I had no idea she birthed (the now King) Charles via C-section, at home, IN Buckingham Palace... Imagine!

The other two Charles' reigns are also referred to as Carolean. Caroline is the feminine version of the name Charles.

TugboatAnnie · 09/09/2022 14:10

I was querying why he was born at Buckingham Palace because it wasn't their home but googled Clarence House and it was undergoing repairs. So they must have been temporarily housed at BP at that time.

Yes, it was done when Catherine was pregnant (or possibly when they got married.... before George was known to be a boy anyway)

Yes, exactly. And so Princess Charlotte is above Prince Louis in line to the throne. So glad it doesn't skip girls now! Such an archaic rule.

I did know, but I like, that she took the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia out for a drive when she heard that women weren't allowed to drive there. Drove at great speed down narrow roasts to deliberately scare the shit out of him

Lolliesareonme · 09/09/2022 15:17

That she was a pigeon fancier and maintained a flock of racing pigeons at Sandringham.

Mind boggling isn't it, but quite a dark reason. I believe it was in case a child was born "with a disfigurement" and "was swapped" to be "an imposter". One very, very old tradition I'm so glad ended with the Queen's first birth.

(Ref britishheritage.com/royals/royal-tradition-ended-prince-charles)

I've always understood that the fear of an 'imposter' royal baby wasn't to do with disfigurement, but dates from 1688 when the Catholic James II's wife gave birth to a boy. Because they'd been married for some years without surviving children, it had been assumed that James would be succeeded as monarch by his Protestant daughter by his first marriage. The birth of an unexpectedly healthy boy who'd grow up Catholic led his anti-Catholic enemies to claim that the baby was actually an imposter who'd been smuggled in to the queen's bed in a warming pan, and so of course could not succeed to the throne.

But when she was born she wasn't the child of a monarch.

I think they mean "the first time the Queen gave birth" rather than when she^ was born Smile

I do remember reading about that.. quite funny! 😆

TugboatAnnie · 09/09/2022 15:41

I've just googled witnessing the births and apparently all royal births were winessed. So the queen's birth was witnessed even though it wasn't likely she would be a future monarch. The last witnessed birth was 85 years ago with Princess Alexandra's birth then George VI said enough was enough!

Seraphina1993 · 09/09/2022 15:45

I didn't know Charles was born via c section but I knew the Queen herself was born via c section and that the Queen mother had struggled to conceive for quite a few years before her birth and didn't fall pregnant with Margaret as quickly as she was expecting either

I didn’t know that was descended from the Stewart’s until I just heard Ian Blackford speaking in the HoC.

Yes, she is a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots.

That she was older than Anne Frank, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley. To me those are names from history.

i just cannot imagine the number of people she met. From the worlds most important to humble. From famous to insignificant. From the 19th century and the 21st century.

One of my all time favourite things about her!

Incredible when you put it like that.

It has to be via a browser rather than an app.

Thank you!

Why did she have Charles at Buckingham Palace?

Most babies were born at home at that time - though not by caesarian.

JelloFishy · 09/09/2022 16:45

Hahaha I love the cow thing! Thank you!

I love that she was a Land Girl and could fix engines and drive trucks.

She wasn't actually a Land Girl, although they did sterling work, and indeed were called the land army.

She was in the ATS, Auxiliary Territorial Service, the women's army at the time, and it's nice to know she knew how to strip down an engine.

It’s to do with the Latin for Charles.

Is the state of Carolina named after Charles II ?

KnickerlessParsons · 09/09/2022 17:03

By Charles II in honour of Charles I, I believe.

I didn't know she was a member of Sandringham WI and went to their meetings.
