Starting this thread while I digest the last few posts on the previous thread. I think the H&M saga could be as unsettling for the RF as the Charles & Diana bad publicity in the 1990s, if not worse.

With these video calls and dropping in at random charities they seem to be trying to replicate a "royal workload". If that's the life they want why not stay as part of the institution and do it properly with the support of the Queen and a decent PR team behind them?

If they don't want that life then just get normal jobs which is what plenty of royals do; Beatrice, Eugenie, Duchess of Kent, Zara etc. This "Royal Lite" approach is so tedious. They can't offer the weight and kudos of the Crown and they don't have any direct experience or knowledge to offer either. If they'd set up home in a quietish location (UK/Canada/US), got regular jobs and turned up occasionally at relevant royal family events they'd probably be left alone and people would have more respect for them. Do they think doing a normal days work is beneath them so they have to keep pretending they're working royals?

thisenglishlife · 06/07/2020 17:11

One royal family's problems is that the staff aren't particularly diverse. I know that Harry had Heather Wong (who has now been transferred to Travelyst).

There was a recent book about Kensington Palace (I think the Quinn book) and it had this quote:
(Meghan) worried that people would look down on her or treat her differently because she was a divorced, mixed-race American. ‘There are the more reactionary elements [courtiers] in the Royal Family who do look down on her...’ added a Kensington insider.

LaMarschallin

Grin I think he does it to just fit in a bit. We spend a lot of time over there in different parts of the country, and I suppose if you're somewhat of a linguist, you might do that, dunno! Not being one, I have no idea, but he finds the different accents abroad interesting. Aye up me duck!
thisenglishlife · 06/07/2020 17:19

We don't know what they're doing day to day, but it's not exactly life as normal for most people. Meghan is supposed to be one of producers for the upcoming film adaptation of the novel 'Election Year'.

More revelations of Meghan's tantrums and self-importance

Cauliflowerpowerpop · 06/07/2020 17:22

Gawd, Harry standing there like an absolute lemon! It looked like an episode of The Windsors.
Apart from that it was the usual bingo - “the world craves healing, process, transformation, energy, growth”. It would have been lovely to hear a bit more of the others.
Meghan is looking very fresh and well.

Cartesiandebt · 06/07/2020 17:24

People look down on Meghan because of her behaviour, not her race.

lakeswimmer · 06/07/2020 17:25

Meghan can work as a film producer without the random appearances at charities. Its' the impression they give of still trying to carry out royal engagements that's odd.

Roussette · 06/07/2020 17:31

Why can't she appear at charities. The two she supports that have made the news over here (SmartWorks and the Hubb Community Kitchen) have really valued her input and help.

If it's of help to a charity there's nothing wrong with it IMO.

thisenglishlife · 06/07/2020 17:33

The article linked by a PP states the Duchess had asked the staff member to do something, but they told her: "I'm really sorry I can't do that because I work for Kate". and Tom claimed Meghan went on to row with the member of staff with no further details.

Tom Quinn also had this backhanded compliment about Kate in his KP book she hasn’t let life in her extremely grand apartment at Kensington go to her head — or at least not too much,’ said a palace insider. ‘She is nice to her staff, in the main.'

Do we believe these' insider' comments?

SunbathingDragon · 06/07/2020 17:38

With these video calls and dropping in at random charities they seem to be trying to replicate a "royal workload". If that's the life they want why not stay as part of the institution and do it properly with the support of the Queen and a decent PR team behind them?

Perhaps this is what they wanted to do when they initially said they were stepping down, because I believe they said or insinuated they wanted to do some work on behalf of the Queen before it was discussed and agreed that they would no longer represent her. Maybe they have just decided to continue with what they had planned to do but without doing all the other things they opted out of, they aren’t able to stay in the institution.

I am sure this comment of mine will be shot down but what’s the point in them having the Palace’s decent PR Team behind them when they have consistently demonstrated that they don’t take on board advice that they must be given - just comments from the legal team about the case against the MoS show that they are not following the advice given (assuming they are listening to it in the first place).

FannyCann · 06/07/2020 17:41

I don't even adopt my accent to the local area when I'm speaking English.

I think unconscious "mirroring" is quite common and you don't need to be a linguist to do it. Like ending sentences with an upward inflection as if it was a question in the way Australians do? I'm doing it now as I type? It just sort of happens.

Also, as a child I couldn't say my 'R's and 'TH's. I'm still liable to mix up the 'R' sounds and the 'W' sounds in a sentence with a mix, like saying "white wash the right way". My sisters used to howl with laughter getting me to say "Round the ragged rocks the ragged robin runs".
Anyway, if I'm in the company of a person who also can't say them correctly I am liable to lapse, which is always embarrassing as I think they must think I'm slyly making fun of them. Lucky I'm not friends with Jonathon Ross. Grin

Viviennemary · 06/07/2020 17:45

It is odd turning up at charities and being photographed simply because they are royal. But they're not supposed to be doing royal duties. Or that's what we've been led to believe.

OVienna · 06/07/2020 17:47

That Meghan and Harry video. I think she's intelligent. There are lots of things she could do effectively. She tried to find a "platform" in the royal family. While that might not be the whole video she comes across as "Me me me" in it. I think it seems like she's using them/Harry.

There was one point when Harry said: "Sorry Mike I think you were going to jump in there" or some such and stopped talking. Meghan jumped right in and carried on speaking. Harry just looked at her.

It's very grandiose - I bet you she does go in for politics.

My feeling is the culture chase is going to emerge strongly as these activities unfold

lakeswimmer · 06/07/2020 17:49

Meghan started doing stuff with SmartWorks and the Hubb when she was a working royal. They give the impression of trying to continue being working royals when they've stepped down. I don't blame them for that - it's clearly not for everyone.

The reality is that millions of people support charities and volunteer without any need for it to be made public.

lakeswimmer · 06/07/2020 17:53

Sorry I should clarify what I mean - I don't blame them for stepping back from being working royals. The pretending to be working royals is the odd thing!

flapjackfairy · 06/07/2020 17:54

It is a bit rich ( understatement of the year)to be lecturing people on equality when living in a huge mansion yourself! And that most likely a freebie ! And taking money from Charles whilst basically sticking their fingers up to everything Harry has come from and formerly held dear. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.
They would be better living a modest lifestyle and putting their money where their mouth is ! They could fund a fair few causes with their millions .
Frankly I don't know how they can keep a straight face when saying this stuff ! They want to play the great philanthropist super couple but withour actually making any sacrifices .

fatgirlslimmer · 06/07/2020 18:14

Was that video edited as I could only hear MM & PH and at the end when he apologised for interrupting MM kept on talking?

Myimaginarycathadfleas · 06/07/2020 18:24

They want to play the great philanthropist super couple but without actually making any sacrifices

Exactly this. They could move into a perfectly nice but much less showbizzy location. They could manage without staff and a nanny. They are surely capable of looking after one child between them, after all neither of them has a job.

MangoFeverDream · 06/07/2020 18:31

They should have just moved to Africa like PH wanted to in the first place. Then they’d actually have something worthwhile to share ... maybe. Sitting around in Hollywood ... where’s the USP?

Jillyhilly · 06/07/2020 18:38

That video Shock. It really is nauseating to listen to this incredibly privileged couple who are benefitting so enormously from the very system that they now seem to be criticising.

She is very very articulate, I'll give her that. She is one of these people who just keeps talking and talking and talking while everyone else is stunned into nodding silence by her presence and her determination to keep talking. And she has a very pleasing voice that is nice to listen to. But it all just amounts to so many platitudes. "Pain is painful...a high tide raises all ships...equality puts us all on equal footing...the world is craving a healing process...fighting the right fight...right side of history". And then Harry, the big expert on equality, piping up with his learned script about institutional racism whenever she takes a breath.

I've already seen one parody video of this latest offering and I'm sure there'll be a lot more.
@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels you do realise that Zara Tindall is an Olympic equestrian? Which may contribute her sponsorship with Rolex

Steve Guerdat is also sponsored by Rolex and last time I checked he is not related to HMQ
Well I never realised that Nishky, as an avid royal watcher that snippet of Zara Tindall’s life had completely passed me by, thanks for bringing me up to speed........ Hmm I wonder why then Charlotte Dujardin Britain’s most successful equestrian who has won two individual gold medals, one team gold medal and 2 silver team medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics compared to Zara’s one silver team medal in 2012 did not get the Rolex gig and Zara did? it’s a head scratcher that’s for sure.

Nishky · 06/07/2020 19:05

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels perhaps because is less high profile than eventing?

Rolex sponsor a large number of sports stars. Being related to the Queen is not a common denominator 🙄

Nishky · 06/07/2020 19:06

Sorry, meant to say DRESSAGE is less high profile
