.
The answer nowadays should be obvious and it seems mad to me now that it used to be seen as quite the head-scratcher.

Indeed! I agree.

Serenster · 02/10/2022 18:46

I was delighted when my oldest son, who only ever visited the women GPs at our local surgery once announced matter of factly to a relative suggesting he might want to be a doctor when he grew up: “I can’t though - only ladies are doctors”. 😀😀

(Ms. here, and never changed my name when we got married)

Maireas · 02/10/2022 18:48

You raised him well, @Serenster!

Just seeing on Twitter that OW has released an info video 🙄 on the new titles and who is now what. The video says that A & L are now titled Prince and Princess. A reply has said that the Prince and Princess titles are not automatic as previously believed, because the children were not born grandchildren to a monarch as KC was not King then, they were born great grandchildren to the monarch and the letters patent does not cover this. Eugenie and Beatrice got theirs automatically because they were born grandchildren to the reigning monarch.

Can anyone who has more knowledge around these matters clarify this for me?

OW has no more clue than you or I. Probably much less.

You might be better posting this in one of the two threads currently running about titles.

Croque · 02/10/2022 19:37

Charming. Oprah and Wendy do act as public mouthpieces for M so she would have conveyed this. Now that Sunshine has receded from her life, there are going to be a lot of goady leaks here and there. I recall that Wendy provided an update about the feud as soon as they touched down in LA.

MarshaMelrose · 02/10/2022 20:03

Wendy who?

Showing my age as I remember this as well.

Side note - I love The Delauney. There beef stroganoff is to die for.

I've seen this argument too but I don't see how it stands up given that several of George V's grandchildren who were born after his death (Princess Alexandra, Prince Michael, Prince William, Prince Richard) were automatically given HRH + Prince/Princess without the need for any further letters patent. I'm pretty confident this is a red herring.

Thesummeriwas16 · 02/10/2022 20:42

I really hope the children don't get titles - they're not part of the royal family now especially with all the unpleasantness coming from their parents.

Ohnonevermind · 02/10/2022 20:43

Is that a joke Oprah video, it doesn’t seem real and I see Omid hasn’t shared it yet (It’s pitched at a titles for dummies level ?)

CathyorClaire · 02/10/2022 20:45

It’s unworkable otherwise though, due the various things that the monarch holds for the state because of their position.

It's entirely workable in that it relates solely to private assets passed from monarch to monarch.

It dates back only to 1993 in an agreement with the Major government with the aim of preserving royal wealth intact and with it a degree of financial independence:

www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/why-king-charles-will-pay-zero-inheritance-tax-on-the-queen-s-private-fortune/ar-AA11JQAj

HMQ saved an estimated £20m when she inherited from her mother. More than enough to pay off the extravagent debts accrued and keep a substantial amount in spare change.

Croque · 02/10/2022 20:14

Doh, @Croque! I've been searching out Wendy Williams. She's the only American Wendy I know. 😆
I'm off to search out Gayle King's comments now!
