I had no idea she birthed (the now King) Charles via C-section, at home, IN Buckingham Palace... Imagine!

Didn’t know the Queen was a breech birth either

The QM hated them and blamed them for her husband’s early death. She refused to receive them for years and only saw Wallis again at the Duke of Windsor’s funeral.

Also Wallis and Edward VIII, as he was at the time, were pretty cruel to the then Duchess of York, calling her “The Dowdy Duchess” and referring to her as being more like a “fat-bottomed cook” than a Duchess.

Yes you’re right QM hated Wallis and Edward , It was “fat Scottish cook “they called her

We were talking about this yesterday (I'd not heard that story about him or that he was sterile) but thought that she might have always ended up as Queen as he didn't have any kids with Wallis. He died in 1972 so she might still have made a Golden Jubilee and while not beating Victoria, she would have still been Queen for a very long time. That's assuming he wouldn't have killed the monarchy by then of course, or ended up on trial for treason given his Nazi links (can the king be hanged for high treason).

I’m pretty sure that Charles I was executed for the charge of treason but I’m sure someone else will correct me if I’m wrong

KillingMeDeftly · 24/09/2022 22:43

I think the cook nickname was due to an old rumour that the QM was the daughter of the family cook!

It was because of her weight

The Hanoverian kings all married German princesses. Victoria was married to a German, Edward VII was married to Danish princess who was actually German, and Mary of Teck was also of German descent. George VI bucked the tradition by married a Scottish Earl's daughter.

Not entirely true re the " Danish Princess" her father was of the duchies of Schleswig, that was Danish at the time he was born it is now German "The beginning of his reign was marked by the Danish defeat in the Second Schleswig War and the subsequent loss of the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg which made the king immensely unpopular. "

The Danish royal family can trace their royal line more than a thousand years to a king believed to be born around the year 900 So I think they get to claim themselves Danish NOT german.

CheeseMuffin · 30/09/2022 06:33

Not sure they'll be particularly Danish for much longer as the current heir is half-French and married an Australian!

That when the RF hosts BBQs at Balmoral the Queen liked to make the salad dressing. I often wonder about what kind of meals she could cook and how often she cooked. I imagine quite a lot in Malta then maybe mainly when they were at Balmoral.

The thing about people sending their ration coupons to Elizabeth to help with her wedding dress, and her getting extra from the government so sending back what she didn't need.

How on earth did she, or anyone, know where to send them back to?

Really not meaning to quibble or be stroppy, but just occurred to me, this was 1947!

Clothes were still rationed until March 1949.

Dinoteeth · 01/10/2022 07:44

How on earth did she, or anyone, know where to send them back to?

Presumably people would have written a formal covering letter, including their address.

I think clothes and sweets were rationed for a while.

I didn’t know that she was a Girl Guide (not that surprising when you think of it), or that they had their own group - the 1st Buckingham Palace Girl Guides. I don’t know why but that stood out amongst all the other stuff.

I think her nanny started that GG group.

This is completely wrong, it was used from 1923 and was made compulsory for nazi party members from 1926. The whole reason she was doing it was because it was associated with the nazis and was thereforeall over the news at the time.

Similar to someone doing a "v" for victory a few years later because Churchill popularised it or the "rock out" hand gesture after seeing a band in the 80s or a child saluting after seeing a guard at Buckingham palace....they are just copying something that was in the popular consciousness at the time - the early version of a tictok video if you will.

This certainly doesn't mean I think the queen was a nazi (apart from anything else she was a CHILD copying her mother).

for context the whole English football team did the salute at the Olympics www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3165923/Pictured-Queen-taught-NAZI-SALUTE-Edward-VIII-secret-1933-film-Balmoral.html

Thanks for that information.

I hadn’t seen the photos of her giving the Nazi salute before.

What? Let me finish work and read the rest - I’m sure there’s a reasonable explanation for this!

Toddlerteaplease · 10/10/2022 19:48

Apparently she last rode 3 moths before her death. Which is pretty remarkable for a 96 year old. Can't remember where I heard it.

Philip apparently loved to BBQ and was always in charge of the BBQ.

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon 👋
there is footage of Philip barbecuing at Balmoral in this 1969 documentary
m.youtube.com/watch?v=bfjLvUs7nYY
Also Harry described his grandad as “ King of the barbecue” in a statement released after his death, thought that was really sweet and touching
