Meghan and Harry's new home in Santa Barbara

Well I've seen the news articles and their new home looks absolutely beautiful and a dream SB pad with the ivy clad walls, pool, tennis court etc. SB has gorgeous homes although very expensive and pretty unaffordable for the humble hoi pilloi. I think Meg has played a blinder. I truly hope their marriage lasts but if not she is in possession of some prime real estate and a neighbor of Oprah. It's also where so many politicians come through fundraising at private events, so if she is politically ambitious she is well situated.

However with 9 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms 😄 I really think they CANNOT lecture the world on cutting back and making do to save the environment in anyway!

I am sure DM readers will explode with jealousy and a collective gnashing of teeth. But they wanted her gone, and she has, to a beautiful ocean facing estate with year round sunshine. Good on yer Megs! Grin

I think PA is potentially an ongoing court case and that nothing has been proven in the court of law yet. There is a lot of sensitivity around ongoing court cases. It does look suspicious, he came across badly in the interview and he should cooperate with the authorities.

However, it is a lot of “he says” they say” about the cooperation. His lawyers claim he has tried. There is also very convenient that he is the almost only one accused publicly when it is in the middle of the US elections and both Trump and Clinton have been (I think) on Epstein’s private jet.

My understanding is also that the girl in question was 17, so any consensual liaison would be legal her, but not (I think) in the US.

Personally, I want the court to dig into every last detail of this and I want all guilty creeps charged and punished to the full extent of the law. These girls were appallingly treated.

I will personally avoid name calling until I know more though Smile.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 20/08/2020 13:35

And for the record, I think all forms of sexual assault or the purchase of sexual favours is appalling.

I support the Swedish system, it is legal to sell sex (helps the girls to get help and medical treatment), but it is illegal to buy sex. Anyone buying sex in Sweden face a criminal record and anywhere between a fine and jail up to 4 years depending on circumstances. You would also get punished for trying to buy sex, even if you are rejected. Serves them right. Creeps!

Is there still an age limit if proven to be trafficked?

MissEliza · 20/08/2020 14:49

@Jillyhilly that's not been my experience. During the period when there were a lot of terror attacks in Europe, there were a lot of threads with posters saying anti-Muslim comments. My dh is Muslim and I'm used to a lot of things but I was really feeling ground down and offended by the relentlessness of the Islamaphobia on MN at that time. Not one comment I reported was deleted. I've reported less offensive comments on Facebook and they've been quickly removed.

MissEliza · 20/08/2020 14:50

It's only because I like chatting with you lovely people that I keep coming on to MN but I don't have much respect for it.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 20/08/2020 15:07

Sunbathing, I am not familiar with the details of English (and Welsh) criminal law, but I think there may be a requirement that the perpetrator knew that she was trafficked. And that this can be shown without reasonable doubt maybe?

As the age of consent if different in the US, I think any liaison there could be criminal. But I am unsure if this would require the perpetrator to know her age at the time. I am pretty sure he would be able to say “I knew she was 17, but I didn’t realise that wasn’t ok”.

Maybe someone with a more detailed knowledge will come along.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 20/08/2020 15:13
  • sorry, would not be able to say that he knew the age, but not that it was illegal.

I think that knowing a girls age would put someone on the hook. Maybe he would be done regardless, depends on how the US law is written.

Often, under criminal law, there are certain requirements on intent which do not exist under civil law.

This week’s Spectator magazine has an article on what are described as the “colossal” running costs of the couple’s new house, estimated at $100,000 per month. The piece speculates that these costs explain why the house took so long to sell.

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 20/08/2020 19:29

Fuck’s sake.

Dear God...that's piling the pressure on.
Muser314 · 22/08/2020 09:58

@sunglassesonthetable

Well... I don't want to pay £300,000 p.a. for Andrew to have 3 full time security officers 24 hours a day, despite him having to give up royal duties for far more dodgy reasons, but there you go.

Couldn't agree more.

I agree with this. He should if he has any self-awareness whatsoever be living a very, very quiet and private life from now on. He shouldn't be out socialising and travelling in a way that would give not one but two security guards full time employment. That is ridiculous. Hand him over to the FBI. I hope that Charles does that when he's king.
Muser314 · 22/08/2020 10:00

oh, in fact 3 security officers! Wow. What is he doing.

ajandjjmum · 22/08/2020 10:27

Three eight hour shifts for 24 hour coverage presumably.

Viviennemary · 22/08/2020 13:36

So is the 100k dollars including the cost of the staff and security. How very magnanimous of the pair to give out free nappies. I think I'd rather buy my own thanks. Have they got any self awareness whatsoever.

I think we know the answer to that!
Muser314 · 22/08/2020 16:14

Are those fires anywhere near where they live?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/08/2020 16:26

Muser314 this is a link to one of the worst fires in the immediate area, in 2018/19: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Fire

Then there was the Cave Fire 8 months ago: www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/wildfire-near-santa-barbara-threatens-thousands-homes-rages-out-control-n1091691

And already there's an air quality warning in Santa Barbara county over this latest one: www.noozhawk.com/article/california_wildfires_affecting_air_quality_in_santa_barbara_county

bluebell34567 · 22/08/2020 22:54

vooow, Russian must be very happy he sold the house away.

bluebell34567 · 22/08/2020 22:55

there may be another house move in the cards.

To be fair, they were doing it for a charity org which raised the public awareness of the org and hopefully some donations. And so what if their costs are too high or they live a luxurious life? Are we saying all rich and/or privileged people should not help the needy? So the same can be said for all royals, celebrities, Bill and Melinda Gates etc. Cancel philanthropy?
ajandjjmum · 23/08/2020 17:12

Baby2Baby is apparently an incredibly successful charity, that is supported by many LA celebrities. Not sure who needed the exposure more - M & H or the charity - presumably M & H as they took along their own photographer.

Pity really - I'm sure there are lower profile charities closer to Santa Barbara who could really use their support.

Words · 23/08/2020 17:17

If it's already incredibly successful I doubt it needed any more...light shining on it.

Viviennemary · 23/08/2020 18:41

Their public image is now so bad it will take a miracle to recover from it. Still Caimilla did. But I expect she listened to advice.

sunglassesonthetable · 23/08/2020 23:50

Sorry but I don't think their public image is "so bad".

I don't think you should take it for granted that everyone thinks like that.
