The royal family

Charles and that “bloody” pen

The clip of Charles with the leaking pen is an interesting insight into how the royals behave and how they are treated by their seemingly very obsequious staff. Is Charles’ behaviour reasonable or do you think he’s kicking up an unnecessary fuss? Interested to hear other people’s perspectives really because I’ve never seen a clip like this before.

It is my observation that those who profess to be royalists are the people who make the nastiest, most personal comments directed towards the Royal family. I am a republican and I would not speak of my worst enemy the way some of you royalists speak of this family you love so much.

Totally agree with this. No one is forcing the role on him. It’s not obligatory to be king. He could just let William take over but his ego is way too fragile to allow that.

It’s not even that easy. Edward VIii was pretty much ostracised for his whole life for abdicating.

Quartz2208 · 14/09/2022 08:13

To be fair he was clearly angry with the pen - regardless of whether you like him or not he is human - and a 73 year old one at that. His reaction with the pen is perfectly normal and one which I suspect we have all had at times (although it tends to lead me to cry!)

The Queen was an exception I think able to control her emotions but it could at times (particularly in the 80s/90s) come across as cold.

His Great Grandfather is now seen as being incredibly angry and his Grandfather also had outbursts.

He is likely to be grieving and in both emotional and physical pain (the physical toil myst be coming)

That was a whole different scenario though.

I think if Charles really wanted to abdicate and William was willing then they could easily spin it. My wonderful son is ideally placed, I will be his right hand man blah blah.

So I don't think it's fear of being ostracised that stops him. I think he wants to be king. Even so, this period must be incredibly stressful for him.

OvaHere · 14/09/2022 08:42

I've come to the conclusion that this extended period of intensive activity all conducted under the glare of cameras is too much. I'm exhausted when I have to do one or two days travelling for work and I'm only in my late 40s.

I think we should learn from this and not put William and Harry through quite the same thing when Charles goes. I think it's too much for the country as well. Almost a week in we are all getting tetchy from the 24hr grief fest too and the over exposure isn't proving great for their popularity. Less is more as they say!

An overarching official period of mourning is fine but the airwaves don't need to be filled with something 24/7. Last time we did this was in the 50s where only a small amount of things were filmed and broadcast. I'm going to assume the pressure for everyone, us included, was lesser.

Nekomata · 14/09/2022 08:57

I imagine there is a ton of stuff going on in the background. They are trying to organize one of the biggest funerals ever with foreign dignitaries coming in from over the world. There are probably a million decisions needed to be made about the royal changeover. I’m sure the whole family is exhausted. Every little detail will be scrutinized. It all has to be perfect.

JustLyra · 14/09/2022 09:09

Given how strict and persnickety the Queen was about table settings for royal events I think she’d have been equally pissed off that for one of the biggest and most important events for years - one that had been rehearsed many times - someone had put out a table that was too small.

That should never have happened.

JustLyra · 14/09/2022 09:09

*and unchecked pens/ink wells wrong way round

Holly60 · 14/09/2022 09:12

I think he is keeping up his end of the bargain and making sure he is doing everything expected of him, he should be able to reply on the person whose job it was to check the pen!

I think I'd have been fed up too

Branster · 14/09/2022 09:19

Why can't they just make sure there's a proper working pen at such occasions. It really isn't difficult. There are plenty of administrative staff around who should have taken care of this.
I'd be annoyed too.
And the faffing around with the ink pots at St James's palace - who put the bloody things there, in the way and on a tiny desk. Ridiculous.

Hear hear. I am a staunch republican, I find the monarchy repugnant. I will happily eviscerate Charles for his mistreatment of his staff, his failure to protect his sons and his friendships with known criminals and abusers.

Even I can raise a bit of compassion for him in this situation, ffs. It's brutal.

PollyPolo · 14/09/2022 09:31

I can't believe people are going on about this pen. I have said much worse in a moment of frustration without the stress and exhaustion he must be facing right now.

This morning I used some choice words when my washing machine decided to break. Doesn't mean I have temper issues. It's just annoying.

LimboLass · 14/09/2022 09:38

He was more calm than I would have been. Fucking pens hate me either not working or pissing ink all over the shop.

Exactly. I found my daughter's new school jumper covered in leaky pen after just two days. I was not happy, another £30.00 down the drain as it won't come off.

742386w · 14/09/2022 09:53

He’s obviously tired and emotional. Understandable and very relatable. Not too much to ask for someone to supply a decent pen.

Camilla’s is quiet and calm reaction was lovely.

BakeOffRewatch · 14/09/2022 09:55

I’ve just watched the video and what I saw doesn’t match the commentary on it - he was frustrated and had a rant about the pen, like any colleague would amongst close team members and the people around him helped him, Camilla carried on. I didn’t see anything that would be insight into royal behaviours being different from us. The headlines and screenshots with cap make it look like he’s shouting at people or bullying, but he’s not in the video. Agree it wasn’t necessary to have an outburst, when is it ever. But I’m not judging him as having explosive behaviour or pattern of poor behaviour towards staff based on this video.

The poor man has just lost his mother and has had no time to grieve, having to make public appearance after public appearance during one of the saddest times of his life.

He must be exhausted, stressed and heartbroken.

Arbesque · 14/09/2022 10:09

ChagSameachDoreen · 14/09/2022 06:40

What exactly has he done that's so stressful? A couple of speeches? He's been preparing for this moment most of his life. His very elderly mother has passed after a long and full life. It isn't a tragedy. He needs to stop being a dick.

My mother died last year after a full and long life. I was and still am heartbroken.

pistachi0nuts · 14/09/2022 10:10

This is the second example now where he has shown his true colours. Total disgust for his 'staff'. Sort your own bloody pen out you petulant man child. Yes he is grieving but that doesn't excuse a complete lack of basic manners.

Robin233 · 14/09/2022 10:20

Poor bloke.
He's had his mum for 73 years.
Probably spoke to her daily.
Lost his father relatively recently.
I can remember my own 54 year old father 'crying' at his mums funeral she was 89.
I can't imagine what grieve he's going through.
Getting ink all over your hands is awful - a right pig to get off.
As pp said he should be home in comfort looking through old photos with loved ones.

It excuses him momentarily losing it over something relatively trivial. That is often how grief works. You cope with the big things, but something small sets you off. And he wasn't rude, just exhausted and grumpy.

Pinkpeony2 · 14/09/2022 10:22

He said it happens every time. So it’s happened before then. Why on Earth can’t someone provide him with a non leaky pen?
He is signing something incredibly historically important and then shaking hands all over the place. A decent pen is pretty paramount.
He is stressed and just lost his mother. The moment he will have been thinking about and anticipating and preparing for, for his whole life has finally come and it must be overwhelming. It’s all been such a whirlwind and he doesn’t even remember the date to sign. Come on, he’s only human. I would have been tempted to lob the pen across the room I think!

turningpurpleygreen · 14/09/2022 10:24

It's just such a non event

Why is everyone so fascinated? Man needs oen. Pen leaks

The end

No need for endless discussion

Novella4 · 14/09/2022 10:24

Here's a clue for you:
It's his manner

reducedtimetable · 14/09/2022 10:26

He’s just lost his mum and he’s getting irritated at a pen and an ink pot. I can see why and it’s understandable

Unlike my MIL. When she lost her mum a few months back she directed all her anger at me. No idea why I was chosen but she did and was so hateful we haven’t seen or spoken to her since as she lost the plot completely so someone swearing a bit about a pen seems like nothing in the grand scheme of things !
