Republicans are getting arrested

I find it ridiculous that the media mocks North Korea for forcing its citizens to mourn their leaders death, yet we are being made to do the same.

To top it off, there have been numerous arrests of people protesting the monarchy - which is perfectly within their right to do so, especially if you believe in democracy and only having elected leaders.

amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/sep/12/republican-britain-why-are-people-getting-arrested

I liked and respected the Queen, but don't like the rest of the royal family and find the idea that they have the "divine" right to rule frankly ridiculous in this day and age. What is Britain becoming when people don't have the free speech to protest about it?!

OP posts:

Read the article. They weren't protesting at memorials (which I agree would justify arrest), they were protesting protesting proclamations, which are political events announcing the new head of state.

Saying the police are right to arrest people for lawful behaviour is a really bad idea”

not so. Andrew was following his mother’s coffin. How would you like it if someone yelled their negative opinion at you as you were doing the same? Would that be fair to your siblings?
time and place. That wasn’t it.

Im, indifferent to the monarchy, think Andrew is a nasty piece of work as a human being but yelling at someone as they’re following their mother’s coffin is despicable.

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 06:25

If it's "too soon" to talk about constitutional reform, when is it going to be time?
Threatened with arrest for a piece of paper because it might upset someone.

The hecklers are being removed because it’s likely to incite far more trouble, as many people are there to pay their respects. They have the rest of Charles reign to heckle him the rest of Andrews life to heckle him. The can protest next tuesday.

My examples I have posted links to, are not heckling.

No words are said.

A blank piece of paper and someone is stopped and questioned by the Police (see the footage)

And a woman not in a crowd or watching a procession with a sign saying 'Not My King' is frogmarched off.

It's so easy to call them hecklers. They are not.

They were just examples.

No one needs anything kicking off there. it’s already a difficult situation, with lots of potential problems.

I also mentioned protesting. She was protesting. At no point did I say they were all hecklers.

Andrew shouldn't have been there.

My examples are not the heckler shouting at Andrew.

Bretonbear · 13/09/2022 06:31

The whole thing is just a circus. Absolutely ridiculous. All I can think of is all those who have lost loved ones this week who are grieving but at the same time unable to escape the performance grieving that is everywhere they look. It's all very very odd.

Andrews a cunt. But people are often let out of prison to take part in funeral traditions.

My uncle was let out of prison for the wake (the night before) and funeral of my Nana.

and as shit as it is, he hasn’t been convicted of anything.

RememberWhatMatters · 13/09/2022 06:42

I think yesterday's heckling incident was a real shame and must have been very upsetting for the family. That could have been avoided had Andrew stayed in London. These are all ceremonies and customs, the funeral is on the 19th which he will of course attend. There is no need for him to join in with everything else, in public, when the reality is that this will happen. His actions have consequences and they should be his alone.

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 13/09/2022 06:44

I absolutely agree OP. This, coupled with arrests of people on twitter for 'wrongthink', is very worrying. We are not a police state. Freedom of speech is vitally important for democracy, but judging by comments here, it is not valued as much as it should be.

Bretonbear · 13/09/2022 06:59

Freedom of speech is alive and well as long as its the right type of speech.

“Andrew shouldn't have been there“

why?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:05

Because he is a paedophile enabler. I don't care if his Mum died. He should have no public role. We owe him nothing

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 13/09/2022 07:06

I'm really disappointed these people have been arrested after heckling and waving placards and showing utter disrespect and contempt for our Queen at this time.

I'm disappointed that members of the general public didn't step up and deal with it themselves, there and then, and spit in their faces.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2022 07:06

He hasn’t been convicted of anything. Not sure how he could be prevented from attending?

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:06

"My uncle was let out of prison for the wake (the night before) and funeral of my Nana."

Did your uncle parade through the streets protected at the public expense?

Chakraleaf · 13/09/2022 07:07

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/09/2022 22:07

There's a time and a place to protest. Those aren't it.

I agree. It's not forcing as such but just disrespectful

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:07

He can attend the funeral and keep away from official ceremonies

Meseekslookatme · 13/09/2022 07:08

Theres probably a personal safety aspect.
That guy that heckled Andrew looked kike he was about to get the shit kicked out of him.

PooWeeBum · 13/09/2022 07:08

Sometimes people are arrested for their own safety, and then de-arrested after the fact. The police need to keep the peace, someone showing up to a somber event where people are mourning shouting and heckling are not likely to be received well by the general public

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:09

Women are getting arrested/moved away from their lawful protest"for their own safety" too. What times we live in.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2022 07:11

bellinisurge · Today 07:07
He can attend the funeral and keep away from official ceremonies“

so bow to pressure and basically admit his guilt? That’s not going to happen, is it?

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 13/09/2022 07:11

You're advocating for mob justice then? Why stop at spitting.....surely bringing back hanging, drawing and quartering would be more appropriate....?

PooWeeBum · 13/09/2022 07:12

As a pp said the guy heckling Andrew looked like he was about to get the shit kicked out of him.

what should the police do? Let a mass brawl ensue?

I think Andrew is a prick also but there is a time and a place

Shinyandnew1 · 13/09/2022 07:14

Is this because of the anti-protest rules Priti Patel introduced?

Andromachehadabadday · 13/09/2022 07:15

bellinisurge · 13/09/2022 07:06

"My uncle was let out of prison for the wake (the night before) and funeral of my Nana."

What’s that got to do with anything?

as it stands he hasn’t been convicted of anything.

if people who have been convicted of something are allowed to attend funeral traditions, people who are counts but not been convicted of anything will be able to attend too.

How much of the public money would be saved by Andrew not attending?
