Who ever said it was impersonal had no clear understanding of the funeral.
It was very personal to him. He chose/designed the land rover hearse; his carriage and horses in the courtyard; his cap and sword.
All the music and readings were chosen by him and included a Russian Kontakion ( yes, I had to look that up), which reflected his Orthodox heritage.
All the various military roles were personal to him.
His Standard over the coffin included his Danish and Greek heritage and more.

A perfect send off.

My heart goes out to the Queen Sad

She looked stunning, I read about the pearls just today, the history of the jewellery they all wear is amazing.

@CokeDrinker

I thought it was a very, very cold service. No speeches, nothing. Just some singing of hymns. Very cold. Hardly respectful of him IMO. I know, people will come on here and say it's 'traditional' etc but it was extraordinarily cold and impersonal. Quite horrid. It was like he didn't exist as a person. I cannot imagine a funeral more ghastly or cold. One would be forgiven for thinking it was a funeral for a once living human being.
Just goes to show how differently the same thing can be viewed by different people. I thought it was a beautiful understated service which is exactly what Prince Phillip would have wanted and apparently my dm , a very unsentimental woman( but who has known a lot of sorrow in her life including losing my db in his teens ) had already used one hankie up in crying before they even got to the Chapel. At a loss to see how anyone could consider that a ‘cold service’ but each to their own
greenfiish · 17/04/2021 21:41

I think the flowers said 'Your Loving Lilibet'.
Beautiful service, very emotional.

DoubleTweenQueen · 17/04/2021 21:44

@dementedma He really was! And him retreating, with the acoustic effect that produced, was just stunning. If anyone had been able to hold it together until then, that must have finished them off, surely.

UsedToBeSeventeen · 17/04/2021 21:46

I’ve been re-listening to the music (I like classical music) and I love that outlets like the Metro are covering his music choices. I had no idea he was into music, I would have loved to hear his Desert Island Discs.

Did you think it was cold, then?! 😂

Think you're the only one...

It was all planned by the Duke.

LeibnizQueen · 17/04/2021 21:46

BBC news is covered in pics of queen during service looking so alone and sad.

I can't look at them as it's so sad for her.

I'm no royalist but these pics seems poor taste and push my emotional buttons

lollipoprainbow · 17/04/2021 21:48

I'm watching on catch up just to listen to I vow to thee my country as it's so beautiful even though it makes my cry!!

lollipoprainbow · 17/04/2021 21:48

Yes I didn't think the flowers looked as fresh as should have done tbh.

Vallmo47 · 17/04/2021 21:51

Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

I hope he rests in peace and love.

coodawoodashooda · 17/04/2021 21:51

But who was the piper? I think he might live close by.

UserEleventyNine · 17/04/2021 21:52

Perhaps they'd been lying on the coffin while it was resting in the private chapel.

Iquitit · 17/04/2021 21:53

I thought it was beautiful, and as we know he planned many aspects of it, what he wanted it to be. The Landrover and the horses and groom's in the courtyard were lovely touches that expressed his personality I think.
The music was lovely and the armed forces did him proud, the Queen was so......... I don't really know how to describe it, a 94 year old widowed after 73 years, sitting alone at her husbands funeral would have you thinking vulnerable, but, somehow she wasn't, brave or stoic doesn't seem to cover it. So very dignified.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/04/2021 21:56

Some of the flowers were white sweet peas. Which is why they probably look droopy. I thought they were roses.

Where one finds sweet peas in April is anyone’s guess.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/04/2021 22:00

It was perfect. I'm not a Royalist particularly but I blubbed. We learned more about Prince Philip in the last week or so than we did in the last 73 years, because he never talked about himself.

We will not see his like again.

Snaffodrop · 17/04/2021 22:01

What a wonderful send off it was. So lovely knowing that it was all done to Prince Phillip’s plan.

I watched this with my father who, in the 1950’s, did his National Service in the Scots Guards as a musician. He enjoyed seeing inside the grounds where he had played in the band there on many occasions. He said that once, when they were tuning up (making a hell of a racket apparently!), Prince Phillip turned up and commented “Sounds better than usual”.

LIZS · 17/04/2021 22:02

@coodawoodashooda

But who was the piper? I think he might live close by.
I thought the bio of the piper had suggested he was in the forces but came from a village near Balmoral.
derxa · 17/04/2021 22:02

CokeDrinker would start a row in an empty hoose.

JanFebAnyMonth · 17/04/2021 22:09

The flowers were lovely. Hearing that the queen designed the wreath and seeing the sweet peas made me wonder whether he had been her “Sweet P”....

Oldowl · 17/04/2021 22:11

I thought the funeral was a spectacle for someone who did not want a fuss! Us Brits do pomp and ceremony well. I bet there were lots of proud parents with their DS/DD on parade today. The pall bearers did an amazing job.

I was really choked up when the band played 'Nimrod'. (My dad had it at his funeral.) They then panned over to the household staff who had lined up to pay their respects. All I could think of was Downton Abbey and how the household staff revere the family and are so much part of their lives. I was a mess.

Anyone know who the female singer was?

Slub · 17/04/2021 22:11

Exquisite service for a man who led an extraordinary life married to Our Queen.
Very fitting.
Dignified.
Beautiful.
