The royal family

I’m in awe of the Queen

I’m no royalist, I dislike the fawning, particularly towards younger members of the family. Somehow I find myself watching Trooping the Colour and I can’t help but be impressed by the Queen.

She’s 95, very recently widowed following 70 odd years of marriage. She’s just got back from Cornwall and is again on active duty, enjoying this event. I know she’s lived an incredibly pampered life with the best health care, etc. I’m just amazed by her sense of duty and her strength.

I think she's incredible. To have spent her whole life serving her country, she is is dignified and professional and always appears to be enjoying the no doubt tedious events she has to attend.

Yes, she is rich and pampered, but she knew no other life and has accepted her fate and position delivered her work with real grace.

@Thewiseoneincognito

We are all going to feel the loss the day she is no longer here. She is simply marvellous.
Are we? It’s obviously sad when anyone dies but I can honestly say it will make zero difference to my life.

@smilesy

Yes but my point was that we were discussing her personal qualities. Not her involvement or otherwise in politics.
But she does involve herself in politics to the extent she seeks to avoid legislation that is troublesome to her - including any that would make the extent of her personal wealth public or equality legislation so she did not have to employ mixed race people in her household. So she certainly meddles in the affairs of state when it suits her.

Oh for goodness sake. Yes she probably does use “politics” in her personal life to a certain extent, like lots of people. I’m
It saying that is the right thing to do. But she does not have influence over government policy / prime ministers / presidents like some posters claim she should have. That is not in our constitution.

But I have just pointed out that she does have influence - the fact is she only chooses to use it to benefit herself in unseemly ways does not meant the influence is irrelevant or doesn't exist.

She certainly does not use 'politics' like lots of people - or have you been able to exempt yourself from legislation you didn't like recently? She can and does influence policy, directly for her own benefit and certainly not in the service of the public - quite the opposite in fact.

Exactly

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/jun/02/buckingham-palace-banned-ethnic-minorities-from-office-roles-papers-reveal

More than 50,000 people have called for a parliamentary investigation into an “unfathomable” mechanism that allows the Queen to vet draft laws before they are approved by the UK’s elected representatives.

They have signed a petition supporting an urgent investigation by a House of Commons committee as they are concerned that the “royal family has a worrying and undemocratic ability to influence the government behind closed doors”.

I don’t see sovereign immunity as the same thing as forming policy.

Not necessarily really. I think I will feel sort of .... OK there we go, she had a long life, now was her time to leave this earth. I'm sure the funeral will be massively moving but...

If you have lost someone to cancer early on in life and sat at their bedside, or lost a sibling in an absolute tragedy, those are the sort of things that I feel the loss of.

Not a very elderly lady who I have never met or is a member of my family.

That is not doing down her contribution or her dedication to her role.

Love Joni.

When she's gone, yes, we will know different. Let's hope it's a good 'different'.

smilesy · 12/06/2021 20:18

I remember when I was young an episode of “The Goodies” where they were supposed to be slightly on the future and they had a picture of a (fairly young) King Charles III. I must admit, I didn’t think I’d get to the age I am now with the Queen still on the throne 🤣

HeronLanyon · 12/06/2021 20:20

I was so astonished at her recent itinerary that I said to my dp ‘omg I’m turning into my mum, I admire her!’ - not royalists but I have a certain regard for her.

Roussette · 12/06/2021 20:21

Good lord, The Goodies... that's a blast from the past!

smilesy · 12/06/2021 20:25

Yes I know 😂. I just remember that the picture of King Charles made me realise that the Queen would not be there forever. I’m beginning to think I was wrong now though 😂

HeronLanyon · 12/06/2021 20:29

Used to watch The Goodies also ! Goody goody yum yum.

lboogy · 12/06/2021 20:44

What's so great about her? She's the head of brutal a colonial empire. Nothing admirable about that IMO

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/06/2021 20:47

Bloody loved the Goodies.

We must be of an age Grin

PrimulaPrimrose · 12/06/2021 20:47

She's great.

PrimulaPrimrose · 12/06/2021 20:48

Goodies were my favourite as a kid. That giant cat.

smilesy · 12/06/2021 20:49

@SheldonesqueTheBstard how are your “olds” as we call them in our family? Are they quite recovered from their temporary extra ailment?

smilesy · 12/06/2021 20:53

@iboogy. I think you are confusing her with Queen Victoria.

Roussette · 12/06/2021 20:54

Indeed we are of an age, innocent times!

But looking back the Goodies ... it was pretty bonkers!
