This seems to be the most tone deaf and damaging decision. It's a public facing event with international leaders and royals. If it was a closed family gathering I could understand it - he is her son still- but why on earth would they allow him to escort her to her seat?! He should be invisible from now on and never represent the RF again. He could have attended and stood somewhere out of the way. She could have chosen anyone to escort her. It's staggeringly awful!

He was highly regarded by his fellow servicemen/people

I don't pretend to know either way, but that's very far from what other posters have said on here - and FWIW they've also claimed to "know it for a fact"

She can hate the sin but love the sinner.

She can love the sinner in private. Hate the sin very clearly in the public eye.

She had to do her husbands funeral alone. Nothing wrong with her family being at the service.

When she dies would you all begrudge him going to her funeral?

twelly · 29/03/2022 19:46

Prince Andrew has not been convicted of a crime and in this country we presume innocence - this applies to everyone. In addition this was a memorial service for his father - he has every right to attend. If his mother wished for him to accompany her then it is her decision.

I can’t say what I would “begrudge him” because my post would be deleted.

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2022 19:48

It’s not him being there. It’s him having such a visible role given what’s just happened.

@AndAsIfByMagic

I think some of the frothers on this thread need to realise that not everyone believes PA was guilty.

If he had sex with that woman she was of age so to call him a paedo is just ignorant stupidity.

He's a creep and a lech, I believe. But I don't believe everything that has been said about him. I can't stand him but the "holier than thou ranting of some mumsnetters is nauseating.

Not your business. There are far more important things going on.

If he raped that girl , not had sex with that woman. She was trafficked for sex, there was no.consent. She was not an adult, she was not even 18.
Livingtothefull · 29/03/2022 19:49

What do you think it looks like to have our Head of State showing public support for a person who has been accused of sex crimes against underage girls, and potentially escaped justice through his family paying off his accuser?

I don't agree that it is only up to the Queen who she has support her at the memorial; the fact is, this is a public facing occasion and she is Head of State. I don't think most people would begrudge Andrew attending his father's memorial provided he keeps a low profile..you would think he himself would know to do that. But giving him such a prominent role just looks unbelievably arrogant and reflects very poorly on them all.

He would always be visible. I guess he could have gone in a plain suit.
vickyc90 · 29/03/2022 19:50

He's her son and what he did was legal in the uk

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2022 19:51

He would always be visible.

He walked in with the queen! He could have been less visible.

They are talking about this on Outside Source at the moment.

augustusglupe · 29/03/2022 19:51

twinmum2007 Agree. I've always respected her and still do. She's done what's expected of her her whole life, she can have who the hell she wants to escort her at her own husband's memorial.

SoftSheen · 29/03/2022 19:53

Andrew is dreadful, however he's entitled to go to his own Father's memorial service and to support his own mother. These aren't official or honorary duties, though carried out in public view.

7394GFReg · 29/03/2022 19:53

Andrew was known to be friends with a human trafficker, with someone who procured children for sex. And now Andrew escorts the head of state in a publicly televised memorial.

It is not ok.

The Queen is more important than him so all eyes would have been on her. He was merely a human walking aid

No it wasn't. The victim was trafficked.

Oh FGS no-one is saying she didn't have the right to choose this. So many posters are just being sentimental, instead of looking intellectually at this.

The point of the OP is, what a poor decision that is in terms of the RF's PR. They are really shooting themselves in the foot at the moment with how terribly out of touch they appear, and it will not bode well for the institution.

You are utterly deluded if you think that’s true.

It does indeed reflect poorly on them all.

CornishGem1975 · 29/03/2022 19:57

She's 95. I imagine she's at the point in life, after spending her entire life doing what she had to do, where she's probably thinking 'I'm going to peg it soon so I'll do what I ruddy want to'.

Accused, not convicted. And that’s their loophole.

PurpleDaisies · 29/03/2022 20:02

Whether it’s a loophole or not doesn’t really change what it looks like.

Theunamedcat · 29/03/2022 20:09

Were the trafficking laws even around when this happened?
