Andrew returning to public life

"Prince Andrew — who recently paid a multimillion-pound settlement to Virginia Giuffre to keep her allegations of sexual abuse, which he denies, out of court — is set to make a controversial return to public life on Monday.

As a member of the Order of the Garter, this country’s oldest and most senior order of chivalry, Andrew, 62, will appear alongside senior members of the royal family at the Garter Day service at Windsor Castle."

It’s coming from the queen who is very Ill and frail and not understanding he is finished

Bullshit. Don't make excuses for her. She's the head of that family and she makes the rules (and by all accounts she is very much the matriarch). She's been brushing his behaviour under the carpet for decades, because ultimately, she doesn't care. This is what is means to be privileged, especially in this way, where it's handed to them as a birthright. She doesn't give a shit.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 13/06/2022 10:50

Oh and an elected head of state would be considerably cheaper - the Irish model is an excellent place to start.

NoRegretsNoTearsGoodbye · 13/06/2022 10:52

@TheLeadbetterLife couldnt agree more. Ultimately she can’t understand why the peasants should have any say in how her deplorable son behaves. We should know our place as we did in the good old days.

@JuneJubilee I think it’s possibly you that needs to do the research 😄. There is no proof whatsoever that tourism would be affected if we moved to an elected head of state. Not one shred of evidence. If you look at most visited tourist attractions they barely feature. You’ve been well and truly taken in by the RF PR machine.

Exactly!

I know royalists hate the Palace of Versailles being brought up but it is relevant. I have been there, it is absolutely stupendous, it was a long time ago, and I really really want to go again.
It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world... just remind me when they said cheerio to their royal family Grin. France beats us hands down on tourist income.

@EdithWeston The article was in The Times. So

@JuneJubilee - but their private money comes from us! Under George Osbourne when they went from the civil list to the Sovereign grant their income went up exponentially and that money is money that used to go to the treasury. So it is not really private.

That money is to pay them for their public work

They also have their own money from their private work/businesses/investments

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 10:55

@PurpleWisteria but you can't have that thought on here
Legally he doesn't seem to of broken any laws and is not convicted
Morally very wrong and certainly had dodgy mates who he should of dropped like a ton of bricks
Didn't help he paid out, he should of let it go to court

diddl · 13/06/2022 10:56

I think that they all pretty much think that they entitled to their lifestyle & deference due to who they are.

Some just don't show it quite as much as others.

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 10:57

@StaunchMomma that is such a disgusting word to use
People use it are just as bad
Its name calling in every sense

There is absolutely no way Charles will step back to allow William to be King . He has waited 70 years for this role .

I will never recognise Charlie as king. Not after Diana called Savill their marriage counsellor, Charlie's support for the abusing bishop and TamponGate to name just a few.

SpindleSheWrote · 13/06/2022 10:59

Yes, imagine all our royal palaces and castles actually being properly open to the public, along with all the royal estates and gardens that are currently fenced off.

I'd probably pay good money to see that, like I did at Versailles in France and Peles Castle in Romania. Fascinating glimpses into former monarchies and how they lived and ruled.

GreenCard · 13/06/2022 11:00

Fuck no.

He is an entitled test who beloved he deserves the title due to the luck of being that single sperm from his dad. I’m over the royal birth right crap.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 13/06/2022 11:01

No, @Kennykenkencat - the civil list was partly for that. They lobbied for years to change back to the sovereign grant (the change was made by mad king George 1760 something) which was initially set as it was because it was the monarchs responsibility to pay for the army and public services. They now have the money with none of the responsibilities. The amount they have raked in under the change has been phenomenal. They also claim expenses to cover the work they do and anything remotely linked to their public duties.

Alltheleavesaregreen1 · 13/06/2022 11:02

Get rid of them all. Seriously, why are we fawning over a bunch of ordinary, talentless, not very bright, over-privileged oiks, one of whom is involved in child sex-trafficking? Have we taken leave of our sense? What makes them so special?

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 11:02

@Kennykenkencat I think your right but there are some on here who only think there way of thinking is right, and that everyone should listen to them
I can see i going straight to william as well and Charles has always been wanting to slim down the monarchy , long before Andrew
I don't think he is as out of touch with public opinion as many think and he is aware change is needed
I haven't seen where hes getting involved in politics etc , but with change maybe they will speak up more
People want it modernised but then don't want change

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 11:03

@SausagePourHomme at least get your facts right it was paid with their private money not taxpayers
They are pretty wealthy and pay a lot of tax themselves

Roussette · 13/06/2022 11:05

wooly Yes, and now by law the Sovereign Grant can never be decreased, only increased. So if Charles does slim down the monarchy like he has promised for decades, it'll just be more dosh for less people!

SpindleSheWrote · 13/06/2022 11:05

Rwanda?

And there are a few taxes that would be massive that they don't pay. But Joe Public does.

My abiding memory of the jubilee is Rod Stewart being made to sing Sweet Caroline, poor old sod.

That was brilliant when he said something like “the BBC are making me sing this”

I missed this, what was it in reference too?

It is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world... just remind me when they said cheerio to their royal family Grin. France beats us hands down on tourist income.

Of course France beat us on tourism.

They are a massive country with seaside resorts you might want to visit and towns that are geared up for out door pursuits that you you might actually want to try with weather that is more pleasant and predictable.
Anyone remember last year the summer holiday news report from some British seaside resort where everyone was wearing thick coats and rain was lashing down and people were walking , tilting into the wind.

Our seaside resorts are either down market holes that have a predominance of slot machines, cheap beer and burger joints

Or more upmarket places that are expensive

If you want to stay over night then either places are eye wateringly expensive and it is cheaper to go to France for the holidays than stay in the U.K.

worriedatthistime · 13/06/2022 11:08

@Wheresmywoolyjumpers they also own lots of land and have other huge income
People think we can get rid and claim all they own , its not all public like they think
Also tourists do flock for the royal family , they want their chance to see the queen etc
My friend works at airport , their were loads coming over for the jubilee
Like it or not they are here to stay and really they don't affect us that much and even if we became a republic there would be no more money back in the publics pocket

SpindleSheWrote · 13/06/2022 11:09

It amazes me that people think that the royal family has accumulated its wealth from anything other than centuries of being handed most of it by parliament to spend or invest as it likes.

The queen controls it and doles it out.

Andrew is bitter that he is not in control of the loot.

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 13/06/2022 11:09

It’s almost like they want the monarchy to end.
