Do you think Camilla will be Queen or Consort?

julieca · 14/12/2021 13:57

Obviously when the time comes. But it will.
I keep reading different opinions about whether Camilla will be called Queen or Consort.
Personally, I think she should be calléd Queen. It goes with her position. As I understand it, Philip was called Consort because otherwise as King, he would have outranked the Queen. That would not have been okay. But if Camilla is called Queen, she will not outrank Charles as King.
I know none of us knows whether she will be called Queen or Consort. But what do you think should happen?

She will be Queen Consort but may be styled as Princess Consort.

The same as Charles is still the Prince of Wales, and thus she is the Princess of Wales but they choose to be styled as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall.

Viviennemary · 14/12/2021 20:23

I don't think the media will refer to her as Queen if she doesn't take the title. Nobody is yet calling Louise Princess Louise though she can take that title. The odd person might just to be contrary.

julieca · 14/12/2021 20:27

I am not convinced most people know who Louise is. Everyone virtually knows who Camilla is.

Although technically, when Charles is King, Camilla will be Queen (yes, Queen Consort, but the consort part is not usually added).
However, I am not sure why she can't continue to use the Duchess of Cornwall title, as that is how she is know. Just as P Phillip was the Duke of Edinburgh

AnFiaRuaNua · 15/12/2021 12:12

Could Princess Camilla work

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 15/12/2021 12:18

She will be Queen. It’s in Charles’ gift to give her the title and I’m pretty sure that he will.

Remember how there was a fudge with Diana that she was allowed to be called "Diana, The Princess of Wales" but not "Princess Diana". There might be a similar thing that Camilla can be referred to as Queen in a sentence like "The King and Queen of England attended a reception at the White House" but she can't be actually called "Queen Camilla"

That wasn't quite it with Diana. She was never (officially) Princess Diana - only born princesses are styled that way. She was HRH Diana, Princess of Wales from her marriage. Upon divorce, she lost the HRH.

I suspect that Camilla will stick to Princess Consort, as it would look bad to go back on an agreement and I'd hope Charles will not want to stir up a fuss when he's already a controversial character who might have a rocky landing as King.

However, I'd have been very happy for her to be Queen (Queen Consort). That is what she will be, after all. The only possible argument anyone could make against it is that Andrew Parker Bowles is still living, which even the C of E itself no longer cares about. Camilla is just the right partner for Charles, perfect for the job.

From memory (I'm old!), Diana was either Diana, Princess of Wales or Princess Charles of Wales.

It was the press who (incorrectly) called her Princess Diana from the word go.

CrispAndFrosty · 15/12/2021 13:53

Yep exactly @ajandjjmum which also explains why Princess Michael of Kent is called that, her real name being Marie Christine. And why Kate is known as the Duchess of Cambridge - who wants to be known as Princess William?!

Eeve · 15/12/2021 14:00

Can someone explain who Louise is??

Prince Edward's daughter, so the Queen's youngest grandaughter. Styled as Lady Louise Windsor, but as much right to being a princess as Beatrice and Eugenie.
BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/12/2021 14:05

Imo there should only be a Queen or a King as head of the state. Then their spouse is Prince/Princess Consort.

Its crap that in 2021/22 King outranks Queen. There should just be one of either at a time.

Eeve · 15/12/2021 14:46

@CrispAndFrosty oh my goodness - I honestly didn't know she existed?!

She has a brother too! Viscount James something or other. Could have been a Prince, of course. Never hear of James but Louise was a bridesmaid for William and Kate and she's been photographed quite a bit this last year, Prince Philip's funeral for example. Seems like a nice, quiet girl.

@AnFiaRuaNua

Could Princess Camilla work
Only if she was created princess in her own right, which could happen

Prince Phillip renounced his foreign princedom before his marriage, and was re-created as British prince in 1957. So similar could happen for Camilla. And then she would be Princess Camilla, not Princess Charles (which she couid be already if she chose to use that one of the various titles and styles currently avaiable to her)

Samcro · 15/12/2021 14:58

i hope she is queen, charles has been waiting his whole life for this job.

AnFiaRuaNua · 15/12/2021 17:11

Yeh, she should be forgiven for what she did in the 80s
If she'd murdered somebody she could be out by now. Its the past now.

In my opinion.

AnFiaRuaNua · 15/12/2021 17:12

I only mention that because i know some people think it complicates issues

julieca · 15/12/2021 17:13

I think there are some who will never forgive her. But the truth is whatever she is called, she will really be the Queen. So I think just accept that and call her the Queen.

I don't think she did anything wrong. By the time she rekindled her relationship with Charles, his marriage was dead and Diana was also having affairs.

She was vilified by the press because she was older than Diana and because she is average-looking rather than a world-renowned style icon, as Diana was.

If it had been the other way round - Charles married to Camilla but having an affair with Diana - everyone would've been cheering him on,

But as you say, even those who blame Camilla for breaking up Charles's marriage should have forgiven her by now. It's nearly a quarter of a century since Diana died - time to move on.

NandorTheRelentless · 15/12/2021 19:07

It's very outdated that a King outranks a Queen

Tania64 · 15/12/2021 19:12

They should all be kicked out of their roles & their housing ( which we the taxpayers own) and instead we vote for a republic state and a new head of state.

julieca · 15/12/2021 19:29

@ArblemarzipanTFruitcake that is the official story from Charles. It is disputed by many.

LookslovelyinSpringtime · 16/12/2021 02:47

I shouldn’t think Camilla is bothered by whether she is Queen or not. Princess Consort seems the best option as it won’t court controversy.
