Royals and American media coverage

ButteryPuffin · 04/04/2020 23:50

Saw this cover posted on Twitter and noted that it seems the tabloids do indeed exist in the US (amazing, huh?). This is pretty much what you'd expect from the source, and I think it's pretty deplorable, but I am interested to see how the American media in general cover the presence of the former royals who've now arrived to make their home there. Of course we can discuss their coverage of other Royals too and related topics. All welcome.

Link to cover story - please note I'm not endorsing it, I'm just sharing it:

Fleas , I don’t think anyone here does. I have been genuinely baffled by accusations of getting all my news from social media (I am not on any social media, so Instagram allows my less than a handful looks before I am told to log on and I cannot access comments).

I think there is a genuine problem with people getting all information from social media - or indeed tabloids. The problem is that when you have an opinion similar to anything pushed by tabloids or social media, you get accused of no factual basis. The assumption is that you do not read the papers or are aware of any historical or factual context. This is frightening and sad.

HarryDaylight · 05/04/2020 18:21

I thought it was just me, fleas, but I don't recognise a lot of the names/tabloids, which is surprising as I had (wrongly obvs) assumed these threads were mostly read by UK residents.
Tabloid culture has always meant "sell yer arse for dosh" to me but of course I may be mistaken.

BelleharePenguin09 · 05/04/2020 18:38

SenecaFallsRedux

I think some of you are confusing "celebrity culture," which there definitely is in the US, with tabloid culture.

Oh god, how utterly patronising. The posters whom you are attempting to belittle are not the type to be “confused”.

Tabloid muck is tabloid muck.

BelleharePenguin09 · 05/04/2020 18:41

As for good old social media, may I just clarify here and now, I do not use it as my source of news. Does anyone who is functioning at a reasonably high level?

Myimaginarypenguinhasfleas · 05/04/2020 18:42

I have to admit I bristle somewhat at the notion that anyone who is not an admirer of MM must have formed their views solely from tabloid sources. I wouldn't be so arrogant as to assume her fans did the same thing.

No doubt in common with many other posters, I have a decent education, a fair amount of life and professional experience and more or less fully functioning eyes and ears. I can do my own thinking.

ButteryPuffin · 05/04/2020 18:42

Could you explain that earlier post @SenecaFallsRedux about the 'reaching' argument? I have asked, but you've moved on to make other more general statements without clarifying. I would genuinely be interested to discuss the reputation, workings and agenda of specific publications further. That's what the thread is for.

What IS tabloid culture, in any case? I use the BBC, The Guardian and The Scotsman. None us a dreaded tabloid...

BelleharePenguin09 · 05/04/2020 18:44

None is

HarryDaylight · 05/04/2020 18:47

It's all down to money at the end of the day, nothing else. Everybody takes their whack. It doesn't matter what you dress it up as, celebrity culture or tabloid culture; it's all the same: selling shit to numpties.

BelleharePenguin09 · 05/04/2020 18:47

Quite. Perhaps those who are trying to second guess things, should stop and think. Thinking is good.

BelleharePenguin09 · 05/04/2020 18:49

selling shit to numpties.

Spot on.

Think it’s falls not hills, actually...Smile

HarryDaylight · 05/04/2020 19:09

So sorry for my error.

PenguinOrHippo · 05/04/2020 19:14

I think this is a general problem, both on MN and in real life. The amount of people with ill informed views is so large, that it can be a general assumption that more than a certain percentage gets their views from any kind of social media or gutter press. However, I find it incredibly bad form to automatically make that assumption in any intellectual discussion.

On any thread, including happy threads (and indeed critical threads), you will find some airhead posters who are regurgitating views they have heard somewhere, adding their own brainless tripe to it. However, assuming that this is the majority of posters is insulting and patronising.

DandyPenguin · 05/04/2020 19:24

I know that the anti-Meghan coterie on MN does try to push the notion that there is a tabloid culture in the US with influence similar to that in the UK, but push as they might, it is still not true.

I’ll let slide your comment about the apparent existence of such an coterie’.

But I’m not letting slide your assertion that posters like to claim there’s a tabloid culture with some influence in the US similar to that in the UK.

Can you show us where posters have said that? Because they haven’t on this thread.
Making a point in a generalised manner doesn’t make it true.

DandyPenguin · 05/04/2020 19:26

A coterie. Thanks to autocorrect and typing on my phone, my grammar did the sliding there. Blush

DandyPenguin · 05/04/2020 19:30

My post was to @SenecaFallsRedux to be clear.
