Will and Kate now have a YouTube channel - thoughts?

Just that really. I'm divided - ok one hand I totally get how they are desperate to appeal to a generation that they need to get on board to save the monarchy. If the younger generation don't buy into them then it's not going to be sustainable long term really is it.

But on the other hand I feel it's a bit weird and fake! And they are trying a bit too hard too suddenly to change their image - it's almost coming across as competitive.

What do you think?

Nothing much. I guess they have to move with the times. 🤷‍♀️

Fixitup2 · 07/05/2021 09:11

I don’t think it’s a YouTube channel where they’ll be doing unboxing videos and shopping haul videos. It’ll be videos about their work, the work the charities they’re involved in do and I think it could be a great platform for raising awareness. Other social media only allows very short videos so it’s a useful platform to be on.

KFleming · 07/05/2021 09:40

I don’t think it comes across as trying to change their image, surely the stuff that will be put on there will be in much the same vein as what they’ve done previously eg charities they support.

Samcro · 07/05/2021 09:42

well they can pretend its "work" and do even less.

Clutterbugsmum · 07/05/2021 09:46

hypocrites, come to mind. They have done nothing but complain through others about how other family members work but then do the same.

The pair of them need to get off their arses and do the 'job' they have. It funny how they are still doing 'Zoom' visits and yet even the Queen has done face to face visits.

Tbf, they have done face to face stuff.

myrtleWilson · 07/05/2021 20:41

I would actually watch Charlotte & George do a haul video of a trip to Smyth's....

HerRoyalNotness · 07/05/2021 20:44

I’d love to see unboxing of all the gifts that foreign governments send them and how they’re catalogued and stored etc. I wonder if very much of it is useful

Ohdeariedear · 07/05/2021 20:50

Standard channel to have alongside FB/Insta etc as part of the comms/marketing mix for any organisation these days.

More surprised it’s taken them this long to do it.

picturesandpickles · 07/05/2021 20:53

I'm not personally very interested but one thing I do wonder is the royals used to be a cut above, that was part of the appeal. Does it really work if they are just like any other mainstream celeb?

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 07/05/2021 21:28

I genuinely don't understand the problem - it's a social media channel. They also have Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It's not like they'll be doing "bad react" videos, it will just be videos of the engagements they carry ou

Roussette · 07/05/2021 21:35

Fine to do it and watch it if that's your sort of thing.

It's not mine but the RF need some modernising so go for it!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 07/05/2021 21:38

It's definitely a step forward in terms of sharing footage that would once upon a time be archived. The RF need to be more open if they want to keep the modern public happy.

From the promo video for their YouTube channel, I do wish the press would stop reporting the Kate called William 'dude's she so clearly didn't - it was 'do you'

Roussette · 07/05/2021 21:41

Totally agree

HumunaHey · 07/05/2021 21:59

It's very cringey.

It's obvious why they're doing it and makes sense as the younger generation really aren't bought into monarchy. But with the chain of past events, it screams desperation.

lulugee · 07/05/2021 22:52

@HumunaHey agreed just the timing of it all seems it poor taste IMO

I quite like William and Kate but I dont think I'd be interested in watching their videos.

Gingerkittykat · 08/05/2021 00:13

The very obvious publicity drive by the palace to have them thought of as saints really grinds my gears.

It wasn't that long ago that they were thought of as workshy and lazy and look how the PR machine has changed that.

It sickens me that they wheel the kids out for likes, the worst manipulation was at the start of lockdown when they said they had made artisan pasta and then Charlotte was filmed taking it to a pensioner's door. At the same time, everyone slated H and M for their publicity stunt of being caught on camera delivering food parcels.

There's been carefully planted stories about Kate in the media like the fact she was out buying kids books at Waterstones and then visiting the vigil for Sarah Everett.

I don't know if you have noticed the change in William, instead of looking slightly bored all the time he now cocks his head slightly to the side in a show of concern when he is talking to people.

Their YouTube channel will be more of the same kind of shameless self publicity.

I wonder why the palace is not doing the same publicity drive with Chareles since he is meant to be the next king.

This is exactly what I said on another thread. They really need to be selling Charles to us as he is next in line. But I suppose a video of him pottering in his garden at Highgrove is not as interesting as W&K.

And he's done it before.

Here is one he's just done at Highgrove

The Express called him Dumbledore. Poor old Charles, very eclipsed by his son and wife.

Because they are putting them in direct competition with Harry and Meghan. I think they have sensed a generational divide in those who are fans of the monarchy and those who are not.

Will and Kate have more chance of appealing to the younger generation. The younger generation, overall seem very supportive of Harry breaking tradition, leaving the family and starting a life of his own with Meghan. The royal family are trying to position Will and Kate in a similar tone- modern, down to earth people. But it's not working in my opinion as it's so painfully forced.

Roussette · 08/05/2021 08:16

HumanaHey I agree because this sort of thing is so unusual. It's a tad desperate to me. And really... will the younger generation watch their youtube channel, or indeed care?

artquejtion · 08/05/2021 08:21

They had to do something.

They were the stiffest young couple ever, so far removed from their own generation. The formality they were presenting until recently, was from another era.

AnnaMagnani · 08/05/2021 08:24

Shame because I'd watch this. Another video of them wafting about looking perfect and telling us to be aware of mental health I could live without.

Roussette · 08/05/2021 08:37

Yes. I just can't believe they are a similar age to my nieces, nephews, kids etc. They seem like a whole other generation and so removed from reality. How on earth they are going to make the monarchy palatable to younger generations, I do not know. Because it's not like Anne and her workmanlike dedication will impress anyone but the commemorative tea towel collecting generation.

It's a massive public relations exercise.. to win the approval of the fickle masses.

AnnaMagnani · 08/05/2021 09:00

Are they really going to appeal to the younger generation? William is nearly 40, Kate not far behind and has her uniform of coat dresses.

The video on the channel is full on cringe, and Kate sounds posher than the Queen in the 1 second they are allowed to speak for themselves.
