The royal family

Do you think William and Kates tour was 'tone deaf'?

I'm interested to hear from people about this.

FWIW I think it's been an odd tour - almost an unnecessary flaunt of wealth and power.

I don't understand the point of the tour tbh and whilst I don't know if I'd consider it tone deaf as the papers suggest, it's definitely pointless and a reminder for me why the monarchy are becoming so outdated and more irrelevant, though I'm interested to hear others opinions on this.

I doubt very much they are 'frantic'

And planning routinely goes right on to the start of the trip

There have been discussions for years between the Palace and the governments of the countries where the monarch is head of state about Jubilee tours, with the aim that all the realms and dominions have a visit, between February and June whenever possible.

WinnieTheW0rm · 05/04/2022 08:57

It would be a metric fucktonne worse if the Wessexes pulled out of a long planned trip!

Roussette · 05/04/2022 09:53

I am quoting different news sources who say they are 'frantically' revising plans in light of the K&W Royal Tour.

Who knows if that is true. I had no idea another royal tour was in the offing.

meditrina · 05/04/2022 10:00

It's pretty obvious those news sources are using hyperbole

Yes, there are a series of tours. Princess Anne is off to Papua New Guinea later this month. Can't remember others offhand.

meditrina · 05/04/2022 10:02

Oh, and Princess Royal is also going to Australia

good grief at a time when people are struggling with the cost of living, do we really need to see these over privileged people going on jollies?
I have always liked the RF, but they really don't have a clue.

The date of the Jubilee can't be changed, whatever else is going on in the world.

I dont think it's right for the British to be telling those in the other nations that they can't host the representative of their monarch during a Platinum Jubilee (only the fourth ever in history).

Serenster · 07/04/2022 12:50

Yes @EdithWeston, it’s one of the blind spots that always bemuses me on threads like this - all these posters thinking it’s perfectly okay for them to be deciding what other countries should and shouldn’t do on the basis that the posters know better than their leaders what is appropriate for that country to do in relation to their own Head of State (who they are perfectly free to keep or reject, depending on their own wishes).

As on this thread, a key objection to these countries choosing to have representatives visit is because it’s tone deaf, because, colonialism. The posters never seem to realise that it’s they themselves who are assuming cultural superiority in declaring they know better than these independent nations about what they should want. Who are the ones demonstrating colonialist attitudes here, then?

Strange that no one has started a “ tone deaf” thread about Edward and Sophie’s tour given the open letter , demonstrations and hastily rearranged schedule !
Or is it only William and Catherine who can be criticised?

Charles and Camilla are coming to Canada next month. I didn’t know until I googled it just now. They aren’t coming to my area.

I read somewhere it had been cancelled.

GrouchyKiwi · 25/04/2022 15:49

Only the Grenada leg of the tour was cancelled. They were in St Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday, and St Lucia on Saturday.

“Only the Grenada leg of the tour was cancelled. They were in St Vincent and the Grenadines yesterday, and St Lucia on Saturday.”

Only 1 part of C and W’s tour was cancelled yet there has been a thread berating them and the advisers . I just wondered why E and S aren’t receiving the same amount of criticism given the reaction of many residents of the islands they are visiting .

ajandjjmum · 25/04/2022 17:32

A massive part of the criticism of W & K seemed to hang on the fact that they went to say hello to a bunch of kids, who were at a football ground, but behind fencing. It would have suited the PR far more if they'd been ignored.

Thank goodness W & K didn't, neither did Marcus Rashford, who was with them that day.

A two-dimensional picture doesn't tell the whole story, but some people seem unable to look beyond it.

Glad it's going well - on the whole - for Edward and Sophie.

There have been at least two other threads about this. It’s done to death.

Clearly not, given the number of people who have an opinion about it.

notanotheroneagain · 25/04/2022 17:42

Calling Sterling, Rashford gives you an idea of the kind of posters who see nothing wrong with what W&K did.
Not only did Sterling not come from a former empire institution, but goes to this field quite often to donate etc., he also did not ride around his subjects on a land rover, swanning about in expensive dresses and jewellery.

Whoops - so I'm (an implied) racist as I'm not a football follower and got my players muddled!

The famous footballer joined W & K saying hello to the kids who were behind the fence, and they looked to be delighted that they had all come over to see them. Let's not get this confused with the rights and wrongs of the empire - that's a whole different conversation. For those children it was about the here and now, and I noticed none who were upset to be greeted, albeit through a fence.
