The royal family

When do we think the King's Coronation will be?

It took 16 months to plan EIIR's Coronation, but I should think they could do it more quickly these days with improvements in technology. And Charles will have had a long time to think about what he wants! I would guess next June.

Queen Victoria died in January, Edward VII crowned in August of the following year

Edward's coronation didn't happen on the date originally planned - he had appendicitis and it had to be cancelled and rescheduled.

The Queen's coronation couldn't really have happened any earlier than it did. Summer of 1952 would have been too soon, so June '53 was really the earliest possible date - and even then they didn't get good weather.

I think June next year for the coronation, but maybe not the same week as the Jubilee - it might be thought inappropriate.

When there's a Queen Consort, she is traditionally crowned at the same time - as George VI and Queen Elizabeth were.

May is apparently the driest month in England most years. Maybe next May.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 11/09/2022 15:02

I think Charles is sensible rather than sentimental, and won't see a problem with having his coronation on roughly the same date as previous jubilee celebrations. I think he'll see it as a handy way of ensuring future jubilee celebrations of his own (although I really doubt he'll reign for even 25 years due to his age). So my guess is Thursday 1st or Friday 2nd June 2022, moving the end of May bank holiday again to give a four day weekend. I'm already looking at booking a camping pitch offgrid for those dates ...

Bank Holidays next spring/summer:

Good Friday 7th April
Easter Monday 10th April
Early May Bank Holiday 1st May (Mayday falls on a Monday for once)
Spring Bank Holiday 29th May

My money would be on them going for a date around the 29th May Bank Holiday or moving it to a few days later as they did for the Jubilee. I hope they don't wait too long to announce it. I still remember with a shudder the year we had a Bank Holiday sprung on us for the Royal Wedding (William and Catherine) and it coincided with a hugely important day at work, so I had to re-schedule dozens of things at fairly short notice.

That late May holiday has been messed around a lot of late. It was moved in 2020 for VE Day celebrations, which of course came to nothing in the end because we were in lockdown.

I'm going away for most of the Easter holidays! So I'm predicting it will be then, because I really don't want to miss the coronation and Sod's law and all that

Zosime · 11/09/2022 18:13

It won't be at Easter, not with Charles being the Head of the Church of England and Easter being the greatest festival of the Christian church.

Ramadan next year runs from late March to late April, too.

cortex10 · 11/09/2022 18:14

2 June 2023 is the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's coronation in 1953.

The logical part of me realises this.
My more logical answer is going to end of May beginning of June time

That would seem to be the perfect date - it's a Friday, too, which would work well for a long weekend of celebration.

(Camilla, if you're on Mumsnet and reading this, have a word with him indoors!)

Mourning doesn't have to be a year. King Charles has already announced that the official mourning period for the Royal family will end 7 days after the funeral.

And it's half term! In England at least. So the argument of kids have missed enough school wont be valid. Whereas the Friday before that leading to a long 4 day bank holiday weekend, schools would ordinarily be in session

MermaidEyes · 11/09/2022 18:34

My guess is like others, tagged on to the late May Bank Holiday. Would be the most sensible option. Any later and exams will be taking place, once those dates are fixed it will be difficult to suddenly announce a Bank Holiday coronation on a Monday in June when several thousand kids are due to sit a Maths GCSE or something.

Shinyandnew1 · 11/09/2022 18:42

If a bank holiday was put in the half term-the schools would be granted an extra day to have when they chose.

Crucible · 11/09/2022 18:44

Saturday 1st of July, anniversary of his investiture as Prince of Wales. I'd lay money on it.

Definitely not - 1st July was Diana's birthday!

Think that might be cancelled out! Someone on another thread said that the bank holiday next Monday might have to be made up for at some point ie another day of school before the summer holidays.

WinnieTheW0rm · 11/09/2022 18:51

I think June next year, around the time of the Trooping of the Colour (which may or may not continue as Official Birthday.

If it's done during half term, then it won't impact on exams in E/W (that half term doesn't vary between regions because of exams) I don't know if it's the same in S/NI but with plenty of notice, one day shouldn't make a critical difference

Shinyandnew1 · 11/09/2022 18:54

They won’t do this, no.

Riverlee · 11/09/2022 18:55

All the jubilees have been the weekend of June 5th, so I reckon that weekend.

Frances658 · 11/09/2022 19:00

@MinglingFlamingo , if they had it in half term, schools would just have another day off at some other time, like they did this year for the Jubilee.

Frances658 · 11/09/2022 19:05

Sorry, just seen someone else already made that point! But no, if extra bank holidays are announced nationally, schools need to give everyone a different day off if they fall within a school holiday. This was agreed with the unions last year.

The date of the coronation will be released in plenty of time for the exam boards to take it into consideration, rather than the other way round. There will not be any exams on that day or on any other public holiday. It is up to your DC to plan their revision appropriately around whatever is going on at the time, as would be the case at any other year. One coronation isn't going to make or break their exams.

Luckily the exam boards haven't even released provisional timetables for next summer yet let alone final ones. So they would be able to tweak timetables for an extra bank holiday.
Though I agree with other posters that over May half term might be good, or some time in July maybe. Shifting the early May bank holiday (which is pretty pointless imo so soon after Easter) would work for me.

TeenDivided · 11/09/2022 19:09

^Exam boards for England that is.

I have two DC doing exams next year, would it be unreasonable to assume they'll take exam period into consideration?

How would a coronation impact exams?
