This seems to be the most tone deaf and damaging decision. It's a public facing event with international leaders and royals. If it was a closed family gathering I could understand it - he is her son still- but why on earth would they allow him to escort her to her seat?! He should be invisible from now on and never represent the RF again. He could have attended and stood somewhere out of the way. She could have chosen anyone to escort her. It's staggeringly awful!

It's a very clear message that he's her son and she stands by him.

He may well have had public royal privileges removed but this is a loud and clear message that he's still her son

Not really surprising from a woman whose in her final days.

SquirrelG · 29/03/2022 20:15

Seriously, do you not think the Queen is capable of making her own choice on this? He's her son, it's his father's memorial, she is perfectly entitled to want to be escorted by him.

Honestly, some of you must have the most dull lives judging by the things which seem to rattle your cages.

Get over yourself OP.

I absolutely think she’s capable of making that choice and she was entitled to make it. I think it was a terrible choice to have made.

Did anyone ever doubt who his mum was?

twelly · 29/03/2022 20:22

@TinyTortoise
I think its more heatless to make a son or daughter invisible at such an event. Prince Andrew is a son (regardless of his title.)

@Theunamedcat

Were the trafficking laws even around when this happened?
Yes, in some of the locations alleged.
Theunamedcat · 29/03/2022 20:43

As a planet We are spectacularly shite at enforcing laws that protect women and children

Yes, especially when so many of the perpetrators are part of the establishment and impervious to the laws.
CrotchetyQuaver · 29/03/2022 21:07

Leave her be, she's nearly 96. If she chose to have him at her side at a family occasion (I think she's far beyond the point of managing on her own now) then so be it. I doubt she's going to be around much longer, just hope she can hang on until June for her Jubilee... the others are probably tearing their hair out at her refusal to be seen in public in a wheelchair and he was the only one prepared to go along with her wishes.

BadgerB · 29/03/2022 21:08
@BadgerB surely the difference here is that Prince Charles will become HEAD of the Church of England, which is quite different to being a member of the Church of England and surely involves a higher expected standard of behaviour? Would you be happy with Prince Andrew as head of the church?
I think I would accept it - though not particularly happily. It's not a position the monarch has volunteered for (not for centuries anyway) and only requires a nominal alliance to the Church. Though I am fairly sure the Queen is a genuine Christian, and Charles - probably. Wouldn't like to think that the Archbishop of Canterbury or the Pope were great and unrepentant sinners, tho' holders of those offices have been in the past.

Aishah231 · 29/03/2022 21:08

What this act says is - I don't really care if he raped an underage girl he's my son. Some people might respect that decision but I don't and as a public figure this is a horrible message to send out.

Get over myself? Haha ok. You're drastically missing the point though aren't you. The point is it looks appalling to the public and rest of the world and will be yet another poor choice which damages the monarchy paving the way for Her Maj to be the last, or at least the penultimate monarch.

How old are you? have you had any major bereavements?

LadyShatterly · 29/03/2022 21:18

No, this act says,”I’m nearly 100 years old, I can hardly walk, my single son who has been convicted of no crime but torn apart by the publici cannot take the same precedence as his siblings or children even though he is equally bereaved. He can lend me an arm so I can struggle to an event I feel it is my duty to attend while I grieve for my husband of 70 years who died and left me. I don’t want a random man to support me physically so my son can help. I am his mother so I think of him as a hero who flew helicopters in the Falklands, and I love him. He gave up his royal life to stop embarrassing me and this is a family event that unfortunately is goggled at by Outraged of Tonbridge Wells as a public circus.”

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2022 21:20

I think Andrew must have joined mumsnet. I can’t believe all the posts defending him.

SpinningTheSeedsOfLove · 29/03/2022 21:21

I don't think the OP is the Head of State anywhere tbh

LadyShatterly · 29/03/2022 21:22

It’s defending the Queen. Not Andrew.

You have missed the point by a mile Hmm

Grasping · 29/03/2022 21:26

@Mumdiva99

After seeing her sitting alone at the funeral I couldn't care less who escorts her.....just so long as she is escorted and looked after. I thought the image of her at the funeral was one of the saddest things I've ever seen. (And yes I know it happened for other people too during Covid, and I feel the same empathy for them).

Why are people defending the queen for publicly supporting Andrew Confused

I agree. Andrew is a complete nobody in my eyes. But the Queen can have her own children at their dad's memorial service in whatever way she likes.
PurplePansy05 · 29/03/2022 21:33

Was she trying to encourage the public to consider forgiveness/have mercy for him before she dies? I know it's a crass thing to say. Maybe she did it because she knows it's one of her final opportunities to show the public he's still her child, even if disgraced and it was a family occasion. Maybe she didn't want to die and leave him completely hated by everyone.

BUT. This wasn't the right thing to do, it's so, so inappropriate.

ididntevennotice · 29/03/2022 21:34

Of course she can, and she did, that doesn't make it the right decision though.

LadyShatterly · 29/03/2022 21:35

Because they want to? Because they have a different opinion to you?
